1.ULTRASTRUCTURAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN CULTURED PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT CELLS AND TITANIUM.
Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 1997;23(4):668-672
A particular problem associated with osseointegrated implants is the fact that the implants lack a periodontal ligament. Thereby, marginal inflammation around an implant may cause more serious bone loss than does marginal inflammation around teeth with a periodontal ligament. In addition, osseointegrated implants are ankylosed and do not haute the same mobility as natural teeth with a periodontal ligament. Implants with a periodontal ligament would eliminate these problems. In order to explore the possibility of producing a periodontal ligament around titanium dental implants, a study of the attachment of cultured periodontal ligament cells to titanium was carried out. Periodontal ligament cells obtained from premolar teeth of individuals undergoing tooth extraction for orthodontic reasons were cultured on titanium-coated epon blocks. Sections of the blocks were cut perpendicular to the surface of the cell layer. Transmission electron microscopy of the periodntal ligament cells/titanium interface showed that there was no evidence of attachment at the cultured periodontal ligament cells titanium interface. The microfilaments, commonly located adjacent to the titanium surface, run mostly parallel to the titanium surface. The study showed that cultured periodontal ligament cells did not create an attachment structure on a titanium surface similar to that of natural teeth.

BACKGROUND: Passive smoking is an important worldwide public health issue. In many Korean studies, parental smoking has been reported to be associated with reduced pulmonary function in children. But few studies have evaluated the effects of passive smoking on pulmonary function in adults. Therefore, we looked into this association in the study. METHODS: Participants in the study included non-smoking, healthy men (n=46) and women (n=326) from rural Korea enrolled from June to December 2006. Exposure to passive smoking was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire, and standardized pulmonary function tests were performed. RESULTS: There were significant reductions in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1, % of predicted) and forced mean expiratory flow rate 25-75% (%) among the men exposed to passive smoke compared with those not exposed (55.7 vs 75.8, P=0.010; 33.9 vs 58.6, P=0.029, respectively). There were significant reductions in FEV1 among men exposed at both workplace and home compared with men exposed only at either workplace or home (42.8 vs 49.3, 64.6; P=0.034). No significant difference in pulmonary function was found between women exposed to passive smoke compared those not exposed. There were, however, reductions in FEV1 and FEV1/forced vital capacity among the women exposed at workplace. Regression analysis showed that passive smoking negatively affected lung function, which were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, particularly at the workplace, adversely affects pulmonary function in adults.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1986;22(5):696-703
This paper contains the results of clinical and neuroradiologic studies in 9 cases of histopathologicallyverified intracranial cavernous hemangiomas. The most common clinical presentations were focal seizure andheadache which were accompained by focal neurologic deficits. Skull films revealed abnormality in 3 cases andcerbral angiography revealed an avascular area in 8 cases, but both were of little diagnostic significance. CTusually demonstrated a hyperdense, cystic and calcified lesion without significant mass effect, and mild degereeof tubular or ring like enhancement after contrast injection. The follow-up CT findings in 4 cases over a 6-monthperiod were compatible to repeated minute hemorrhage and resolution. The above clinical and CT findings and , ifpossible, repeated CT could suggest the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma and provide the proper management, including the avoidance of unnecessory radiation therapy and biopsy related complications.

BACKGROUND: For the evaluation of pulmonary nrtery branches after operation of right ventricular outflow obstructive disease, we reviewed the usefulness of both simple X-ray and lung perfusion scan with 99mTc-macroaggregated albumin compared with cardiac angiography. METHODS: From March, 1986 to July, 1993, at Seoul National University Children;s Hospital, we chose 23 cases who underwent both simple X-ray and cardiac angiography among the patients who had distinct difference between right and left pulmonary blood flow in lung perfusion scan after operation of right ventricular outflow obstructive disease. So we calculated the ratio of right and left pulmonary blood flow and Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Of the 23 cases, 17 cases were tetralogy of Fallot, 4 cases pulmonary atresia, 1 case double outlet right ventricle, and 1 case truncus arteriosus. The mean age at poeration was 27 months, and the mean postoperative follow-up period was for 68 months. The correlation coefficient between cardiac angiography and simple X-ray was 0.86(p<0.01), and that beteen cardiac angiography and lung perfusion scan was 0.80(p<0.01). CONCLUSION: The cardiac angiography has been known as the best diagnostic tool for the evaluation of pulmonary artery branches after operation of right ventricular outflow obstructive ddisease, but we proposed that the lung perfusion scan should be widely used because its results were similar with those of cardiac angiography.
