Objectives : Depression is a common psychiatric disorder in cancer patients. The Brief Edinburgh Depression Scale(BEDS), which is an abbreviated version of the Edinburgh Depression Scale, may serve as a useful tool in screening for the depression in patients with the medical illnesses. This report investigated the reliability and validity of the Korean Version of the BEDS(K-BEDS) for the depression in cancer patients. METHODS : One-hundred cancer patients were enrolled in this study. All subjects completed the K-BEDS, the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale(HADS), and the Karnofsky Performance Status Scale(KPSS). Reliability, validity and Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC) curve analysis measures were assessed. RESULTS : The K-BEDS showed good internal consistency(Cronbach alpha=0.77) and test-retest reliability(0.94, p<0.001). All item-total correlations were above 0.3. Also, it revealed moderate correlation with the depression subscale of the HADS(r=0.617), but no correlation with the KPSS. Exploratory factor analysis produced only one factor, accounting for 47.1% of the total variance. The most valid cutoff value to screen for depression was a total score of 5 on the K-BEDS, which showed sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 86.4% with a positive predictive value of 4.60 and a negative predictive value of 0.43. CONCLUSION : The present findings suggested that the K-BEDS would have good psychometric properties to screen for the depression in cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and degree on change in mammographic densities, and calcification in the breast tissue, during different types of hormone replacement therapy and to evaluate the factors that play a role on the breast cancer. METHOD: A retrospective review of 268 cases menopausal women for HRT group and 52 cases menopausal women for unmatched control group. Mammographic evaluations for the distribution of breast densities and calcification, new solid mass and cyst in four different type of HRT were performed each every year during 5 years. The significant increase of breast densities and calcifications and new formation of neoplasm were taken with breast sonogram. 10 cases were biopsied for the confirmation of maliganancy. RESULT: Compared with the conrol groups, the hormone user group have a significant increase in the breast densitiy for 5 years (p<0.05), and the addition of progesterone in HRT showed a significant increase in the breast densities during 5 years (p<0.05), but we cannot find the correlation for new formation of solid mass and cyst and HRT (p>0.05). Among 10 cases in suspicious malignancy, 9 cases were confirmed to the malignancy by biopsy. CONCLUSION: The results of this study revealed that not only progesterone combined HRT but also estrogen only HRT significantly increased mammographic density. There is no relationship on the calcification and HRT in this study. The annual checking of mammography is necessary to HRT.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBO) is defined as breathing 100% oxygen while in an enclosed system pressurized to greater than on atmosphere(sea level). This increased oxygen delivery furthers your body's ability to kill germs and to increase healing. HBO is a supplemental therapy to be used in addition to the current medical and surgical therapy you are receiving. HBO typically is used to complement treatments of medical problems such as bone infections, complication of radiotherapy, and certain chronic, non-healing wounds. On an emergency basis, the chamber also is used to treat problems such as carbon monoxide poisoning and the decompression sickness. We analysed stastically cases which are treated by hyperbaric oxygen therapy in point of oral and maxillofacial region on the Kangnam General Hospital for aid in comprehension and application of this therapy. Total 760 patients were treated at Gangnam Gneral Hospital from July 1996 to September 1999. They were classifed by region to Decompression sickness(DCS), Carbon monoxide poisoning(CO), General surgery(GS), Orthopedics(OS), Oral and Maxillofacial surgery(OMFS), others. Patients of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery were divided by diseses to Osteomyelitis, Osteoradionecrosis, Reconstruction, Bone graft, Difficult wounds, others. The results were as follows. 1. This institute conducts HBO therapy for DCS which takes up 62% and 10.5% for OMF region. 2. In OMF region, Osteomyelitis is 40%, Osteoradionecrosis is next, Bone graft, and Reconstruction is a row. 3. According to our precious study, HBO has been frequently conducted in OMF region compared to past, however, it is less actively conducted in this area for reserch than other conturies. Therefore, We need further application to the clinical use.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, called sarcoma botryoides, is the most common malignant tumor arising from in the infant vagina. This tumor is diagnosed before the age of 5 and highly malignant. We experienced a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising from vaginal wall in 5-year-old girl. Authors presented this case with a brief review of literature.

