3.The Prevalence of Epstein-Barr Virus in Uterine Cervical Cancer: Detection by PCR and In Situ PCR Methods.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine cervical cancer is the most common malignant tumor in Korean women. Human papillomaviruses are associated in 85-90% of the cases. However, other cofactors are considered to be important in carcinogenesis. There is an evidence that the uterine cervix is the site of shedding of the Epstein-Barr viruses(EBV). Furthermore the virus has been detected in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix. We studied to evaluate the role of EBV in cervical carcinogenesis. METHODS: Non-neoplastic cervices(12), carcinoma in situ(32), microinvasive squamous cell carcinomas(9), invasive squamous cell carcinomas(37) and adenocarcinomas and adenosquamous carcinomas(14) were studied for EBV infection. PCR and in situ PCR for EBNA-1 were done and subtyping was done using PCR for EBNA 3C. RESULTS: In non-neoplastic cervix, EBV was detected in 16.7% by PCR and found in normal epithelial cells and lymphocytes in in situ PCR. By PCR technique, EBV was detected in 65.6% of CIS, 66.3% and 51.4% of microinvasive and invasive squamous cell carcinomas, 57.1% of adenocarcinomas and adenosquamous carcinomas. EBV subtyping was done in EBV positive cases by PCR and all showed type 1. CONCLUSION: EBV was detected in higher frequency in cervical cancer than in non-neoplastic cervix. However the frequency was not correlated to the invasion depth and histologic types of cervical carcinomas. EBV was detected in tumor cells as well as normal epithelial cells and lymphocytes also. It was suggested that EBV may play a role in cervical cancers but the mechanism in carcinogenesis remains to be solved.

6.An Experiment to Test Effects of an Educational Program on Prevention of Smoking in Middle School Students.

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate effect of an educational program based upon experiment for smoking prevention in middle school students. METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants were 107 middle school students (53 in the experimental group, 54 in the control group). Students in the experimental group participated in three 45-minute educational programs over a period of 2 weeks. The dependent variables were measured before and 2 & 4 weeks after the treatment. The data were analyzed using 2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. SPSS was used to aid analysis. RESULTS: 1) The experimental group showed higher levels of knowledge of smoking prevention compared to the control group. However this program did not affect their attitude towards smoking. 2) There was a higher possibility of smoking in the future among the students who had smoked than those who had not. 3) The majority (84.9%) of the experimental group said that the program was effective. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of smoking for the experimental group was increased, so it is assumed that the program itself had a positive effect on the students. To change attitudes regarding smoking, smoking prevention programs need to be conducted repeatedly, not just temporarily.

8.Osteogenesis Imperfecta Tarda (Case Report Tow cases)

Two cases report on osteogenesis imperfecta tarda and review of literature has been made. The rare genetic disorder, osteogenesis imperfecta tarda is familiar to most orthopedic surgeons because of management of fracture and skeletal deformities, espicially bowing of long bone. Its clinical manifestations are known as bony fragility, blue sclera and deafness less frequently ligamentous laxity but its etiological factor is obscure; The basic defect is thought to involvement some abnormality of collagen. Recently the bony weakness caused by increased bony turnover rate. One case of osteogenesis imberrfecta tarda in 8 year old male was belonged to tarda type 1. (Falvo-classification), who could not walk due to marked anterolateral bowing of right tibia and the another to tarda type II. in 13 year old male with fresh fracture of right femoral shaft. The former was performed corrective multible osteotomy, realignment and intramedullary rod fixation for correction of bowing deformity of right tibia, and the later was managed the fracture of right femoral shaft with Russels traction and hip spica cast. The result of reported therapeutic mesure was good.
