Objective: This study aimed to identify the frequency of use of in-flight medical equipment and the status of medications loaded with common symptoms. Methods: We conducted a survey of airlines to identify onboard medication and medical equipment from July 1 to 31, 2020. Results: A total of seven airlines participated in this study (two full service and five low cost carriers). The most commonly reported frequencies of using first aid kit and emergency medical kit were less than five cases per month (57.1% and 71.4%, respectively). Most airlines were equipped with medications for burn (85.7%), abdominal pain (100%) and fever (100%), which are frequently reported in-flight medical incidents. However, only two airlines were equipped with medications for psychiatric symptoms commonly reported in-flight medical incidents. Conclusion Most airlines loaded medications for major in-flight symptoms. However, it is necessary to equip the additional medications for the burn and psychiatric symptoms.

Methods: A randomized crossover experimental design was used to determine the effects of this intervention. The research participants included 55 nurses (29 in group 1 and 26 in group 2) who worked as nurses in the emergency room at a tertiary general hospital in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. Aroma inhalation was conducted on the night shift. Sleep quality, professional QoL, and near-misses in medication were measured before and after inhalation of the aroma. Data was analyzed using the independent t-test, the chi-square test, and a linear mixed-effects model. Results: The aroma treatment group had significantly better sleep quality than the non-treatment group (p < .010), and the sleep time on the third day of aroma treatment was longer than that of the non-treatment group (p = .008). However, there were no signs of improvement in professional QoL or near-misses in medication errors in response to aroma treatment. Conclusion Aroma inhalation effectively improved sleep quality and increased sleep duration in emergency room nurses. Therefore, aroma inhalation is suggested as an intervention to improve the sleep quality of emergency room nurses who work night shifts. Follow-up studies are needed to build a more robust evidence base to inform strategies for improving nurses' professional QoL and patient safety during medication management.

PURPOSE: We aim to assess the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (Bayley-III), Adaptive Behavior (AB) and Social-Emotional (SE) scales at 18 to 24 months of corrected age (CA) to examine their associations with school-age cognitive and behavioral outcomes in children born preterm. METHODS: Eighty-eight infants born with a very low birth weight ( < 1,500 g) or a gestational age of less than 32 weeks who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit from 2008 to 2009 were included. Of the 88 children who completed school-age tests at 6 to 8 years of age, 37 were assessed using the Bayley-III, including the AB and SE scales, at 18 to 24 months of CA. Correlation, cross-tabulation, and receiver operating characteristic analyses were performed to assess the longitudinal associations. RESULTS: A significant association was observed between communication scores on the Bayley-III AB scale at 18 to 24 months of CA and the Korean version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (K-WISC) full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) at school age (r=0.531). The total behavior problem scores of the Korean version of the Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) at school age were significantly negatively related to the Bayley-III SE and AB scales but not to the cognitive, language, or motor scales. CONCLUSION: Our findings encourage AB and SE assessments during the toddler stage and have important implications for the early identification of children in need of intervention and the establishment of guidelines for follow-up with high-risk infants.

OBJECTIVES: This study presents the current status of nursing informatics education, the content covered in nursing informatics courses, the faculty efficacy, and the barriers to and additional supports for teaching nursing informatics in Korea. METHODS: A set of questionnaires consisting of an 18-item questionnaire for nursing informatics education, a 6-item questionnaire for faculty efficacy, and 2 open-ended questions for barriers and additional supports were sent to 204 nursing schools via email and the postal service. Nursing schools offering nursing informatics were further asked to send their syllabuses. The subjects taught were analyzed using nursing informatics competency categories and other responses were tailed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: A total of 72 schools (35.3%) responded to the survey, of which 38 reported that they offered nursing informatics courses in their undergraduate nursing programs. Nursing informatics courses at 11 schools were taught by a professor with a degree majoring in nursing informatics. Computer technology was the most frequently taught subject (27 schools), followed by information systems used for practice (25 schools). The faculty efficacy was 3.76 ± 0.86 (out of 5). The most frequently reported barrier to teaching nursing informatics (n = 9) was lack of awareness of the importance of nursing informatics. Training and educational opportunities was the most requested additional support. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing informatics education has increased during the last decade in Korea. However, the proportions of faculty with degrees in nursing informatics and number of schools offering nursing informatics courses have not increased much. Thus, a greater focus is needed on training faculty and developing the courses.

Background: In Korea, the birth rate is declining at an alarming pace. This study aimed to investigate the changes and trends in the population count, number of births, and birth rate in Korea, in the past and future. Methods: Data regarding the total number of births, crude birth rate, and total fertility rate were collected from the “Statistics Korea Census” of the national statistical portal, census report, and Statistics Korea’s “2020 Population Trend Survey for 1981–2020, provisional results of birth and death statistics.” We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 2019 Family Database for the TFR. To develop a better understanding of the data in this study, we classified it according to the modern history of Korea. Results: The changes and trends in the number of births and fertility rate in Korea, after liberation, were due to the birth control policy that restricted births. In Korea’s low fertility society, which began in the mid-2000s, the fertility rate dropped to below 0.84 in 2020, despite policies to improve the quality of the population. The death toll has reached 300,000, entering an era of population decline. Conclusion As we enter the era of population decline, we are in a direction that will cause various socioeconomic problems, from demographic problems to future population decline.

Background: Titanium dioxide films exhibit good biocompatibility and may be effective as drug-binding matrices for drug-eluting stents. We conducted a mid-term evaluation of a novel polymer-free everolimus-eluting stent using nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide film deposition (TIGEREVOLUTION® ) in comparison with a commercial durable polymer everolimus-eluting stent (XIENCE Alpine® ) in a porcine coronary restenosis model. Methods: Twenty-eight coronary arteries from 14 mini-pigs were randomly allocated to TIGEREVOLUTION® stent and XIENCE Alpine® stent groups. The stents were implanted in the coronary artery at a 1.1–1.2:1 stent-to-artery ratio. Eleven stented coronary arteries in each group were finally analyzed using coronary angiography, optical coherence tomography, and histopathologic evaluation 6 months after stenting. Results: Quantitative coronary analysis showed no significant differences in the preprocedural, post-procedural, and 6-month lumen diameters between the groups. In the volumetric analysis of optical coherence tomography at 6 months, no significant differences were observed in stent volume, lumen volume, and percent area stenosis between the groups. There were no significant differences in injury score, inflammation score, or fibrin score between the groups, although the fibrin score was zero in the TIGEREVOLUTION® stent group (0 vs. 0.07 ± 0.11, P = 0.180). Conclusion Preclinical evaluation, including optical coherence tomographic findings 6 months after stenting, demonstrated that the TIGEREVOLUTION® stent exhibited efficacy and safety comparable with the XIENCE Alpine® stent, supporting the need for further clinical studies on the TIGEREVOLUTION® stent.
