PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of balance taping on pain and Range of Motion (ROM). ROM of the knee joint in the elderly with lower limbs arthritis. METHODS: This study was a nonequivalent pretest-posttest design, quasi-experimental study. An experimental group of 35 elderly and a control group of 35 elderly were assigned. Subjects responses to the Visual analogue Scale (VAS) and range of motion scores as measured by a joint goniometer. Data were analyzed by, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: In the experimental treatment group, the pain score was significantly decreased from 6.46 to 2.09 after balance taping (p<.001). In addition, knee joint ROM of the experimental group was significantly increased from 114.80 to 121.92 after balance taping (p=.003, p<.001, p<.001). CONCLUSION: This is a very important study as it is an excellent treatment that nurses can utilize and these data support the efficacy of the method.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of balance taping for elders suffering from leg pain. METHOD: This study was a nonequivalent pretest-posttest design, quasi-experimental study. There were 25 elders in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The degree of leg pain was measured three times. RESULTS: In the experimental group, the leg pain score before taping was 6.28, but 1 hour after the taping was applied it was 3.24, and at 24 hours after the taping was applied, 2.16. The leg pain score for elders in the experimental group decreased significantly but for those in the control group, it hardly changed. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study support the conclusion that balance taping may benefit individuals with leg pain. Also, balance taping therapy can be used as an independent nursing intervention.

A clinical isolate of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis in Korea was found to produce the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase CTX-M-15. The isolate was recovered in 2008 from the stool of a 3-yr-old boy with gastroenteritis. This isolate was found to be resistant to multiple drugs, including ampicillin, piperacillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefepime, and aztreonam. The resistance to cefotaxime was transferred by conjugation to recipient Escherichia coli J53. The patient was eventually successfully treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. This is the first report of the bla (CTX-M-15) gene in S. enterica serotype Enteritidis in Korea.

PURPOSE: Orbital varices, which can lead to proptosis or globe displacement, are caused by Valsalva's maneuver or bending forward. Most of the orbital varices are treated conservatively, but surgical treatment is necessary for severe cosmetic or functional problems. We report a case of orbital organizing hematoma accompanied by an orbital varix which was successfully removed surgically without complications such as intraoperative bleeding. CASE SUMMARY: A 78-year-old female presented with the complaint of 4 mm proptosis and hyperglobus of left eye. Orbit magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well demarcated extraconal mass in the inferior orbit which appeared to be an orbital varix. Initially, we decided to monitor the patient without surgery because proptosis was reduced to 1 mm within a week. However, after 5 months, the symptoms suddenly worsened, specifically, 4 mm of proptosis with severe hyperglobus and pain. MRI showed a 29.7 x 21.2 x 23.7 mm mass compressing the globe upward. Six weeks of conservative care did not improve the symptoms and we eventually performed an anterior orbitotomy through the inferior conjunctiva. There was a minor bleeding during the surgery. Based on the histological test, the mass was determined to be an organizing hematoma covered by a membrane. At 8 months postoperatively, symptoms had not recurred. CONCLUSIONS: Orbital varices are usually treated conservatively since its surgical removal is known to have risks. Nonetheless, if an MRI shows an orbital organizing hematoma, it can be surgically debulked successfully without complications when a chronic hemorrhage from orbital varix causes serious proptosis and globe deviation.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationships between estimated cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) and trans-lamina cribrosa pressure difference (TLCPD) in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in Korean population. METHODS: A total of 10,801 eyes were included from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V. All participants (aged 19 years or older) were classified as non-glaucomatous group, OAG suspect group and OAG group. CSFP was calculated as CSFP (mm Hg) = 0.44 body mass index (kg/m²) + 0.16 diastolic blood pressure (mm Hg) - 0.18 age (years) - 1.91. TLCPD was calculated by subtracting CSFP from intraocular pressure. RESULTS: The mean estimated CSFP was (8.7 ± 3.3 mm Hg vs. 11.6 ± 3.7 mm Hg, 11.2 ± 3.8 mm Hg vs. 11.6 ± 3.7 mm Hg) was lower, and the mean TLCPD (5.7 ± 4.4 mm Hg vs. 2.2 ± 4.4 mm Hg, 3 ± 4.7 mm Hg vs. 2.2 ± 4.4 mm Hg) was higher in the OAG group and in the OAG suspect group than in the non-glaucomatous control group, respectively (p < 0.001). After adjusting relating factor with CSFP and TLCPD using simple linear regression and multivariate analyses, the mean estimated CSFP was distributed lower (p < 0.001; beta: -0.12; B: -2.306; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -2.717, -1.895) in OAG group than in non-glaucomatous group and the mean TLCPD was distributed higher (p < 0.001; beta: 0.099; B: 1.349; 95% CI: 0.977, 1.72; p < 0.001; beta: 0.118; B: 2.776; 95% CI: 2.264, 3.289) in OAG suspect group and in OAG group than in non-glaucomatous group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Estimated CSFP and calculated TLCPD showed essential association with OAG presence. It supports the potential role of low CSFP in the pathogenesis of OAG.

