Objective To explore the associations between fasting serum lipids and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein ( hsCRP).Methods Serum triglyceride ( TG),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and hsCRP were measured in residents of Chengdu,China.Subjects with potential factors which might influence lipids and hsCRP were excluded,580 subjects [ mean age ( 62.3 ± 6.6 ) years ; male:58.7% ] were finally recruited by random sampling methods. Results There was a weak positive relationship between TG and hsCRP ( r =0.108,P =0.01 ) and a weak negative relationship between HDLC and hsCRP (r =- 0.197,P < 0.001 ),this was also true in the sub-group with BMI < 24 kg/m2 ( r =0.236,-0.140 respectively, all P <0.001 ).In subjects with BMI <24 kg/m2,the hsCRP concentration was significantly higher in subjects with higher TG or lower HDL-C ( all P < 0.05 ).hsCRP increased in proportion with the degree of dyslipidemia. After adjusting for gender,age,TC,LDL-C,fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, history of hypertension and diabetes, smoking and alcohol drinking, logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio for increased hsCRP was 1.970 in subjects with either increased TG or lower HDL-C (P =0.105) and 9.098 in subjects with both higher TG or lower HDL-C levels (P =0.031 ).However, the observed relationship between TG,HDL-C and hsCRP in subjects with BMI < 24 kg/m2 could not be observed in subjects with subjects with BMI > 24 kg/m2despite significant more cardiovascular risk factors in these subjects. Conclusions A weak positive correlation between TG and hsCRP as well as a weak negative correlation between HDL-C and hsCRP was evidenced in the whole cohort suggesting dyslipidemia might be related to enhanced inflammatory status. However, this relationship is not observed in subjects with BMI > 24 kg/m2 despite existence of more cardiovascular risk factors in these subjects.

Objective To examine the in vivo visual imaging of buccal carcinoma with the nearinfrared fluorescent quantum dots. Methods The U14 cells were labeled by endocytosis with QD800 (U14/QD800) which was linked with cell-penetrating peptide. Different number of U14/QD800 was injected under the buccal mucosa of nude mice and Kunming mice separately and imaged at different time to detect the in vivo sensitivity and dynamic imaging of U14/QD800. Results The minimum number of U14/QD800 cells which could be detected by in vivo imaging system was 1 × 104 in nude mice's cheek and 1 × 105 in Kunming mice's. The time for visual imaging of 1 × 104, 1 × 105 and 1 × 106 U14/QD800 cells in nude mice was 3, 7 and 16 d separately, and 3 and 10 d separately in Kunming mice. Conclusions Due to its strong tissue penetration, near-infrared fluorescent quantum dots have great prospects in cancer early diagnosis, visual observation and individual treatment.

Background More and more Chinese drink hot water from water dispensers while many children were scalded due to this change. The present study aimed to propose a feasible strategy for prevention. Methods A retrospective study was conducted for all water dispensers related pediatric burns admitted to Changhai Hospital from January 2005 to December 2009.Results The number of new cases and incidences of pediatric burns due to hot water from water dispensers was significantly increasing year after year.In the total 238 involved cases,175 cases happened on males and 78.9% were at the age of 1-4 years. The burn areas were mainly located in upper extremities. All water dispensers in the surveyed families had no isolate protection devices and 85.2% of their locations were easy for children to reach.Nearly half of the children were in the same room with their guardians when injured.Total 196 burned children were playing the taps of water dispensers before injured,unfortunately,80.6% of them have not been stopped until burned. Conclusion As the kind of bums is quite serious and with bad outcome, some recommendations should be followed, such as buying water dispensers with protection devices, keeping children from touching them and so on.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of the serious complications of diabetes. With high disability, high amputation rate, serious harm to the physical and mental health of diabetes patients.Traditional Chinese medicine drugs for external use has a certain effect and advantages for treatment of DFU.In this paper analyzes the clinical characteristics of DFU and the status of external drug application, and the necessity of research and development of traditional Chinese medicine for DFU treatment. In the article pointed out the difficulties and of the concerns in process of clinical trials for the DFU traditional Chinese medicine research and development. The preliminary recommendations are given in this article.

Objective To investigate the protective effect of erythropoietin(EPO)on the mitochondria in the brain neurons against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion(IR)injury in rats. Methods Thirty SD rats are randomly allocated into 3 groups, namely the EPO group(n=10),IR group(n=10),and shamoperation group(n=10).In EPO group and IR group, the rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)to induce cerebral IR injury, followed by treatment with intraperitonal EPO injection at 3000 U/kg and the same volume of saline, respectively. In the sham operation group, the carofid artery was only isolated without MCAO or subsequent treatment.Seventy-two hours after the IR injury, the mitochondrial membrane potential in the neurons was detected, and the changes in superoxide kismutase(SOD)activity, malondialdehyde(MDA)and nitric oxide(NO)concentrations, and Na+-K+-ATPase activity in the neuronal mitochondria were determined. The number of caspase-3-positive neurons in the hippocampus Was observed immunohistochemically. Results The mitochondrial membrane potential and activities of SOD and Na+-K+-ATPase Were significantly higher.whereas the MDA and NO concentrations and the number of caspase-3-postive neurons significantly lower in EPO group than in IR group after the treatment. Conclusion Protecting the neuronal mitochondrial function is one of the important mechanisms of EPO for brain protection against IR injury, and this mitochondrial protection effect is mediated essentially by stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane potential.
