OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive and psychological characteristics of patients who visited psychiatric outpatient clinic with military service suitability issues. METHODS: Since January, 2017 to September, 2018, patients were recruited from the department of psychiatry of university hospital. Participants were diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria by board certified psychiatrists. And each of participants tested with K-WAIS-IV, K-SCL-95 by clinical psychologist. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. RESULTS: The results indicated 24.6% of the patients have significantly low level of intellectual functioning. and 10.8% of the patients have borderline level of intellectual functioning, and 26.3% of them were below average. The results of psychological characteristics showed patients have cautious and potentially dangerous level of depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, and suicidal idea. And PTSD subscale's mean score was above problematic level. Next, we divided patients into two groups based on question of whether the patient is eligible to serve in the military service or not arises from recruitment process or army training center. But two group didn't differ significantly. And for further analyses, we also divided patients into two groups based on if they got single psychiatric diagnosis or more than one psychiatric diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that group which has coexisting psychiatric disorders were more depressed, had higher level of anger and aggression, and had more serious levels of suicidal ideas than single psychiatric diagnosis group. The implications and limitations were discussed along with some suggestions for the future studies.

As a result of comparison within the military group following the periods of assessment, military group did not show the significant differences on the overall scales of MMPI-2-RF. Conclusions ：The present study showed that military group tends to report their psychological distress more exaggeratedly. In addition, they had significantly elevated not only emotional distress such as depression and anxiety but interpersonal problem. The implications and limitations were discussed along with some suggestions for the future studies.

Background: Sleep is an important physiological process that is required to perform daily functions. Sleep duration is reported to be correlated withobesity. This study investigated the association between sleep duration and abdominal obesity in Korean adult male. Methods: We used data from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted during 2016–2017. In total, 3,997 maleaged >20 years were included. The frequency and weighting percentage of sleep duration were calculated. Chi-square test was performed withRao–Scott calibration. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association of sleep duration with abdominal obesity. Results: The overall effect of abdominal obesity on sleep duration was significant. The probability of developing abdominal obesity when the averagesleep duration was below than 5 hours was 1.495 times higher than that when it was 7 hours. Conclusion Sleep duration was related to abdominal obesity in Korean adult male.

Objectives: ：The purpose of this study was to explore comparison of clinical characteristics among Anxiety disorder, Depressive disorder, and Co-morbid of Anxiety disorder and Depressive disorder. Methods: ：Since January, 2017 to May, 2019, patients were recruited from the department of psychiatry of Hanyang University Guri Hospital. Participants were diagnosed Anxiety disorder, Depressive disorder, and Co-morbid of Anxiety disorder and Depressive disorder using DSM-5 criteria by board certified psychiatrists or clinical psychologists. And each of participants tested with MMPI-2 and clinical psychologists were converted MMPI-2 to MMPI-2-RF. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results: ：The results indicated EID, RC2, HLP, SAV, and INTR-r were the highest in Co-morbid of Anxiety disorder and Depressive disorder group. And BXD, RC4, JCP, and AGGR-r were the highest in Depressive disorder group. Conclusions ：The results indicated that Co-morbid of Anxiety disorder and Depressive disorder group were more severe internalizing dysfunction like lower positive emotion, helplessness, social avoidance and discomfort than single-diagnosed group. Single Depressive disorder group were more serious externalizing dysfunction like anger and aggression than single Anxiety disorder and Co-morbid of Anxiety disorder and Depressive disorder. The implications and limitations were discussed.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is a type of bacteria that typically infects the pulmonary system, and NTM–central nervous system (CNS) infection, which occurs in the brain, is a very rare disease. A 64-year-old female patient presented with seizures as the main symptom and was found to have a mass of less than 1 cm in the right temporal lobe with accompanying edema. Although diseases such as tumor metastasis and parasitic cyst were suspected, the patient underwent a surgical resection, and NTM-CNS infection with abscess was diagnosed through biopsy. Antibiotic treatment was initiated after surgery, and the patient has been followed up without any significant symptoms. In this report, we review a rare case of NTM-CNS infection and discuss the understanding and treatment of this disease.

