1.Effects of Resilience on Work Engagement and Burnout of Clinical Nurses.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting work engagement and burnout among clinical nurses according to resilience. METHODS: The study design was a descriptive survey and questionnaires were collected from 182 clinical nurses who worked in hospitals in "J" province. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regressions. RESULTS: The mean score of resilience, work engagement, burnout were 3.47+/-0.38, 4.29+/-0.98, 2.25+/-0.82 respectively. Resilience had 26.3% of the influence on work engagement and 50.5% of the influence on burnout. Sub-variables of causal analysis and empathy of resilience were statistically useful as factors influencing burnout. CONCLUSION: Resilience has been identified as a factor affecting work engagement and burnout. Therefore, nursing departments and nurse managers should strive to develop programs for the promotion of resilience.

2.Melorheostosis Associated with Synovial Chondromatosis

Melorheostosis is a rare entity while causes pain and stiffness in a limb and has an unknown etiology. It is characterized by roentgenographic appearance of melting wax dripping down one side of a candle along the major axis of long bone. The present case represents a melorheostosis of the left tibia accompanied by synovial chondromatosis in the left knee. Good result was obtained by arthrotomy of the left knee and removal of the bony masses in the joint.

3.Giant Extra-Capsular Synovial Chondroma of the knee joint: A Case Report

Extra-capsular synovial chondroma is a rare condition in which metaplastic cartilaginous mass is formed by the cartilage nodule within the synovial connective tissue break through the joint capsule and continue to proliferate. The authors have experienced a case of giant extracapsular synovial chondroma, affecting the knee joint of 54 years old woman. A case of giant extra-capsular synovial chondroma is reported with brief review of literature.

4.The Treatment of Acromioclavicular Separation

There are many procedures for treatment of injuries of acromioclavicular separation but there are still con- roversies concerning the best management of these injuries. With this in mind, we treated surgically 22 cases of acromioclavicular separation of which 3 cases were old type 2 and 19 cases were type 3 in the department of orthopaedic surgery, Eul Ji General Hospital from March 1977 to darch 1982. The results were as follows: l. Of 22 cases, 21 cases (95.5%) were male with peak incidence in the 3rd and 5th decades (90.9%). 2. The most common causes of the injuries were traffic accidents (63.6%) and followed by falling from height (22.7%). 3. The diagnosis in type 2 and type 3 injuries is based on the clavicular displacement and instability at the acromioclavicular joint. 4. Operative treatment consists of Weaver and Dunn method (54.5%), modified Phemister method (18.2%), Neviaser method (13.0%), Stewart method (9.1%) and modified Henry method (4.5%). 5. The operative procedure in old type 2 and typc 3 injuries is good treatment of acromioclavicular separation.

10.Mechanism of Hypercallus Formation in Patients with Concomitant Fracture and Head injury.

We built the hypothesis that the hypertrophic callus formation is mediated by beta-endorphin that stimulates secretion of GH and increase circulation growth factor activity in head injury patient. We classified 4 groups such as 5 normal person(control), group I;5 patients with only fracture, group II;5 patients with fracture and head injury, group III; 5 patients with only head injury, group IV. We obtained the samples of serum from each group at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks after trauma and assessed the serum level of GH, GHRH, somatostatin. The serum level of GH was statisticallyu higher in group III, IV than group I, II. There was not significant difference in serum level of GHRH. The serum level of somatostatin was higher in group II, III, IV than group I, but there was no statistical significance in each group. GH has a important role in hypertrophic callus formation in severe head injury patients, but there was no evidence that the mechanism is mediated by beta-EndorphinGHRH & somatostatin-GH-GF-1, beta-FGF axis. There may be a another mechanism in increasing GH that was stimulated by beta-endorphin in thalamus and lateral ventricle, and it should be necessary for further evaluation of it.