In August 2008, forty dogs out of 400 developed oral warts in a breeding farm in Korea. Canine oral papilloma infection is a common disease in dogs. However, there has been no report of an outbreak of canine oral papillomavirus (COPV) in a group of dogs or in dog breeding farms in Korea, and the genetic analysis of COPV in Korea has yet to be performed. This study diagnosed canine oral papilloma from the oral samples of these dogs based on histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. Polymerase chain reaction was applied to amplify the corresponding products using pre-existing primer sets for COPV and a universal human papillomavirus targeting L1 gene. Further genetic analysis of the major viral capsid gene L1 confirms the sequences of Korean COPV, which shows a close relationship to previously reported COPV. This study describes the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of canine oral papilloma in a group of breeding dogs in Korea and discloses the complete L1 gene sequences of Korean COPV.

Primary testicular tumors are the most common causes of cancer in male dogs. Overall, the majority of canine patients should be cured by testicular surgery. However, tumor markers are not well-known in veterinary medicine. We sought to determine using immunohistochemistry whether the combined human testicular tumor markers (placental alkaline phosphatase, OCT3/4, CD30, alpha-fetoprotein, inhibin-alpha, vimentin, c-KIT, and desmin) are expressed in canine seminomas and Sertoli cell tumors (SCTs). We examined 35 canine testicular tumors, 20 seminomas and 15 SCTs. c-KIT was expressed markedly in canine seminomas. Both inhibin-alpha and vimentin were expressed significantly in canine SCTs. The results of this study demonstrate differences and similarities between tumor marker expression of testicular tumors in dogs and humans. All the main markers in current routine use are discussed as well as potential useful markers for benign and malignant tumors, and tumor progression.

OBJECTIVES: Firefighters and rescue workers are likely to be exposed to a variety of traumatic events; as such, they are vulnerable to the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The psychometric properties of the Korean version of the PTSD Checklist (PCL), a widely used self-report screening tool for PTSD, were assessed in South Korean firefighters and rescue workers. METHODS: Data were collected via self-report questionnaires and semi-structured clinical interviews administered to 221 firefighters. Internal consistency, item-total correlation, one-week test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and divergent validity were examined. Content validity of the PCL was evaluated using factor analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to estimate the optimal cutoff point and area under the curve. RESULTS: The PCL demonstrated excellent internal consistency (alpha = 0.97), item-total correlation (r = 0.72-0.88), test-retest reliability (r = 0.95), and convergent and divergent validity. The total score of PCL was positively correlated with the number of traumatic events experienced (p < 0.001). Factor analysis revealed two theoretically congruent factors: re-experience/avoidance and numbing/hyperarousal. The optimal cutoff was 45 and the area under the ROC curve was 0.97. CONCLUSIONS: The Korean version of the PCL may be a useful PTSD screening instrument for firefighters and rescue workers, further maximizing opportunities for accurate PTSD diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal expansion of trinucleotide repeats in genes causing spinocerebellar ataxias such as SCA2, SCA3, SCA8, or SCA17 was reported in sporadic or familial Parkinson's disease. Genetic factors play an important role especially in early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). To investigate mutations of ATXN2, ATXN3, and TBP as a possible cause in Korean EOPD, we analyzed mutations in these genes. We also investgated the possibility that trinucleotide repeats numbers in these genes contribute to the development of EOPD. METHODS: Mutation analysis of ATXN2, ATXN3, and TBP was done in 153 EOPD defined as age-at-onset before 51. Distribution of CAG repeats numbers were compared between EOPD and age- and sex-matched controls. RESULTS: No patients with EOPD had CAG repeats numbers in ATXN2, ATXN3, and TBP in mutation range. There was no difference in the distribution of CAG repeats between EOPD and controls, although we found a trend that CAG repeats numbers in ATXN3 appear larger in EOPD than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Mutations of genes causing SCA2, SCA3, or SCA17 may not be a common genetic cause in Korean EOPD.
