PURPOSE: The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional study of cause-and-effect relationship, which used the 7th year data of the Panel Study on Korean Children, to investigate the effects of parenting stress, depression, and family interactions of the parents of early school-age children on children's subjective happiness. METHODS: The present study included data of 1419 pairs of parents who participated in the mother and father survey of the Panel Study on Korean Children. The effects of parenting stress, depression, and parental family interactions on children's subjective happiness were analyzed as actor and partner effects using path analysis. RESULTS: Parenting stress had an actor effect on depression; maternal parenting stress (β=−.21, p < .001) and depression (β=−.30, p < .001) had an actor effect on maternal family interaction; and paternal parenting stress (β=−.18, p < .001) and depression (β=−.17, p < .001) had a partner effect on maternal family interaction. Paternal parenting stress was found to have an actor effect on paternal family interaction (β=−.30, p < .001), and parental depression was found to have actor effect (β=−.23, p < .001) and maternal depression had a partner effect on paternal family interactions (β=−.22, p < .001). Children's subjective happiness was found to have a statistically significant relationship with maternal family interaction (β=.40, p < .001). CONCLUSION: The significance of the study is in its provision of basic data for adjusting parents' family interactions that are closely related to the growth and development of children by confirming the effect of parents' parenting stress, depression, and family interaction on children's subjective happiness.

The Dr. LEE Jong-wook—Seoul Project (DLSP) in the Lao People'0s Democratic Republic (PDR) is a long-term development cooperation initiative aimed at upgrading the medical education capacity at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in the Lao PDR. Under the project, eight faculty members from UHS were trained at the Seoul National University College of Medicine for a 12-month period during 2010–2011. Using a training-of-trainers model, we estimated the effect of DLSP on the learning outcomes of students, which was measured using the standard test scores of the students. The questionnaire developed by the Medical Education Assessment Consortium in Korea was given to the students and both the percent-correct and standardized scores were examined. The evaluation strategy was to compare the learning outcomes of the students taught by the trainees with those that were not and to compare the medical topics taught by the trainees with other topics. It was found that the first group of trainees in the DLSP was associated with an increase of 1.5 in the percent-correct test scores for basic medicine. While the interpretation requires caution, it is consistent with the view that a training program for faculty members could be effective in improving the teaching capacity of medical schools in developing countries.

In Korea, there are over 13,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed annually. Early screening is crucial in reducing breast cancer mortality. Mammography is known to be the standard method of early screening for breast cancer. With increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and the use of screening mammograms, breast cancers are increasingly being diagnosed at earlier stages. Korean national health screening program recommends women aged 40 years or older should receive mammography every 1~2 years with breast self examination and clinical breast examination. And breast sonography and MRI have been added in screening. The screening guidelines for the breast cancer are continually changing. These guidelines are modified according to risk factors. Here, we investigated what are current evidence-based screening methods for breast cancer.

Gonadoblastoma occurs almost always in association with a Y chromosome cell line, and developes in one third of patients with Mixed gonadal dysgenesis. Removing of gonads of intersex patients with the Y chromosome is very important because of the strong association of the genesis of tumor in dysgenetic gonads with the presence of a Y chromosome. But it is always possible that an XY cell line could be missed, or that a fragment from Y chromosome could have been translocated and not discovered by chromosomal analysis. PCR with Y specific probe or Southern blotting would reveal the presence of a Y or a translocated fragment. We experienced an 18-year-old woman represent with primary amenorrhea who had 45,X/46,X,+mar. Y-specific PCR revealed that the marker chromosome was drived from Y chromosome. After both gonadectomy and clitorial recession, we found the gonadoblastoma in dysgenetic testis. So we report it with brief review of literatures.

Background: Hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increase parenting stress and familial conflict. Among parentrelated factors, maternal mental health has been studied in-depth, but studies on paternal factors in this context are scarce. This cross-sectional study was conducted of children with ADHD and their parents in South Korea. We investigated the relationships between ADHD symptom severity of children and the mental health of their mothers and fathers. Methods: The study included 70 children with ADHD and their 140 married heterosexual parents (70 fathers and 70 mothers). Children completed the Child Depression Inventory and State-Anxiety Inventory for children, and their parents completed the Korean ADHD rating scale-IV, Adult ADHD self-report scale, State-Anxiety Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Parental Stress Scale. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between children’s ADHD symptoms and maternal anxiety symptom severity, whereby more severe ADHD symptoms were associated with more severe maternal anxiety symptoms. There was also a significant positive correlation between maternal anxiety symptom severity and paternal parenting stress severity, whereby more severe maternal anxiety was associated with more severe paternal parenting stress. A mediation model showed that paternal parenting stress severity was not directly related to children’s ADHD symptoms, but the severity of maternal anxiety mediated this relationship. Conclusion The present study found the importance of mental health in mothers of children with ADHD and the interrelatedness of mental health within families. Future assessments and treatment of children with ADHD should include both the children and their parents.

