The project of counterpart assistance has made great achievements, however, the outlay shortage has become the key restriction in sustainable development and role playing as expected. From the view of long-term development and marketing point, it is a must to discuss the issue of “establishing the satisfied system (or active system) to enhance the development of the universities in the west and how to stimulate these universities to enter into the system”. From the economic model in this paper, we can clearly conclude that the government has played a significant role in the process of the development of the universities in the western part of China.

AIM: To establish a simple and repeatable orthotopic animal model of the A549 cell line.METHODS: A549 cells in matrigel were inoculated into left lung or right flank of nude mouse. The growth pattern of A549 tumors and the chemotherapeutic efficacy of carboplatinum were studied. RESULTS: Tumors generated and dispersed widespreadly to contralateral lung. Tumors in lung were less susceptible to carboplatinum than those growing in flank. CONCLUSION: A simple and repeatable orthotopic animal model of the A549 cell line was presented, this allows researchers to evaluate novel compounds and new drugs for treatment of human lung cancer.KEY WORDS A549 cell line; orthotopic model; nude mice

AIM: To study the effect of Lomerizine on the activity of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the bloodbrain barrier(BBB) and search for novel effective P-gp inhibiting agent against multidrug resistance. METH-ODS: Rhodamine123 (Rh123) was used to examine the activity of P-gp and RT-PCR to study the mdr mRNA expression in cultured rat brain microvessel endothelial cells (RBMECs). RESULTS: Lomerizine could increase the cellular Rh123 in RBMECs in a concentration-dependent manner. RT-PCR indicated that lomerizine could not down-regulate the expression of mdr mRNA. CONCLU-SION: Lomerizine can reverse multidrug resistance in the blood-brain barrier by inhibiting the activity of P-gp.KEY WORDS lomerizine; P-glycoprotein; bloodbrain barrier; RT-PCR

Objective To explore the relationship between osteoporosis and chronic vascular complications in elderly male patients with type 2 diabetes and to evaluate its related risk factors.Methods A retrospective study was conducted in 428 elderly type 2 diabetic patients.The bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar spines (L2 ～L4),femoral neck,Ward's triangle were measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry,and chronic vascular complications in patients were tested.The correlation between BMD and chronic vascular complications was analyzed.Results Diabetic course was longer in osteoporosis group than in non-osteoporosis group (P＜0.05).Levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and postprandial blood glucose (PBG) were significantly higher in osteoporosis group than in non-osteoporosis group (P＜ 0.05).The incidences of diabetic nephropathy,diabetic retinopathy,diabetic neuropathy and hypertension were higher in osteoporosis group than in non-osteoporosis group (59.8％ vs.12.0％,41.8％ vs.22.3％,33.6％ vs.24.5％,and 35.7％ vs.26.1％,respectively,all P＜0.05).Logistic analysis showed that diabetic course,FBG and diabetic nephropathy were correlated with diabetic osteoporosis (OR =1.055,1.168,7.401,95％ CI:1.015-1.096,1.073-1.273,4.303-12.727,P=0.007,0.001,0.001).Conclusions Osteoporosis has a close relationship with diabetic microvascular complications in elderly diabetic patients.Diabetic nephropathy plays an important role in the development of diabetic osteoporosis.It is helpful for osteoporosis prevention to early monitor and intervene on microvascular complications index such as urinary albumin in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.

Objective To improve the diagnosis and treatment based on the retrospective clinical analysis of 86 patients with leishmaniasis, an endemic disease caused by various species of Leishmania. Methods The data of 86 consecutive patients with visceral leishmaniasis and lymph node leishmaniasis were retrospectively reviewed, including epidemiological data, clinical manifestations, laboratory features, diagnosis, therapeutic procedures and prognosis. Results There were specific endemic zones of leishmaniasis in Sichuan province. The main clinical symptoms and signs in the initial evaluation were: fever (100%), splenomegaly (100%), enlarged lymph nodes with hepatosplenomegaly (58.1%). All patients were treated with sodium pentavalent antimony gluconate (SPAG). About 95.3% (82/86) of the patients were cured, 3.5% (3/86) improved, and 1.2% (1/86) relapsed. Splenotomy was carried out for 2.3% (2/86) of the patients. The misdiagnosis rate was 30.2%.Conclusions Visceral leishmaniasis has no specific manifestations and is easily misdiagnosed. If leishmaniasis is suspected, bone marrow biopsy and smear examination, lymph node biopsy, rk-39 strip test for visceral leishmaniasis pathogen should be done to improve the outcome. SPAG is the first choice for leishmaniasis chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the relationship between symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and the patients' quality of life (QOL).

METHODSA total of 492 TMD patients were included in this study. The clinical examination results were recorded using Fricton index of temporomandibular joint function. "Visual analog scale (VAS) evaluation of QOL disturbance" was designed to quantitate patients' QOL, to evaluate the degree that the patients QOL was affected.

RESULTSChewing, daily life and emotion among all 8 items of QOL were frequently affected by TMD, and joint clicking had the least influence on QOL. Intermittent closed lock had more severe interference with QOL than joint clicking only. Severe and moderate pain or limited mouth opening affected the QOL more severely than mild pain or mild limited mouth opening. The simple linear relationship between Fricton index and patients' QOL was poor (r < 0.4).

