OBJECTIVETo elucidate the role of S-100B and neuron specific enolase (NSE) in predicting the outcomes of patients with severe head injury.
METHODSForty patients with severe head injury were included in this study. The serum concentrations of S-100B and NSE were measured within 12 hours after head injury to investigate the correlation between serum levels of S-100B and NSE and outcome. Validity of both S-100B and NSE in outcome prediction was assessed with Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve.
RESULTSThe serum concentrations of S-100B and NSE of both groups, with favorable or unfavorable outcomes, were significantly higher than those of the normal group. The serum concentrations within 12 hours after head injury were closely correlated with the prognosis. Furthermore, according to the ROC curves of S-100B and NSE, S-100B was found better in predicting outcomes than NSE.
CONCLUSIONSS-100B and NSE may play important roles in outcome prediction after severe head injury. Moreover, S-100B is clearly superior to NSE in terms of predictive value and appears to be a more promising serum marker in outcome prediction after severe head injury.

In this study, immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to determine whether the expression of NF-kappaB in the hippocampus of prenatally stressed offspring rats is gender-dependent. The results were as follows: In the female offspring rats, the expressions of p65 in the hippocampal dentate gyrus in mid-term stress (MS) and late-term stress (LS) groups were significantly less than that in the control group (P<0.01). There was a significant difference between MS and LS groups (P<0.01). The expressions of p50 in all regions of hippocampus in MS and LS groups were significantly more than that in the control group (P<0.01). A significant difference was also present between MS and LS groups (P<0.01). In the male offspring rats, the expressions of p65 in the hippocampal dentate gyrus in MS and LS groups were evidently more than that in the control group (P<0.01). There was a significant difference between MS and LS groups (P<0.01). The expressions of p50 in all regions of hippocampus in MS and LS groups were significantly less than that in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). There was also a significant difference in p65 expression between MS and LS groups (P<0.01). In addition, in the control group the expressions of p65 in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of female offspring rats were significantly more than that of male ones (P<0.01). However, in LS group the expressions of p65 in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of female offspring rats were significantly less than that of male ones (P<0.01). Moreover, there was no significant difference in p65 expression between female and male offspring rats in MS group. In the control group the gender difference in the expression of p50 was only observed in hippocampal CA1 (P<0.01). The expressions of p50 in all regions of hippocampus of female offspring rats were significantly more than that of male ones in LS group (P<0.01). There was no significant difference in p50 expression between female and male offspring rats in MS group. The results of Western blot were similar to those of immunohistochemical study. These results indicate that prenatal stress in different gestational periods significantly affects the expressions of p65 and p50 in hippocampus, and this effect is gender-dependent. This may be one of the mechanisms underlying the gender difference in the ability of learning and memory of the prenatally stressed offspring rats.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the methods and efficacy of atrial septal defect (ASD) occlusion through right chest incision.
METHODSThe clinical data of 21 patients with ASD from July 2004 to May 2005 were analyzed retrospectively. Eight patients were male and 13 patients were female, aged from 1 to 70 years old, with the median age of 21 years old. The diameter of ASD was from 8 to 40 mm. All the 21 patients were under general anaesthesia. A 2 to 3 cm incision was made in the 4th intercostals of right side of sternum. With the help of transesophageal or normal transthoracic echocardiography, the occluder was released using monotube unit.
RESULTSAll cases were occluded successfully without death. The types of the occluder were from 14 to 46 mm. None failed and had to choose extracorporeal circulation operations. No transfusion and no serious complication such as the occluder dislocated occurred. And no evident of atrial shunt was found when in review echo.
CONCLUSIONSThe ASD occlusion through right chest minimal incision is safe, credit, minimal invasive and worth to use widely.

OBJECTIVETo search for characteristic chromosome changes in primary laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and Hep-2 cell line and to realize the relationship between the cytogenetic abnormality and the pathogenetic mechanism in LSCC.
METHODSThe fresh resulted samples of LSCC were analyzed with an improved primary cell culture for chromosome preparation and G-banding technique. Hep-2 cell line was analyzed by high resolution banding technique. Molecular cytogenetics analysis was made by chromosome 6 painting probe.
RESULTSFour primary LSCC succeeded in primary cell culture and obtained metaphases, one was tetraploid, the other three were triploid. The chromosome mode of Hep-2 cell line was from 68 to 75 and fifteen marker chromosomes were found. The most structural abnormalities of chromosome in primary LSCC and HEP-2 cell line were unbalance translocation, terminal deletion and isochromosome. The complicate aberration in chromosome 6 was common in LSCC and Hep-2.
CONCLUSION6q-, I(5p), 17p-, 5q- are considered as characteristic chomosome changs in LSCC. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) may enhance the ability of detecting complicated chromosome rearrangements and marker chromosomes, which could provide more value data to verify the chromosome characteristic aberration in LSCC.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect and safety of the implantation of a new type of testicular prosthesis in the treatment of testis loss.
METHODSWe recruited for this study 18 patients with testis loss treated by testicular prosthesis implantation, including 10 cases of prostate cancer, 3 cases of anorchia, 2 case of orchiatrophy, 2 cases of hermaphroditism and 1 case of cryptorchidism. The prosthesis was a hollow silicone elastomer YH-G1 made in China, selected according to the volume of the scrotum and the size of the contralateral testis.
RESULTSThirteen of the patients received testicular prosthesis implantation with orchiectomy, and the other 5 underwent the procedure 6 months later. The operation time of testicular prosthesis implantation was (22.6 +/- 4.6) min, ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. All the patients were discharged after 12 hours of postoperative observation, with a mean hospital stay of (1.3 +/- 0.4) days. A follow-up after 6 months revealed no complications in 17 cases. Rejection occurred in 1 case at 3 months after the implantation, ending in the removal of the prosthesis. Of the 17 successful cases, 15 were very satisfied with the size of the prosthesis, 14 with its weight, 12 with its comfortableness, and all with the appearance of the scrotum and the position of the prosthesis, while 5 found the implant too rigid.
CONCLUSIONThe implantation of the new home-made silicone elastomer testicular prosthesis YH-G1 was safe and effective for the treatment of testis loss, and could meet the esthetic and psychological requirements of the patient. But further observation is needed for its long-term complications and influence on the patient's quality of life.

BACKGROUNDCatheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been demonstrated to be effective in a subsets of patients with AF. However, very few data are available in regard to patients with prior history of stroke undergoing catheter ablation. This study aimed to investigate the outcome of catheter ablation in AF patients with prior ischemic stroke.
METHODSBetween January 2008 and December 2011, of 1897 consecutive patients who presented at Beijing An Zhen Hospital for treatment of drug-refractory AF, 172 (9.1%) patients in the study population had a history of ischemic stroke. All patients underwent catheter ablation and were followed up to assess maintenance of sinus rhythm and recurrence of symptomatic stroke.
RESULTSAmong these 1897 patients, 1768 (93.2%) who had complete follow-up information for a minimum of six months were included in the final analysis. Patients in the stroke group (group I) and the no-stroke group (group II) were similar in regards to gender, body mass index (BMI), history of diabetes, type of AF, and left atrial size. The patients in group I were older than those in group II, and had a higher incidence of hypertension, chronic heart failure, lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and higher CHADS2 scores. Six months after ablation, 107 (68.6%) patients in group I and 1403 (87.1%) in group II had discontinued warfarin treatment (P < 0.001). During a median follow-up of (633 ± 415) days, 65 patients in the group I and 638 in group II experienced AF recurrence, and five patients in group I and 28 in group II developed symptomatic stroke. The rates of AF recurrence and recurrent stroke were similar between group I and group II (41.7% vs. 39.6%, P = 0.611; 3.2% vs. 1.7%, P = 0.219; respectively).
CONCLUSIONCatheter ablation of AF in patients with prior stroke is feasible and efficient.

The study is aimed to explore the effect of combination use of nitrogen(N) and zinc(Zn) fertilizers on the growth, yield and the effective components of Agastache rugosa. A. rugosa was grown under two N application rate (120, 300 kg·hm⁻²) and five Zn levels (0, 20, 50, 100,150 kg·hm⁻²) under field condition. The effect of the treatments on the physiological indicators, distribution of nitrogen and zinc and volatile oil components of A. rugosa were studied. The results showed that the combination use of N and Zn could significantly affect the growth and development, yield and volatile oil components of A. rugosa. Under the test conditions, the highest yield of Agastaches Herba was obtained when 50 kg·hm⁻² of Zn fertilizer was applied with high N application rate of 300 kg·hm⁻². Under the same N application rate, the increase of Zn production was positively correlated with the amount of Zn application in a certain concentration range, but excessive Zn application led to the decrease of yield. With the increase of N application level, the content of Zn also significantly increased. The combination use of N and Zn increased the yield of Agastaches Herba. High level of N application was beneficial to the absorption and accumulation of N and Zn of A. rugosa. Zn fertilizer could also promote the absorption and accumulation of N of A. rugosa. The interaction between N and Zn had significant influence on the main chemical constituents of the volatile oil of A. rugosa. Among the volatile oil chemical constituents of A. rugosa the content of pulegone (34.56%-53.91%) and piperonyl methyl ether (18.86%-42.27%) were much higher. Under the same N application rate, different Zn application rates also had significant effects on the main chemical components of volatile oil.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2016;24(2):546-550
OBJECTIVETo explore the clinical diagnostic value and significance of hepciden level by detecting the expression of serum hepcidin before and after treatment of infant iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with or without vitamin D deficiency.
METHODSA total of 60 cases of infamt IDA were divided into A and B groups, the group A consisted of 20 IDA infants with vitamin D deficiency, group B consisted of 48 IDA infants without vitamin D deficiency and the control group included 26 healthy infants. Blood examination including HGB, MCV, MCH and MCHC was performed by hematological analyzer, the level of serum ferritin was assayed by chemiluminescence immunoassay, the levels of hepcidin and 25- (OH) D were assayed by ELISA.
RESULTSThe levels of serum hepcidin in group A, B and control group before treatment were (29.16 ± 7.50), (27.11 ± 7.10) and (29.25 ± 8.39) ng/ml, respectively (P > 0.05). The level of serum hepcidin in group A and B after treatments was significantly higher than that in control group [ (36.21 ± 5.68) ng/ml vs (29.25 ± 8.39) ng/ml, P < 0.01; (34.16 ± 4.54) ng/ml vs (29.25 ± 8.39) ng/ml, P < 0.01]; but there were no significantly difference between group A and B (P > 0.05). The serum ferritin positively correlated with hepcidin in group B both before and after treatments (r = 0.352 and 0.367, P < 0.05, P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe level of serum hepcidin has an important significance in poccess of evaluatng for therapeutic effect in infant iron deficiency anemia, but the interference effect of vitamin D deficience should be eliminated when the expression level of hepcidin is applicated for diagnosis and differential diagnosis.
