BACKGROUND: DNA content analysis of human solid tumor is now widely performed by flow cytometric study. One of the most interesting and potentially observation in this field is that proliferative activity(S-Phase fraction of cell cycle) may profoundly affect the prognosis. METHOD: S-Phase fraction(SPF) have been measured by flow cytometric method using tumor cells isolated from paraffin embedded tissue. To evaluate the prognostic significance, SPF of small lung cancer cell was assessed in 42 patients who died after receiving anticancer chemotherapy. RESULTS: 1) Mean survival time of patients with small cell lung cancer was 190(± 156) days, Survival time were shortened, when TNM stage and PS scale were advanced. 2) Mean value of SPF of patients with small cell lung cancer was 27.4(±8.5)%. SPF had nothing to do with advance of TNM stage and PS scale. 3) In each identical TNM stage, there were not statistic significance between SPF and survival times. 4) There was a tendency like that higher SPF, better chemotherapeutic CONCLUSION: We could not find statistic significance between SPF and survival times, but SPF was a good predictive factor for chemotherapeutic response.

Incomplete fixation of pancreas, which may be associated with a wide mobility of root of SMA, result in chronic midgut volvulus. Movable pancreas is an uncommon form of incomplete intestnal fixation and rotation. Herein, we present a caae of movable pancreas. A patient was a 32-year-old male with the complaint of colicky intermittent abdomnal pain. The abdominal ultrasonography and CT showed a movable pancreas. The head of pancreas was located in the left of the abdominal aorta during the inspiratory time and left decubitus position. At surgery, pancreas was mobile and the root of mesentery was very weak and fibrotic. Duodenum and mesentery were fixed by 0.7 mm Dacron patch along the right peritoneal gutter and the retroperitoneum from ligament of Treitz to the ileocecal attachment. Duodenojejunostomy was performed for the prevention of SMA syndrome. The symptoms disappeared and recovery was prompt. Following the procedure, the patient remains asymptomatic until 10 months after operation

A case of lichen nitidus in 23 years old male was described. This is the first case report in Korea. The clinical and histopathological study revealed characteristic features of the disease. Authors reviewed therapeutic experience and reports of the literaturea.

Spontaneous perforation of bile duct in adults is very rare, with less than 30 cases described in the literature to date. We repoit a case of a 65-year-old man who presented with severe colicky abdominal pain and fever, just like symptoms of peritonitis. ERCP provided a preoperative noninvasive confirmation of the diagnosis of the rupture of right intrahepatic duct. The patient was performed T-tube choledochotomy and drainage of retroperitoneal bile collection. The etiolgy, diagnosis, and treatment of spontaneous perforation of bile duct is discussed.

Obstructive jaundice of the bile duct resulting from tumor-producing copious, thick mucin, causing ductal obstruction and dilatation, has been reported very rarely. Also, the benign bile duct neoplasm is extremely rare. We report a case of a mucin-secreting villous adenoma of common hepatic duct causing obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. The patient was a 72-year-old male and had a 3 yeared history of common hepatic mass unchanged remarkably in size. The abdominal ultrasonogram and computed tomography revealed well circumscribed, more than 2cm sized mass on the CHD and ductal dilatation. We were able to get an interesting cholangioram showing irregular, nodular, ill defined filling defect in the extrahepatic bile duct, different from US and CT findings, And it was just caused by thick, copious mucin from the tumar. This case was confirmed as mucin-secreting villous adenoma after surgery.

The method of ankle arthrodesis is variable but compression arthrodesis has been widely used because of better results than non-compression arthrodesis. Twenty-one cases of ankle arthrodesis were carried out at department of orthopaedic surgery of Korea Veterans Hospital from January 1980 to June 1986, and were analysed clinically. The results obtained were as follows; l. Among 11 cases of compression arthrodesis, Charnleys method was done in 8 cases and Monofixateur in 3 cases. 2. Among 10 cases of non-compression arthrodesis, Chuinard-Peterson method was done in 7 cases and anterior 'sliding graft in 3 cases. 3. The average duration of immobilization after ankle arthrodesis was 11.7 weeks, and average 4.2 weeks were less needed in the compression arthrodesis than non-compression arthrodesis. 4. The postoperative complications were developed in 8 cases (38%): wound infection in 4 cases,skin necrosis in 3 cases and incisional neuroma in 1 case. 5. Bony union was obtained in 20 cases(95.2%) out of 21 cases at average 15.7 weeks, and in the non-compression arthrodesis and in the cnmpression arthrodesis, respectively, 90% at 17.7 weeks and 100% at 13.9 weeks.

With advancement of endoscopical instruments and technique, gallstone diseases can be managed with laparoscopic cholecystectomy which has rapidly and radically changed the surgical treatment of gallstone diseases. The ideas of laparoscopic surgery was introduced by Germany gynecologist Semm, in 1967 and was first performed by French surgeon Mouret, Dubois in 1987. Although many reports of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy were excellent, many surgeons want to know the surgical results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy are enough good to perform comparing with the conventional cholecystectomy, especially in early complications and late complications. A 19 month old girl with trisomy 18 is described. She showed loose folds of skin about the neck, a prominent occiput, a simian crease on both palms, epicanthal folds, acrocephaly, micrognathia, and unusual dermatologic features including total alopecia and no finger prints on either hands. Because of the simian crease on both palms, dermatoglyphics of both hands and total alopecia, a skin biopsy from the scalp and a chromosomal study were established at age 19-months, and an absence of hair follicles was observed, while peripheral blood lymphocytes demonstrated 47, XX, 4-18. To our knowledge, this would be the first recorded report on the dermatoglyphic pattern of Edwards syndrome in a Korean journal of dermatology.
