OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application of tissue engineering for treating tendon injury.METHODS: A computer-based online search was conducted in Medline and China Academic Journals Database with the key words of "Biological material, Sinew mechanism heals" in both English and Chinese from 1974 to 2009. Relevant books were hand-retrieved.RESULTS: Scholars at home and abroad tried to investigate how to regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and matrix synthesis by endogenous and exogenous growth factors so as to promote tendon repairing, relieve tendon adhesion, and decrease attenuation of biomechanical intensity. Tendon detect was mainly treated by autologous tendon transplantation, allogeneic tendon transplantation, artificial tendon transplantation, and tissue-engineered tendon transplantation. All those methods had both advantages and disadvantages. However, artificial biomaterial tendon has attracted much attention and it has been used for clinical application. Of course, there are still more problems to be solved, for example, source of tissue-engineered seed cells, immunological reaction of allogeneic tendon cells, specific mechanical intension, preparation and selection of degradable scaffold materials, correlation between cell and scaffold materials, and correlation between cell-material compound and peripheral tissues. With the development of tendon repairing and healing, single drug which was used to prevent tendon adhesion has developed into drug-barrier compound. Additionally, with the development of Chinese herb and molecular biological products, they not only inhibited exogenous healing, but also promote endogenous healing. Meanwhile, simple surgery has also developed into combined therapy.CONCLUSION: Although biomaterials for tendon repairing have achieved breakthrough in some respects, the results need also to be further studied.

Objective To explore the spatio-temporal regularity of cerebral edema in the early stage of severe burn (50% TBSA Grade Ⅲ) with four-dimensional (4D) mathematic model. Methods Twenty-six dogs were randomly divided into control group and 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours post-burn groups. The dogs in the postburn groups suffered severe burn of 50% TBSA GradeⅢ. Six hours after burn, 50 g/L glucose was injected according to Parkland formula. MRI manifestation, histopathological changes, brain water content and intracranial pressure were observed in each group. A 4D mathematic model was established based on the results of MRI scanning. Results Two turning points ( 6 and 18 hours postburn) and three phases of pathologic changes were displayed by 4D mathematic model of cerebral edema in the early stage of severe burn. The first phase (6 hours postburn) was in the subclinical period, when an effective treatment should be taken as quickly as possible so as to prevent deterioration of postburn cerebral edema. The second phase ( 6-18 hours postburn) was in the apostatic period with pathologic characteristic of vasogenic and cytotoxic brain edema. The third stage (18-24 hours postburn) was the critical period of cerebral edema. Intracerebral pressure (ICP) increased rapidly due to limitation of cranial cavity, when cerebral hernia easily happened. Conclusions The 4D model indicates that there is a feature of type S curve in the pathologic process of cerebral edema in the early stage after severe burn.

BACKGROUND: Proteins containing fibronectin domains play an important role in cell migration, adhesion, growth and differentiation and have been widely applied to a variety of new biological materials. Subcellular localization prediction of proteins containing fibronectin domains can promote protein function research and development of new biomaterials.OBJECTIVE: To realize subcellular localization prediction of proteins containing fibronectin domains. METHODS: A total of 80 human proteins were randomly selected from Uniprot database. The amino acid pairs for each protein were collocated to form 400 dimensional input feature vectors. The feature vectors were then trained and tested using support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor separately. The prediction quality was examined by the jackknife test. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The prediction accuracy was 92.5% and 95% for support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor methods respectively. This suggests that support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor methods are of important significance for predicting subcellular localization of proteins containing fibronectin domains and contribute to functional research of such proteins and surface modification of new biomaterials.

AIM: To study the activation effects of maize pollen polysaccharides(PPM) on human thoracic cavity macrophage (hTM). METHODS: Activities of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and acid phosphatase (ACP) in the hTM were detected by automatic biochemical analyzer, and the level of tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-?) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in the hTM was analyzed by radioimmunoassay, after hTM were cultured with 0.312,0.625, 1.250, 2.500, 5.000 mg/mL PPM-RPMI 1640 for 24 and 48 hours in vitro. RESULTS: The activities of LDH and ACP increased in the hTM induced by PPM, and the levels of TNF-? and IL-6 in the hTM induced by PPM increased markedly too. And the induced expression effect of TNF-? and IL-6 is associated with the concentration of PPM, and time for PPM inducing. CONCLUSION: PPM can induce cytokines secretion in hTM,and activate hTM in vitro.

Objective To analyze the epidemic characteristics and causes of post-exposure immunization failure of rabies in Hubei Province from 2015 to 2021, and to provide evidence for the prevention and control of rabies in Hubei Province. Methods The investigation data of rabies cases in Hubei Province from 2015 to 2021 were collected, and descriptive epidemiological methods were used for data analysis. Results A total of 127 cases of rabies were reported in Hubei Province from 2015 to 2021, with an average annual incidence of 0.31/million, showing a downward trend. The male to female ratio was 1.70:1. Farmers accounted for 82.67% of the total cases, and the 50-79 years old group accounted for 75.59%. The incidence was mainly concentrated in Xiangyang, Shiyan, Yichang and Jingmen, accounting for 77.17%. Most of the cases were concentrated in summer and autumn. Exposure of grade Ⅱand Ⅲ accounted for 24.79% and 75.21%, respectively. Hands, lower limbs below knee, head, arms and lower limbs above knee accounted for 46.15%, 25.21%, 9.40%, 8.55% and 7.69% of the exposed parts, respectively. Dogs, cats and wild animals accounted for 95.73%, 3.42% and 0.85% of the exposed animals, respectively. Stray animals, domesticated animals, neighbors' animals and wild animals accounted for 41.88%, 37.61%, 19.66% and 0.85% of animal sources, respectively. Neither the neighbors’ animals nor domesticated animals were vaccinated against veterinary rabies virus. After exposure, 8.55% of patients went to medical institutions for standard treatment of wounds, 9.40% were vaccinated with human rabies vaccine, and 4.55% of patients with grade III exposure were injected with rabies virus immunoglobulin. The incubation period within 6 months, from 6 months to 1 year, and over 1 year accounted for 72.22%, 14.74%, and 12.04%, respectively. The exposure degree (Z=-1.98, P < 0.05), exposure site (χ2=10.91, P < 0.05) and wound treatment (χ2=15.73, P < 0.05) had statistically significant effects on the incubation period. Among the 11 cases of post-exposure immunization failure, all were grade Ⅲ exposure, 63.63% were exposed to the head and face, 81.81% were not fully vaccinated with human rabies virus vaccine, 63.63% were not immunized with immunoglobulin, and 27.27% were inappropriate wound treatment. Conclusion The key to rabies prevention and control is to standardize dog management, strengthen rabies education, standardize post-exposure wound treatment, timely vaccinate against rabies virus, and inject rabies virus immunoglobulin when necessary.
