Human colon epithelial cells secrete an array of proinflammatory cytokines that includes IL-8, MCP-1, GM-CSF, TNF alpha and IL-6. This response may serve to attract neutrophils and macrophags to the site of infection. In addition to IL-8 and MCP-1, the chemokine family contains other members, which, alone or in combination, can recruit and/or activate inflammatory and lymphoid cells. In this study, we asked whether colon epithelial cells express a broader array of chemokines than previously described. The colon epithelial cell line, Caco-2, was stimulated for 3h with IL-1 alpha, or was infected with Salmonella dublin. RNA was extracted and chemokine mRNA levels were determined by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR using internal RNA standards. Ex pression of GRO alpha, GRO beta, GRO gamma and IP-10 increased by bacterial infection or IL-l alpha stimulation. These data strongly support the notion that epithelal cells are an important and integral component of the host's natural immune system.

Condyloma acuminatum is one of the four types of common human venereal diseases that have viral etiology. Also known as a "moist wart", condyloma acuminatum is most often seen on the mucosal surface of the anogenital area. However, occurrences on the mucosal surface of head and neck regions are quite rare. We have recently encountered a case of condyloma acuminatum on the mucosal surface of pharynx, verified by histologic examination. We report a case of condyloma acuminatum on the mucosal surface of pharynx with a review of related literatures.

PURPOSE: Chemokines are potent regulators of the host inflammatory or immune responses. Mucosal synthesis of chemokines may be important in the pathogenesis of mucosal inflammation in ulcerative colitis (UC). We performed this study to investigate the expression of C-X-C chemokine genes in UC. METHODS: Mucosal tissues were obtained from six normal controls and six UC patients by endoscopic biopsies. In patients with UC, mucosal tissues were separately obtained from both involved and uninvolved regions. RNA was extracted and mRNA levels of five C-X-C chemokines were determined by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR using internal RNA standards. RESULTS: Mucosal mRNA levels of all chemokines tested increased in the involved region of UC compared with the uninvolved region of UC or normal controls. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that mucosal expression of C-X-C chemokines contributes to the pathogenesis of UC

To provide high-quality training to residents in a rapidly changing medical environment, it is very important to improve the annual training curriculum centered on competency and ensure that training hospitals maintain an environment suitable for training. The Korean Society of Radiology (KSR) has been steadily improving the training system and has suggested the improvement of the training system by strengthening the competency-based evaluation and faculty development. Currently, KSR was selected for the second annual training curriculum systematization construction project in July 2021, and developed entrustable professional activities, core competencies, and assessment guidelines required by the construction project. Therefore, the development process and assessment guidelines will be introduced to residents and the faculty.

Fungal peritonitis is one of the leading causes of patient dropout from continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) therapy. Although the most causative agents of peritonitis associated with CAPD are bacteria, fungi are implicated in up to 10% of cases. The most common organism of fungal peritonitis is Candida specises, but Trichosporon beigelii was reported as a rare causative agent of fungal peritonitis. We experienced a case of CAPD peritonitis by Trichosporon beigelii, which was treated with CAPD catheter removal, and antifungal agents with amphotericin B and fluconazole. Thus, we report our experience of CAPD peritonitis caused by Trichosporon beigelii and review of the literature.

The incidence of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma as primary lung tumor is very rare. Most of the primary leiomyosarcomas originate in the hilar region in relation to the main bronchus or pulmonary vessels and only a few originate more peripherally. This rare tumor can mimic bronchial carcinoma and present with local or systemic symptoms, or it may be discovered as an incidental finding on a routine chest X-ray. We report with review of literature, a case of incidental primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma which originated peripherally. Huge mass was found on the left lung of a 61-year-old man on the chest X-ray peripherally. He underwent the surgical resection of the left pneumonectomy and the postoperative course was uneventful.

If manometric profiles of sphincter of Oddi(SO) measured from the pancreatic duct and the bild duct are essentially equal, then measurement of manometric profiles from only one duct would be adequate in evaluating SO dysfunction. We report a series of 9 patients whom we evaluate with SO manometry. Cannulation of both the biliary sphincter segment and pancreatic sphincter segment was archived consecutively in one session and we compared the manometric parameters of choledochal sphincter from those of pancreatic sphincter. 1) In 7 out of 9 patients(78%), normal manometric finding of SO were seen in both choledochal and pancreatic sphincters. However, in 2 out of 9 cases(22%) abnormal manometric findings were noted in only one sphincter segment. Elevation of basal pressure(n = l) and increased retrograde propagation(n = 1) were found in the pancreatic sphincter segment alone. 2) Tbe mean intraductal pressure in the pancreatic duct was significantly greater(12.6+/- 5.8mmHg) than that of common bile duct(3.8+/- 3.3mmHg)(p<0.01). However, basal pressure, amplitude, frequency and propagation sequence in the phasic contraction of SO were not different significantly between choledochal and pancreatic sphincter segment. In conclusion, SO manometry of both the pancreatic and bile duct is needed if complete manometric information is desired. Selective cannulation of common bile duct and pancreatic duct during SO manometry is necessary in order to diagnose segmental 50 dysfunction.

PURPOSE: To investigate brain lesions and their locations in patients with central vertigo, as seen on MRimaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed MR images of 85 patients with central type vertigodiagnosed on the basis of clinical symptoms and vestibular function test (VFT), and analyzed lesions and theirlocations. Those located along the known central vestibular pathway were included in our study. RESULTS: In 29 of85 patients (34%), lesions considered to be associated with central vertigo were detected on MR imaging. Theseincluded infarction (18 patients), hemorrhage (5), tumor (2), cavernous angioma(1), cerebellopontine anglecyst(1), tuberous sclerosis(1) and olivopontocerebellar atrophy(1) ; they were located in the parietal lobe(6patients), the lateral medulla(5), the pons(5), the middle cerebellar peduncle(4), the corona radiata(3), and thecerebellar vermis(3). Thirty-eight cases showed high signal intensity lesions in deep cerebral matter, the basalganglia, and pons but these were considered to be unrelated to central vertigo. CONCLUSIONS: MR imaging could bea useful tool for the evaluation of patients with central vertigo.
