PURPOSE: Relaxation of the penile cavernosum smooth muscle is a critical event in erection. Artemisia iwaymogi(AI) is a perennial herb growing in Korea. The aerial parts have been used in folk medicine. Bioassay-guided fractionation of an H2O extract of AI has furnished an inhibitory substance (PCLS-2). We investigated compound extracted in the rabbit corporal cavernosum smooth muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bioassay-guided fractionation of an H2O extract was used. A strip of rabbit corpus cavernosum was mounted in an organ chamber to measure the isometric tension. PCLS-2 compound induced relaxations were evaluated by in vitro study using muscarinic receptor blocker atropine (ATR), cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor indomethacin, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) ihibitor Nitro-L Arginine-Methyl Ester (NAME), guanylate cyclase inhibitor 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin 1-one (ODQ), intrinsic neurotransmission inhibitor tetrodotoxin (TTX), or/and potassium channel blockers. RESULTS: PCLS-2 showed relaxation in a dose-dependent manner. Atropine, Indomethacin, NAME, ODQ, TTX, glibenclamide, tetraethylammonium, 4-aminopyridine, charybdotoxin, or apamin did not inhibit the relaxation induced by PCLS-2 compound. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggest that the PCL-2 compound has effect of relaxation of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle and the relaxation was not involved muscarinic receptor, nitric oxide, prostaglandin, potassium channels and intrinsic neurotransmission. Other mechanisms may by involved in the PCLS-2 induced relaxation in the rabbit corpus cavernosum smooth muscle.

Purpose: This study compared the subjective and objective sleep quality between subjects with and without thoracic hyper-kyphosis. Methods: Forty participants were divided into a hyper-kyphosis (n = 17) and normal group (n = 17) by thoracic spinal angle measurement. The subjective sleep quality was measured using PSQI, a self-report, and objective sleep quality was measured using an actigraphy that measures time according to sleep patterns. Results: The PSQI scores of subjects with thoracic hyper-kyphosis were significantly higher than those with normal thoracic curvature (p = 0.013). The total sleep time and real sleep time were less in subjects with hyper-kyphosis than in normal subjects (p = 0.006;p = 0.029). The light sleep time was less in subjects with excessive spondylolisthesis than in normal subjects (p = 0.010). Light sleep time was less in those with hyper-kyphosis, but deep sleep time was similar to the subjects with a normal thoracic curvature (p = 0.003;p = 0.140). Conclusion Subjects with thoracic hyper-kyphosis had a decrease in subjective sleep quality, such as sleep discomfort, and objective sleep quality, such as a decrease in sleep time compared to normal subjects.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most high-risk cancers; however, it has been suggested that estrogen signaling in CRC could have a protective effect. Therefore, we focused on the function of the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) among the estrogen receptors in CRC. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of resveratrol via GPER in CRC (RKO and WiDr) cells, CRC cell-derived xenograft models, and organoids (30T and 33T). Resveratrol significantly suppressed cell viability and proliferation in highly GPER-expressing RKO cells compared to that in low GPER-expressing WiDr cells. In xenograft models, resveratrol also delayed tumor growth and exhibited a high survival rate depending on GPER expression in RKO-derived tumors.Furthermore, resveratrol significantly inhibited the viability of organoids with high GPER expression. Additionally, the anticancer effect of resveratrol on CRC showed that resveratrol rapidly responded to GPER, while increasing the expression of p-ERK and Bax and cleaving PARP proteins.

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing worldwide. As cancer screening has become more widespread, the rate of early breast cancer detection has increased and treatment methods have changed. Partial mastectomy is performed more often than total mastectomy for the surgical treatment of early breast cancer, and sentinel lymph node biopsy plays an important role. A high level of accuracy is necessary for the intraoperative examination of surgical margins and sentinel lymph nodes to identify malignancies. Therefore, several examination techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, that replace or supplement the currently used frozen-section methods are being studied. Raman spectroscopy has the ability to diagnose cancer in normal tissue by providing in real time a chemical fingerprint that can be used to differentiate between cells and tissues. Numerous studies have investigated the utilization of Raman spectroscopy to identify cancer in the margins of resected tissues and sentinel lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery, showing the potential of this technique for clinical applications. This article introduces and reviews the research on Raman spectroscopy for breast cancer surgery.

Purpose: To compare the macular and peripapillary vascular parameters between the primary angle closure suspect (PACS) eyes and normal control eyes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: In this retrospective study, 42 PACS subjects and 38 normal individuals are included. Vessel density (VD) and perfusion density (PD) of the macular area and peripapillary area, and fovea avascular zone parameter were analyzed using OCTA and compared between two groups after adjustment for the axial length. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in sex ratio, age, refractive errors and intraocular pressures between both groups. In the peripapillary area, inferior VD and PD in the outer zone were significantly lower in the PACS eyes, while the retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses were similar between groups (p = 0.032, 0.026). In the macular superficial capillary plexus, inferior VD and PD in the inner zone, inferior VD and PD, nasal VD and PD in the outer zone were significantly lower in the PACS eyes, whereas ganglion cell inner plexiform layer thickness were similar between both groups (all p < 0.005). Conclusions The VDs and PDs of retinal capillaries in PACS eyes, which have no glaucomatous changes in the retinal nerve fiber layer and optic nerve disc, were significantly lower compared to normal eyes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the survival of periodontally hopeless teeth that were intentionally extracted and replanted after a delay and to compare the radiographic characteristics of the survival group with those of the failure group. METHODS: The clinical and radiographic data from patients who underwent delayed intentional replantation between March 2000 and July 2010 were reviewed. Twenty-seven periodontally hopeless teeth were extracted and preserved in medium supplemented with antibiotics for 10-14 days. The teeth were then repositioned in the partially healed extraction socket and followed for 3 to 21 months. The radiographic parameters were analyzed using a paired t test and the cumulative survival rate was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: Seven replanted teeth failed and the overall cumulative survival rate was 66.4%. In the survival group, the amount of bone loss was reduced from 68.45% to 34.66% three months after replantation. There was radiologic and clinical evidence of ankylosis with 5 teeth. However, no root resorption was found throughout the follow-up period. In the failure group, bone formation occurred from the bottom of the socket. However, a remarkable radiolucent line along the root of a replanted tooth existed. The line lengthened and thickened as time passed. Finally, in each case of failure, the tooth was extracted due to signs of inflammation and increased mobility. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed intentional replantation has many advantages compared to immediate intentional replantation and could serve as an alternative treatment for periodontally involved hopeless teeth. However, techniques for maintaining the vitality of periodontal structures on the tooth surface should be developed for improved and predictable results.

We report a 13-year-old girl with multiple angiokeratomas on lower extremity. Her skin lesions were asymptomatic but became larger and darker and bled intermittently with subtle trauma. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of angiokeratoma. We emphasize the importance of this lesion in the differential diagnosis of pigmented nevus or malignant melanoma.

We report a 37-year-old man who had a cutaneous marker of tuberous sclerosis with angiofibromas, periungal fibromas and who also showed bilateral verrucous hemangiomas on buttock. It is not known whether there is association between verrucous hemangioma and tuberous sclerosis, but there are some evidence suggest a more than chance association. We describe a case of bilateral verrucous hemangiomas combined with tuberous sclerosis.
