Intense pulsed light (IPL) Quantum SR(TM) systems are high-intensity light sources, which emit polychromatic light. Unlike laser systems, these flashlamps work with noncoherent light in a broad wavelength spectrum of 560-1200 nm. IPL Quantum SR(TM) has been effective for the treatment of photoaging skin as a nonablative method. Three patients with photoaged skin were treated with fifth full-face treatments at 3-4 week intervals using IPL Quantum SR(TM). The cut-off filters of 560 nm and integrated contact cooling system were utilized for treatments. After the last treatments, the patients showed the overall improvement in clinical appearance, reduction in pigmentation and telangiectasia and fine wrinkle with smoothening of skin textures. Histological evaluations showed new collagen production after treatment. Full-face photorejuvenation using IPL Quantum SR(TM) can be an effective treatment modality for photoaged skin. We report herein IPL photorejuvenation is safe and effective in skin rejuvenation.

Striae Distensae is a very common cosmetic problem. The effectiveness of various lasers, such as the 585-nm pulsed dye laser on the treatment of striae distensae has recently been reported. However, the potential pigmentary alteration of dark skin by pulsed dye laser is known. Thermage is a radiofrequency capable of delivering higher energy fluences to a greater volume of tissue than nonablative lasers, with no epidermal injury. We report three patients who had striae distensae. They were treated with Thermage and 585-nm pulsed dye laser. The treatment was effective and safe for dark skin.

These study was designed to observe the appearance and the characteristics of apoptotic cells during the development of knee joint in rat. The fetus were collected on the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th day of pregnancy. In this study, TUNEL staining, electron microscopic investigation and immunocytochemical gold labeling techniques were used. In the immuno-cytochemical gold labeling techniques, primary antibodies were used, which were to be polyclonal rabbit anti-mouse/ rat Bax, polyclonal rabbit anti-tissue transglutaminase C, and polyclonal goat anti-cpp32p20. The samples were observed under JEOL 1200 EX-II transmission electron microscope. The results were as follows. 1. In a 16-day-old fetus, between femur and tibia cartilages, mesenchymal cells were observed. Mesenchymal cells had marginated heterochromatin and dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum. 2. In a 17-day-old fetus, the knee joint clefts were first formed. In the primordial cruciate ligaments between the cartilages, capillaries were scattered. The apoptotic cells, which had fragmented and condensed nucleus, showed in the synovium. And necrotic cells, which had nuclear chromatin margination, perinuclear cisternae, and dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum, also were observed in the joint cleft surface. 3. From the 18-day-old fetus, phagocytic synovial cells and secretory synovial cells could be confirmed. The apoptotic cells were not seen. 4. In a 17-day-old fetus, a few cells were positive for TUNEL reaction in the joint cleft region. 5. In a 17-day-old fetus, Bax were marked on the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum of apoptotic cells. Also, it was marked at the phagocytosed apoptotic bodies in the neighboring cells. 6. In a 17-day-old fetus, the tissue Transglutaminase C were marked in the perinuclear region, vacuoles, cell membrane and extracellular matrix of the apoptotic cells. Also, it was marked at the phagocytosed apoptotic bodies in the neighboring cells. 7. In a 17-days-old fetus, CPP32 labeling were marked in the cytoplasm of the apoptotic cells. Practically, it was distributed between the phagocytosed apoptotic bodies and the neighboring cells. On the basis of above findings, it is obvious that the joint cleft are first formed in a 17-day-old fetus, a few cells are to be TUNEL positive signals, and the apoptotic cells contain Bax, tissue Transglutaminase C, and CPP32. Therefore the apoptotic cells and the necrotic cells are appeared in the 17-day-old fetus, and these cells are concerned with joint cleft formation.

Korean Journal of Anatomy 1998;31(4):525-534
Nitric oxide(NO) is thought to play an important role in development and plasticity of brain. In this study, we aimed to examine the expression of neuronal NOS and NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity in the developing rat brain. The results show that there is a great variation in the time of appearance of the earliest NOS containing cells depending on their location: At the 15th embryonic day weakly stained cells were present in caudate-putamen, and neurons in the sensory trigeminal nucleus and the solitary nucleus displayed an intense staining. The NOS neurons in orbital neocortex, bed nucleus of stria terminalis, paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, lateral hypothalamic area and mammillary body appeared first at the 18th embryonic day. The supraoptic nucleus and superior and inferior colliculi also weakly labeled at the 18th embryonic day, At the loth embryonic day, positive cells appeared in horizontal limb of diagonal band, anterior olfactory nucleus and parafascicular thalamic nucleus. In the cerebellum, weak NOS staining was present in fibers and cells situated below Purkinje cert layer. The Purkinje cell layer displayed a weak, rather diffuse activity throughout the cerebellum at postnatal day 0. At the 4th postnatal day. the reaction product in the Purkinje cell layer became more distinct. At the 10th postnatal day, the inner part of molecular layer became populated by NOS positive basket cells, and the reaction products on the Purkinje cells began to disappear. The present results showed that NOS in the rat brain is expressed in different populations of neurons at different stages of development. This expression pattern of NOS suggests that NO may play a role in the developmental remodelling of the mammalian brain.