A large parosteal osteoma arising on the surface of the right clavicle of a 39-year-old male patient was suspected preoperatively as a parosteal osteosarcoma. The lesion was treated with wide resection and allograft reconstruction. In this case report, we discuss the accurate diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment for unusual clavicular tumors.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of basic psychological needs and support of health professionals on the self care agency of inpatients with schizophrenia. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was based on the basic psychological needs theory, a sub-theory of the self-determination theory (SDT). Participants were 172 inpatients with schizophrenia from four mental hospitals in two areas. Data were collected from self-report questionnaires administered June-September 2019. Data were analyzed using the t-test, one-way ANOVAs with Scheffé’s test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, multiple regression and PROCESS macro mediation analysis with IBM SPSS 22.0. Results: Basic psychological needs and support of health professionals showed a positive correlation with the self care agency. The results of the regression indicate the basic psychological needs and support of health professionals were predictors of self care agency. Conclusion The results suggest that basic psychological needs and support of health professionals are needed to improve the self care agency of inpatients with schizophrenia. Thus, the mental nursing practice needs a program for improving the self-care agency of inpatients with schizophrenia.

An 18-year-old miniature Appaloosa stallion presented with 6 months of history of sanguineous crusts on medial hind limbs and discomfort of micturition. Cauliflower-like and small masses were treated with cryotherapy for 6 months, but the regrowth of masses occurred. Subsequently, local excision via laser and topical treatment with 5% 5-fluorouracil for 5 months were followed. However, the horse was euthanized 4 months later due to regrowth of the masses. The mass was diagnosed as penile papilloma with cellular atypia and Equus caballus papillomavirus type 2 (EcPV-2) DNA was detected. This is the first report of equine penile neoplasm with EcPV-2 infection in Asia.

PURPOSE: This research was designed to evaluate the chronic effect of isolated lung perfusion (ILP) with cisplatin on dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen dogs were divided into three groups. Group I was in ILP without cisplatin, group II with 2.5 mg/kg and group III with 5.0 mg/kg of cisplatin for 30 minutes respectively. Serial blood samples were taken before and after ILP for quantitative analysis of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and blood urea nitrogen/creatinine (BUN/Cr). The specimens from the lung were obtained 2 weeks after ILP. RESULTS: There were no statistic significant differences in LDH concentration according to the time interval among the groups. The LDH concentration peaked at 1 week after ILP and declined thereafter to the pre-ILP concentration. The concentration of BUN/Cr was in normal range. Histologic examination showed no pathologic change. No significant histopathologic differences were found in the pulmonary parenchyme and vasculature among the groups. All of the dogs survived without complication 2 weeks after ILP. CONCLUSION: In ILP with cisplatin of 5.0 mg/kg in normal dog, the toxicity of cisplatin itself was not observed. With further study about the technique of ILP with cisplatin it would be effective to deliver high concentration of cisplatin into the target tissue minimizing lung damage.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain reference values, to suggest optimal recording and stimulation site for radial motor nerve conduction study (RmNCS), and to analyze the correlation among RmNCS parameters, demographics and ultrasonography (US) findings. METHODS: A total of 55 volunteers participated in this study. We hypothesized that ‘lateral edge of spiral groove (A)’ was the optimal stimulation site, and the ‘largest cross-sectional area (CSA) of extensor indicis proprius (EIP) muscle (B)’ was the optimal recording site. The surface distance between ‘A’ and the lateral epicondyle of the humerus divided by upper arm length, was named the spiral groove ratio. The surface distance between ‘B’ and the ulnar styloid process divided by forearm length, was named the EIP ratio. Using US, we identified these sites, and further conducted RmNCS. RESULTS: Data was collected from 100 arms of the 55 volunteers. Mean amplitude and latency were 5.7±1.1 mV and 5.7±0.5 ms, respectively, at the spiral groove, and velocity between elbow and spiral groove was 73.7±7.0 m/s. RmNCS parameters correlated significantly with height, weight, arm length, and CSA of the EIP muscle. Spiral groove ratio and EIP ratio were 0.338±0.03 and 0.201±0.03, respectively; both values were almost the same, regardless of age, sex and handedness. CONCLUSION: We established a reference value and standardized method of RmNCS using US. Optimal RmNCS can be conducted by placing the recording electrode 20% (about one-fifth) of forearm length from the ulnar styloid process, and stimulating at 34% (about one-third) of the humeral length from the lateral epicondyle.
