The purpose of this study was to investigate food sanitation status in elderly welfare facilities and assess the performance of food sanitation practices. Twenty elderly welfare facilities out of 85 located in Seoul with a capacity of fewer than 50 persons participated. The food sanitation status of worktable, kitchen utensils (knives, cutting boards, ladles, spoons), and tableware and bowls were examined by ATP bioluminescence. The results found that the ATP value of knife was the highest. Those of ladles appeared relatively higher than others. Meanwhile, the tableware and bowls, although washed everyday after meals, had the lowest ATP value. This study also conducted a survey on the food sanitation practices of 32 cooking employees in the 20 facilities. Fifty-six percent were in their 40s, and 53% had graduated from high school. More than half (66%) of them had no certification of cooking. Half of the respondents had worked for at least 5 years in food service facilities, and had received food sanitation training. Among them, 31% said they applied food sanitation training while working, and 47% responded the training was very helpful. The foodservice employees demonstrated good food sanitation practices. The results show that food sanitation performance of the workers significantly differed according to their age, education level, total work experience in food service facilities, chef certification, and prior food sanitation experience.

Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a potentially life-threatening complication in many autoimmune diseases. Early recognition and intervention are essential for a favorable outcome. Neonatal lupus, an acquired autoimmune disease in neonates caused by the transplacental passage of maternal autoantibodies, is rare and usually self-limited. Herein, we report a case of MAS in a patient with neonatal lupus, which improved with intravenous immunoglobulin.

Cutaneous Müllerian cyst (CMC) is a rare benign cystic lesion that typically occurs on the lower extremity of young females shortly after puberty. They have been widely regarded as Müllerian heterotopias due to the morphological similarities of the cyst lining cells to the epithelium of the fallopian tubes. A 16-year-old female presented with a two-year history of a solitary, subcutaneous mass involving the left ankle. She had no specific symptoms associated with the skin lesion. However, the lesion had been growing in size. Histopathological findings revealed cystic structures lined by pseudostratified ciliated cuboidal to columnar cells, accompanying intraluminal papillary projection. The immunohistochemical staining profiles, including positive staining for estrogen and progesterone receptors, were characteristic of the fallopian tube epithelium. After being surgically removed, the lesion was cured without recurrence. Based on her typical presentation and histopathological findings, we present this patient as a case of CMC.

Infants who are born between 24 hours and 1 year of age require extreme caution in their care due to their fragility. However, if there are multiple risk factors associated with the infant, caretaker, household, and surrounding circumstances, providing proper and appropriate care becomes problematic. This difficulty in caring for infants can contribute to abuse, neglect, or even death. This study investigates unexplained infant deaths that occur in the presence of multiple psychosocial risk factors. This study aimed to explore the relationship between various psychosocial risk factors and sudden, unexplained infant deaths. We examined nine cases from the autopsy archive of the National Forensic Service using a statistical approach. Among these cases, three were subject to legal action, while six were closed without further legal process. Although it was difficult to establish a clear relationship between death and abuse or neglect in the six cases, all were found to have experienced a harsh environment that was similar to abuse or neglect. We discuss the implications of our findings for understanding infant deaths and legal outcomes and propose a new framework to understand the deaths of infants.

BACKGROUND: Solar lentigines are the most common form of benign epidermal pigmentation and one of the major cosmetic concerns in Korea. A 532 nm Q-switched neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (QSND) laser is typically used for the treatment, but the occurrence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is not rare. Recently, the use of picosecond (PS) lasers has emerged in pursuit of better outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To objectively compare the efficacy and safety of 532 nm PS and QSND lasers for the treatment of solar lentigines. METHODS: Twenty patients with solar lentigines were enrolled in a prospective, randomized split-face, single-blind study. One side of each face was treated using a 532 nm PS laser, and the other side using a 532 nm QSND laser. After one treatment, all patients were followed up for evaluation after 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The clinical clearance was assessed by three blinded dermatologists using a 5-point quartile improvement scale (QIS). Subjective satisfaction, development of PIH, pain scale during treatment, and adverse problems were also recorded. RESULTS: Clinical clearance measured by QIS showed that the PS laser was more effective than the QSND laser. Subjective satisfaction and pain scale did not significantly differ between the two groups. The incidence of PIH was 5% in sides treated with the PS laser, and 30% with the QSND laser. CONCLUSION Both 532 nm PS laser and QSND laser were effective for the treatment of solar lentigines, but the PS laser was more effective with less PIH development.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to establish the test-retest reliability of word recognition score (WRS) using Korean standard monosyllabic word lists for adults (KS-MWL-A) recently developed based on the international standard for speech audiometry (ISO 8253-3:2012). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects consisted of 159 adults aged to 18 to 25 years with normal hearing sensitivity. WRSs were obtained in 2 dB steps from the level of speech recognition thresholds to the level of 86% correct responses or greater. After one or two weeks, retest was performed. Correlation, confidence interval (CI) and prediction interval (PI) were calculated for the reliability. RESULTS: Correlation coefficients were 0.88 for 50 test words, 0.76 for 25 and 0.61 for 10 words. Results also showed that 95% CIs and PIs were narrower for 25 and 50 test words than those for 10 test words. CONCLUSIONS: Korean WRS using the KS-MWL-A has high reliability for 25 and 50 test words, but relatively low for 10 words. It suggested that 95% CIs for each test words would be criteria for significant differences in WRS for groups and 95% PIs at each score of WRS could be utilized for a considerable difference for each individual at retest.
