PURPOSE: To describe the MR findings of simple bone cyst. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the signal intensity of the cystic contents, their margins, and internal septae, and the presence of bony fragment and pathologic fracture, and enhancement patterns in MRI of 10 pathologically confirmed simple bone cysts. RESULTS: On MR imaging, the cystic contents were of homogeneously low signal intensity on T1WI and high signal intensity on T2WI in nine cases and fluid-fluid level was seen in one case. The cystic margins were dark in all sequences. There were not any fragment in the cysts. Among the four cases with pathologic fracture, one case had fluid-fluid level and two had some areas of enhancement in the cyst or adjacent soft tissue. All nine cases with gadolinium enhancement showed thin rim enhancement along the inner margin of the cysts and internal septae. CONCLUSION: Homogeneous fluid-like signal intensity of cystic content and thin rim enhancement of margin and internal septae in MR imaging are believed to be helpful in the diagnosis of simple bone cyst.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a short message service intervention on adherence to maximal barrier precautions (MBP) and catheter-related blood stream infections. METHOD: The data were collected from March to September, 2008, at an 826-bed university-affiliated hospital in Daejeon. The study participants were 24 physicians who were inserting central catheters and 133 patients (control group 78 and intervention group 55) with central catheter insertions. The researcher sent the message (adherence to MBP and optimal recommendations) to each internal medicine doctor using the short message service (SMS) for cellular phones. Messages were sent monthly for 3 months. Data were analyzed by chi-square test and t-test using SPSS 12.0 windows program. RESULT: Adherence to maximal barrier precautions was significantly increased from 44.9% to 69.1% (p=.006) after the SMS intervention. But changes in the rate of CRBSI (catheter related blood stream infection) between the intervention group (1.89) and the control group (4.45) were not significant (p=.323). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the SMS intervention is effective in increasing the adherence to maximal barrier precautions and the SMS intervention can be recommended for utilization in infection control nursing practice.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of total hip arthroplasty using a proximal modular femoral stem in patients who had secondary coxarthrosis associated with a deformed femur. Materials and Methods: Forty-two patients (45 hips) with secondary coxarthrosis were evaluated after primary total hip arthroplasty using an S-ROM proximal modular femoral stem, between January 2001 and March 2004. The average follow-up was 44 months (range, 24 to 60 months). The mean age of the patients was 48.5 years old and there was a predominance of female patients (65.5%). The preoperative diagnoses included 26 cases of developmental dysplasia of the hip, 13 cases of sequalae of LCP, 2 cases of epiphyseal dysplasia, 3 cases of sequalae of pyogenic arthritis, and 1 case of congenital coxa vara. Results: The average Harris hip score improved from 52.2 points to 85.5 points. All the femoral stems demosntrated stable fixation, which included 37 cases by bony ingrowth and 8 cases by stable fibrous ingrowth. Neither osteolysis nor progressive radiolucent lines around the femoral stems were found at the latest follow-up. Postoperative complications included: 2 cases of hip dislocations, 1 case of periprosthetic fracture, 1 case of infected cup loosening, and 1 case of sciatic nerve palsy. Overall, forty-one hips (91.9%) exhibited excellent or good clinical results at the most recent follow-up. Conclusion: For advanced secondary coxarthrosis, total hip arthroplasty with use of a proximal modular femoral stem yielded good mid-term results based on clinical and radiological criteria.

Congenital dislocation of the hip has been known as one of the most common congenital anomalies in the orthopedic field since the time of Hippocrates (460-357 B.C.). The occurence of C.D.H. in twin babies is extremely rare thus few if any papers have been reported. During the period of January 1971 through June 1976 the authors have treated a total of 49 cases as inpatients. Two of these were twin babies. In both cases the hip was surgically reduced and followed by open reduction and femoral derotation osteotomy. Clinically and radiologically the results were good during the duration of follow-up seven months after operations.