BACKGROUND: We wanted to evaluate whether a minimal extrathyroid extension (METE) is associated with the clinicopathological parameters that are indicative of a poor prognosis, including lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis at the time of the initial diagnosis and tumor recurrence, in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and especially in the patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of patients with PTC and who had undergone total thyroidectomy with/without subsequent 131I remnant ablation at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital from January 1998 through December 2005. A total of 557 patients with PTC were enrolled in the study. We excluded 13 patients with an unknown status of extension and 29 patients with massive ETE. RESULTS: Of the 515 patients, 401 were found to have a METE. We analyzed the 464 patients who were without distant metastasis at the time of the initial diagnosis and who had a follow-up duration of more than 6 months. METE was not significantly associated with tumor recurrence during the follow-up period (median follow-up period: 122 months, range: 6-142 months): 8% vs. 15% of the patients with and without METE had tumor recurrence, respectively (P = 0.069 by the log-rank test). We analyzed the effect of tumor size in the patients with METE. Size was not significantly associated with tumor recurrence (P = 0.374 by the log-rank test). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that METE might not be a prognostic factor to predict tumor recurrence in patients with PTC, including PTMC.

The germination rate and longevity of seeds of Gastrodia elata Blume have been observed for 48 weeks using Mycena osmundicola strain H-21, one of fungi stimulating seed germination. Storage condition of post-harvest seeds was observed in the different temperature ranges of -30degrees C, -5degrees C, 5degrees C and 30degrees C for 48 weeks. After storage period of 48 weeks, the germination rate of G. elata was 65.7% at 5degrees C and 71.6% at -5degrees C, respectively. Although the germination rate of G. elata was 77.3% for 11 weeks at 25degrees C, the germination rate had been decreased gradually to 49.3% at 13 weeks, 0.3% at 23 weeks and then 0% at 25 weeks. The germination rate was reached to the level of 10% for 2 weeks at -30degrees C and then decreased to 0%.

Sixteen genomic DNA simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers of Lentinula edodes were developed from 205 SSR motifs present in 46.1-Mb long L. edodes genome sequences. The number of alleles ranged from 3–14 and the major allele frequency was distributed from 0.17–0.96. The values of observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.00–0.76 and 0.07–0.90, respectively. The polymorphic information content value ranged from 0.07–0.89. A dendrogram, based on 16 SSR markers clustered by the paired hierarchical clustering' method, showed that 33 shiitake cultivars could be divided into three major groups and successfully identified. These SSR markers will contribute to the efficient breeding of this species by providing diversity in shiitake varieties. Furthermore, the genomic information covered by the markers can provide a valuable resource for genetic linkage map construction, molecular mapping, and marker-assisted selection in the shiitake mushroom.

Journal of Preventive Medicine 2016;28(9):891-895
Objective To investigate the cause of an outbreak that with fever, chest tightness, cough as the main symptoms in a production enterprise of solar cells, and to provide suggestrons for the on -site disposal and preventing of re -issued. Methods Clinical features and epidemiological characteristics of the cases were analyzed. The workplaces and treatment of industrial wastes were investigated.Legionella in the throat swab sample and residual water during the processes were detected.Simulation test for poisonous gas from waste incineration was performed using a portable GC -MS detector. Results 52 cases were found and the attack rate was 42.76%.The case distribution was consistent with the characteristics of the outbreak of a homologous exposure.Legionella test result was negative.Clinical symptoms of patients were similar to those of fume fever. In the 1 2 jobs, the higher the amount of compressed air used in the job,the higher the incidence rate was,and there were statistical correlation between the two (P <0.01 ).A large number of fluorine -containing solid waste was burned in the evening before the onset of the disease. The compressed air station was downwind from the location of waste incineration, and the simulation test showed that the concentrations of fluobenzene and two -fluobenzene were 435 and 51 3 mg/m3 ,respectively. Conclusion The toxic smoke produced by illegal incineration of fluorine -containing solid waste, from the compressed air station into the workshop, causing the workers exposed to organic fluoride poisoning, and then the fluoropolymer fume fever outbreak.Fortunately,we disposed it timely and effectively, and all cases quickly recovered and no secondary occurred.