CONCLUSIONSPain is the most frequently seen symptom in TMD. TMD could affect patients' QOL, including both physical and social-psychological functions. The results suggest that the patients' QOL as well as TMD symptoms and signs should be considered in the management of TMD.

Background Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) of macular zone is one of blinding eye diseases.Conventional treatment methods include photodynamic therapy and intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs.However,there are some adverse effects following these treatments.Researches showed that fiajianzhujing decoction,a Chinese herbal medicine,can inhibit CNV.Objective This study was to investigate the impact of drug serum offiajianzhujing decocation (drug serum) on the proliferation of rat choroidal vascular endothelial cells (RCVECs).Methods Jiajianzhujing decoction (0.525 g/ml) was used by intragastric administration with the dosage 20 ml/kg for 3 days,and the abdominal aortic blood was collected 2 hours after last dosage to prepare the drug serum.Cultured RCVECs were divided into 4 groups.CoCl2 with the concentration of 100 μmol/L (100 μl) was added in the medium to establish the anoxic models in the CoCl2 group,and 20％ drug serum was added in the anoxic culture medium in the drug serum+CoCl2 group.Regular culture medium was used in the blank control group,and 20％ pure serum was added in the anoxic culture medium in the pure serum+CoCl2 group.The cells were incubated for consecutive 24 hours,and the growth of the cells was detected by monotetrazolium (MTT) assay as absorbance (A).The expressions of gene and protein of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 α (HIF-1 α) and VEGF in the cells were detected by reverse transcription PCR and Western blot,respectively.This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Eye Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.Results Cultured cells grew well with fusiform shape.Hypoxic cell models were created by adding CoCl2.The mean A values were 0.659± 0.051,0.757±0.553,0.683±0.037 and O.731 ±O.038 in the blank control group,CoCl2 group,drug serum+CoCl2 group and pure serum+CoCl2 group,respectively,and the A value in the CoCl2 group was significantly elevated in comparison with the blank control group and drug serum+CoCl2 group (both at P＜0.O1).The significant differences were found in the relative expressions of HIF-1 α and VEGF among the blank control group,CoCl2 group,drug serum+ CoC12 group and pure serum+CoCl2 group (HIF-1 α:F =3.100,P＜0.05;VEGF mRNA:F =3.420,P＜0.05;HIF-1 α protein:F=470.600,P =0.000;VEGF protein:F =146.700,P =0.000),and the relative expressions of HIF-1α mRNA,VEGF mRNA,HIF-1α protein and VEGF protein in the CoCl2 group were significantly higher than those in the blank control group and drug serum+CoCl2 group (all at P＜0.05).Conclusions Drug serum ofjiajianzhujing decoction can inhibit the growth and proliferation of hypoxic RCVECs by down-regulating the secretion of HIF-1α and VEGF.

AIM To study the therapeutic effect of bone marrow transplantation on mustard gas-poisoned mice. METHODS Mustard-poisoned mice model was constructed by injected mustard gas 20 mg·kg~(-1) subcutaneously. At 4 h, 1 d and 2 d after poisoned by mustard gas, the suspended bone marrow cells (106 cells per time) were injected into mice respectively. After poisoned 3, 5, 7 and 10 d, the numbers of leukocyte and marrow nucleated cells were recorded periodically. At the same time, after poisoned 4 h and 1 d by mustard gas, mice in another group were injected granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) 74 μg·kg~(-1) combined with transplantation and changes of the cell number were observed. RESULTS Compared with poisoned group without transplantion, leukocyte number in bone marrow transplanted group presented ascending trend, but there was no statistical significance until the 10 d after poisoned. However, the number of marrow nucleated cell increased significantly from the 5th day. After mice injected bone marrow cells combined with G-CSF, leukocyte increased markedly in earlier stage compared with transplantation only. CONCLUTION The bone marrow transplantation has significant effects on improvement of marrow hematogenic system inhibited by mustard gas.

Objective To explore the relationship of the level of serum selenium and infantile diarrhea,provide foundation for establishing the therapeutic criteria.Methods Seventy-eight diarrhea children was enrolled in this study,6 -24 months old.Thirty children with acute diarrhea (AD group),26 children with persistent diarrhea (PD group) and 22 children with chronic diarrhea (CD group).The level of serum selenium was measured and compared with another 30 healthy children (control group) of matched sex and age.The level of serum selenium of CD group was compared before and after the recovery.Results The level of serum selenium in AD group and PD group had no significant difference compared with control group [ (51.34 ± 4.84),(48.14 ± 3.05 ) μ g/L vs.(55.08 ± 5.59 ) μ g/L ] (P＞0.05 ).But the level of serum selenium in CD group was significantly lower than that in control group [ (42.13 ± 5.16) μ g/L vs.(55.08 ±5.59) μg/L] (P＜0.05).After treatment for 1 month,the level of serum selenium in CD group was significantly increased than before treatment [ (53.76 ± 8.38 ) μ g/L vs.(42.13 ± 5.16) μ g/L ] (P＜0.05 ).Conclusions The nosogenesis of chronic diarrhea may relate with the level of serum selenium decrease.Therapeutic selenium supplement is important in children with chronic diarrhea.
