Objective: To observe the effect of Tripterygium wilfordii on Th1, Th2 cytokines in asthma patients for further study on the therapeutic mechanism. Methods: Twelve patients of middle or severe asthma were treated by Tripterygium polyglucoside 40 mg or 60 mg daily for 4 weeks. Blood of patients was collected before and after treatment for serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) preparation. The prepared PBMCs were stimulated in vitro with Concanavalin A (ConA) for 6 hrs and followed by culturing with Triptolide for 24 hrs and then the supernatant was collected. The concentration of interleukin-2(IL-2),-4(IL-4), -5(IL-5) and interferon-γ(IFN-γ) in serum and in the supernatant were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Serum levels of IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 of patients decreased significantly after treatment of Tripterygium polyglucoside (P<0.01), but IFN-γ level was under the detection sensitivity both before and after treatment. Triptolide could inhibit PBMC to secrete IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 in vitro (P<0.01), but IFN-γ was also under the detection sensitivity. Conclusion: The marked inhibition of Th2 cytokine expression by Tripterygium was the important mechanism of it in treating asthma. But the fact that Tripterygium also showed inhibition on Th1 cytokine indicated that the inhibition of Tripterygium on Th2 and Th1 cytokines was non-specific.

OBJECTIVETo study the relationship between morphological characteristics of growth cycle for Epimedium acuminatium and accumulation level of secondary metabolites.
METHODAfter making habitat clear, methods of morphology observation, specimen preparation, organism charting were applied to record morphological characteristics of E. acuminatium at different stages. HPLC was employed to detect icariin content of different parts of the plant at the stage of vegetative growth and sexual reproduction.
RESULTThe growth cycle of E. acuminatium was divided into vegetative growth stage and sexual and asexual reproduction coexistence stage. Seven to eight years were needed for the plants flowering and seeding of E. acuminatimcan in open land of forest edge, but within good nutrition conditions, growth cycle is shortened into three to four years. The difference of icariin content in two growth stages was not significant.
CONCLUSIONMorphological change of lower and foliar organ can be utilized to estimate growth age. But after applying sexual propagation for both root and stem of grown plants, it's been difficult to determine their growth year. If individual biomass or yield is economical, plants can be harvested in both vegetative growth and sexual reproduction stages.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of hydrogen gas inhalation on survival rate and serum high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) levels in severe septic mice.
METHODSSevere sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) operation in mice.A total of 248 mice were randomly divided into four groups: sham operation group (sham), sham operation with hydrogen gas inhalation group (sham+H2), severe CLP group (severe CLP) and severe CLP with hydrogen gas inhalation group (severe CLP+H2). Hydrogen gas inhalation was given for 1 h at 1st and 6th h after CLP or sham operation, respectively. The survival rates and serum HMGB1 levels of all groups at different time points were measured.
RESULTThe 7-d survival rates of severe CLP mice was 0 % (Compared with Sham group, P <0.05), and the serum HMBG1 levels from h2 to h32 after CLP operation were significantly increased in severe CLP mice (Compared with Sham group, P <0.05). Hydrogen gas treatment increased the 7-d survival rate of severe CLP mice to 60 % (Compared with severe sepsis group, P <0.05) and significantly reduced the serum HMGB1 levels at different time points (Compared with severe sepsis group, P <0.05).
CONCLUSIONHydrogen gas inhalation can decrease the serum HMGB1 levels and increase the survival rate of rats with severe sepsis.

OBJECTIVETo test the feasibility of correcting conjunctival sac narrowing following orbital implantation using polyester fiber heart patches instead of the skin autograft.
METHODSTwelve patients of conjunctival sac narrowing after orbital implantation (including 3 with orbital implant exposure) admitted in Nanfang Hospital between 2012 and 2016 received surgical correction of the conjunctival sac using polyester fiber heart patches. During the surgery, the central conjunctival sac was opened, the exposed area was covered with suitable polyester fiber heart patches, and the palpebral margin was sutured.
RESULTSThree months after the operation, 10 patients showed improved appearance after implantation of the prosthetic eye. Two patients received a second operation to remove the patches due to graft rejection and infections and skin autograft was implanted for reconstruction of the conjunctival sac.
CONCLUSIONPolyester fiber heart patches are ideal materials for repairing Conjunctival sac narrowing and orbital implant exposure, but this approach is not suitable in cases of severe narrowing or occlusion of the conjunctival sac.

Objective: To evaluate the change of tooth root volume and length after rapid maxillary expansion by CBCT three dimensional reconstruction method. Methods: 33 patients underwent rapid maxillary expansion were examined by CBCT before and after treatment. The CBCT images of the first, second premolars and the first molars were segmented and reconstructed by Mimics image processing software for the analysis of the changes of root volume and length. All data were analyzed by SPSS software statistically. Results: After maxillary expansion, all root volumes were reduced(P < 0. 05),more reduction was observed in anchorage teeth than in non-anchorage teeth(P < 0. 05). The length of most teeth roots was not decreased(P> 0. 05) except the buccal and distal roots of the first molars(P < 0. 05). Conclusion: Rapid maxillary expansion may result in root resorption and this resorption is mainly based on the volume decrease.