Objective: The number of elderly patients in Korea has been on the rise recently, and hence the number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) elderly patients is also rising. The causes of cardiac arrest for the elderly vary, and, it is difficult to predict the recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in OHCA patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to ascertain the predictive value of arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA) results in achieving ROSC in the elderly. Methods: A retrospective analysis of emergency department patients with OHCA was performed at the Kangwon National University Hospital, Korea from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019. The initial ABGA results were compared between two patient groups, those who had achieved a return of spontaneous circulation and those who had not. Univariate and multivariable analyses were performed to elucidate the factors associated with ROSC. Results: Overall, 229 OHCA patients were included in the final analysis. The lactate level was independently related to ROSC. A receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was plotted to obtain the best cutoff value. The lactate level <9.85 mmol/L showed the largest area under the ROC curve (AUC) to predict ROSC (AUC, 0.666; 95% confidence interval, 0.588-0.743). Multiple regression analysis was performed using the cutoff value, which was a lactate level of 9.85 (odds ratio, 2.907; 95% confidence interval, 1.432-5.902; P=0.003). Conclusion The ABGA results during the cardiopulmonary resuscitation of OHCA patients, showed that the lactate level was an independent factor associated with ROSC. The lactate cutoff value was 9.85 mmol/L.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the characteristics of suicidal attempters, including pre-hospital patients and those who visited the emergency department. METHODS: Suicidal attempters who had been reported to the 119 call center were selected between July 2015 and June 2016. Sex, age, place, methods of suicidal attempt, season, time, and suicide success rate were reviewed in the fire center records. RESULTS: A total 961 suicide attempters were enrolled. Among them, 53.6% were males who had an approximately 2.6 times higher mortality than that of females (9.2%). The most preferred place to commit suicide was the home in both sexes (68.0% in male, 82.8% in female) and the most preferred methods was drug intoxication, particularly pesticide. The method with the highest mortality was hanging and the lowest was self-harm. The season of the highest mortality was spring. The success of suicide and the time variation were similar. Most of the un-transferred patients also selected fatal suicide attempts compared to transfer patients. CONCLUSION: Unlike previous studies, this study includes information on un-transferred patients. Overall, the probability of death was highest as more than 50 years men chose hanging as a method, which had an influence on the un-transferred patients group.

PURPOSE: A descriptive correlational study was designed to examine the relationship of trait anger and anger expression to blood pressure, cholesterol, and depression in middle-aged Korean men. In addition, this study investigated the mediating effect of social support in relation to anger and other variables. METHODS: Two hundred and ninety nine men aged 40 to 64 years were recruited from a health center at K University Hospital located in Ansan City, Kyungki province, Korea. The instruments used were Spielberger's state trait anger expression inventory-the Korean version for trait anger and anger expression, Beck's depression inventory for depression, and a Personal resource questionnaire for perceived social support. RESULTS: Men with high trait anger showed significantly higher systolic blood pressure(BP) and diastolic BP. The level of cholesterol did not have a significant relationship with trait anger and anger expression. The severity of depression was significantly higher in men with high trait anger or more frequent uses of anger-in or anger-out. The perceived social support had a significant mediating effect in relation to trait anger and depression. CONCLUSIONS: Various nursing interventions for managing anger or improving social support need to be developed in a future study.
