1.Development of Desmoid and Mesenteric Fibromas following Total Colectomy for Adenomatous Polyposis Coli in Gardner's syndrome.
Korean Journal of Pathology 1989;23(4):465-469
We describe a case of polyposis coli, which was followed by development of desmoid in the rectus adbominis muscle and fibromas in the mesentery during an interval of two years. This case supports the hypothesis that, in Garder's syndrome, the traumatic injury by colectomy triggers an unusual fibrous proliferation in the peritoneal cavity and incision site under the possible genetic basis.

Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1997;32(6):667-674
The T cell responses to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were analyzed in acute hepatitis patients, chronic active hepatitis (CAH) patients and asymptomatic carriers. Neither proliferative responses nor substantial cytokine production of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in response to HBsAg was detected. For further studies, HBsAg- reactive T cell lines were prepared from PBMC of the hepatitis patients and asymptomatic carriers. No proliferative response of the T cell lines was observed. Interestingly, however, T cell lines obtained from acute hepatitis patients were found to produce IFN-r, but not IL- 4, in response to HBsAg stimulation, whereas T cell lines obtained from CAH patients and carriers were not. Results of this study suggest that HBsAg-reactive T cells producing Thl type cytokines may play an important role in the viral clearance during acute infections, while defects in those T cells may be responsible for the viral persistency.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2002;40(4):199-203
We report two human cases of tick bite. A 63-year-old male had a pruritic pea-sized brownish nodule on the left popliteal area. Another 41-year-old male had an asymptomatic bean-sized black nodule in the pubic area. The ticks were identified as Ixodes nipponensis, which are the 18th and the 19th cases in Korea.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1988;26(4):255-262
An epidemiological study on brugian filariasis was carried out in endemic areas including Cheju Island in Korea, with a brief review of literatures. The results showed that the incidence among residents has remarkably decreased in Cheju Island, which was the main endemic area. Reviewing available informations on the prevalence of filariasis reported in recent years and also judging from the present socio-economic conditions which enable people to practice personal protection against mosquitos, it can be said with confidence that filariasis has almost disappeared from Cheju Island and inland areas. The disease is considered to remain at a low level of endemicity in Hugsan Islands. Certainly mass diethylcarbamazine (DEC) treatment carried out in Cheju Island in the 1960s and 1970s and remarkable economic growth followed by improved living standard and altered life-style of inhabitants could all have combined effects on the disappearance of this mosquito-borne diseae in this island. If the present trends go on, the possibility of resurgence of filariasis in Cheju Island is hardly postulated.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) phenotype plays an important role in the pathogenesis of AIDS. The presence of syncytium-inducing (SI) HIV-1 isolates in infected persons is associated with a rapid decline of CD4+T cells (CD4+), rapid disease progression, and reduced survival time after AIDS diagnosis. We have reported the effects of Korean red ginseng (KRG) on HIV-1 infected patients. To investigate whether KRG affects HIV-1 at gene level and there is a correlation between genotype and decline of CD4+, the C2-V3 region of env gene from 65 HIV-1 isolates were cloned and sequenced. Distributions of subtype were subtype B 57 (88%), subtype A 4 (6%), subtype C 2 (3%), subtype G 1 (2%), and subtype H 1 (2%). The prevalences of SI according to the number of CD4+ are as follows; 40% (6/15) in CD4+ <100/ ul, 14% (1/7) in 100-200/ul, and 2% (1/43) in >200/ul. Seventy-five percent (6/8) of SI were detected in rapid progressor with the decline of CD4+ over 60/ul per year. The correlation between SI genotype and the detection of immune complex dissociated (ICD) p24 antigen was significant (p<0.001). In the 40 patients followed-up over 60 months by CD4+, there was significant correlation between annual decrease of CD4+ and duration of KRG intake (R=-0.380, p<0.01), whereas no correlation between CD4+ and zidovudine (ZDV) was observed. The intrapatient variation of amino acid level showed significant inverse correlation with the months of KRG intake (R=-0.47, p<0.01). These results suggest that the determination of genotype by C2- V3 sequencing may be used for the evaluation of prognosis of AIDS patient, and long-term intake of KRG may prevent or delay the progression from NSI to SI.