PURPOSE: DNA flow cytometry is a simple and easy method to assess the DNA content and the cell-cycle distribution of a tumor cell. The prognostic significance of the DNA content and the S-phase fraction in a gastric carcinoma has been controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of the nuclear DNA content and the S-phase fraction in patients with a gastric carcinoma. METHODS: Between May 1995 and March 1996, 94 patients who were underwent a gastric resection for a gastric carcinoma were evaluated with DNA flow cytometry. Of them, 88 patients underwent a gastric resection with curative intent. The relationship of variable clinicopathological factors and of recurrence pattern to survival and nuclear DNA content were assessed. RESULTS: The mean age was 55 years. 55 patients (58.5%) exbitied diploidy and 39 patients (41.5%) aneuploidy. There was no relationship between the clinicopathological factors and either the ploidy pattern or the S-phase fraction. Though the recurrence and its pattern were not different between the two ploidy group (p=0.860, 0.137), diploidy tended to recur locoregionally and aneuploidy hematogenously. CONCLUSION: The ploidy pattern was a significant prognostic factor in gastric carcinomas, but should be interpreted carefully.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to classify patients with suicidal tendencies into suicide attempts (SA), suicidal ideation (SI), and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and to identify differences in temperaments and characters of the groups. It also aimed to identify difference between the groups and non-suicidal tendencies. Methods: Using psychiatric diagnostic data of 195 patients, temperaments and characters were measured with the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the level of depression was measured with the Beck Depression Inventory. The subjects were classified into SA, SI, NSSI, psychiatric patients without suicidal tendencies (PP), and non-patient (Normal) groups, and multivariate analysis of variance and multinomial logistic regression were conducted. Results: The NSSI group had higher novelty seeking compared to the SI group, while having higher harm avoidance, lower persistence, and lower self-directedness compared to the SA group. Furthermore, low persistence was a better predictor for the SA group between SA and NSSI groups, and low novelty seeking was found to be a better predictor for the SI group between the SI and NSSI groups. Conclusion As a result, the group differences in temperaments and characters were found, which would be useful to identify patients with suicidal tendencies and provide appropriate interventions tailored to the temperaments and characters of each group.

Purpose: We report a case of visual impairment due to circulatory failure in the central retinal artery during blow-out fracture repair.Case summary: A 16-year-old male with no underlying disease was diagnosed with a trapdoor type medial orbital wall blow-out fracture after a motorcycle accident and underwent blow-out fracture repair. During the surgery, his left eye was nearly completely dilated. Postoperatively, the visual acuity in the left eye was hand motion and there was ptosis of the left upper eyelid. Concerned with the possibility of orbital implant compression, computed tomography was performed immediately and a second operation was performed. However, there was no direct compression originating from the intraocular implant or any signs of active bleeding. The following day, optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography revealed a cherry-red spot on the central fovea with edema of the inner retinal layer and delayed arterial circulation. Under a diagnosis of incomplete central retinal artery occlusion, the patient was treated with intraocular pressure-lowering eye drops and intravenous mannitol. Despite prompt intervention, the visual acuity of the left eye did not improve beyond 0.04 at the 2-year follow-up. Conclusions When there is visual impairment and pupillary dilation after blow-out fracture repair, we should consider not only compressive factors but also the possibility of central retinal artery occlusion or circulatory failure. In such cases, retinal examinations should be done to assess the retinal blood flow and enable early detection of any complications allowing prompt appropriate intervention.

Purpose: We report an atypical case of ischemic oculomotor palsy occurring sequentially in both eyes and then improving, followed by a new abducens palsy in a diabetic patient with poor blood sugar control.Case summary: A 51-year-old woman presented with diplopia, dizziness, and pain in the right eye and was diagnosed with oculomotor palsy in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging of her brain was normal but glycated hemoglobin concentration was 13.4%. After 2 months, the third nerve palsy in the right eye had recovered completely but a new third nerve palsy occurred in the left eye. 1 month later, the symptoms had improved, and the patient did not return to our clinic until 18 months later, when she returned with new diplopia. This time, she was diagnosed with a sixth nerve palsy in the left eye and was observed while controlling her blood sugar. She recovered after 4 months. Conclusions Generally, cranial nerve palsies occur unilaterally in situations that can cause ischemia, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyperlipidemia. Rarely, they occur bilaterally, or two or more cranial nerve palsies occur simultaneously. However, it is very rare that cranial nerve palsy occurs sequentially in both eyes under the same systemic blood sugar control. Diabetic patients with poor blood sugar control require long-term monitoring, considering the possibility of symptoms developing in both eyes with a time lag or other forms of ischemic cranial nerve palsy.
