1.Plasma Carotenoid Levels in Healthy men and Acute Cardiovascular Disease Patients in Taegu.

Plasma carotenoid levels were compared among 64 healthy male subjects (control) and 38 patients of ischemic heart disease(IHD) and 20 ones of cerebral infarction(CI) all of whom were over 50years of age. Another 98 healthy male subjects aged 23 to 58 were selected to compare their plasma carotenoid levels by age groups, Levels of lutein, zeaxanthin and crpytoxanthin were lower in IHD(34+/-2, 13+/-1 and 62+/-7 microgram/dl)and CI(36+/-3, 12+/-2 and 41+/-6 microgram/dl)patient groups than in control group (84+/-5, 16+/-2 and 69+/-3 microgram/dl) while those of lycopene, alpha-and beta-carotene varied little among the three groups. The sum of the six carotenoid levels were levels were, therefore,highest(205+/-14 microgram/dl) in the control group followed by IHD(155+/-15 microgram/dl) and CI(128+/-17 microgram/dl) patient groups, Among the 98 healthy male subject for the age group study, levels of the three major carotenoids increased with age from the twenties to the fifities ; lutein, from 64+/-6 to 89+/-8 microgram/dl, cryptoxanthin, 57+/-8 to 73+/-4 microgram/dl and beta-carotene were more significantly correlated(r=0.30 to 0.61, p<0.01), whereas levels of lycopene and alpha-caroteme were significantly(r=0.21 - 0.23, p<0.05) correlated.

2.Clinical and histopathological studies on ovarian tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To know the clinical and histopathologic profiles of ovarian tumors. METHODS: 822 women undergone operations for their ovarian tumors were enrolled in this study from July of 1996 to June of 2004 at Inha University Hospital in S. Korea. Incidence, age, laterality and size were analyzed according to their histopathologic results. RESULTS: Among 822 women, there were 2.1% of non-neoplastic ovarian cysts, 81.0% of benign tumors, 4.4% of borderline tumors, and 12.5% of malignant tumors. Among benign tumors, 48.2 were cystic teratomas, 22.5% were mucinous, and 19.4% were serous tumors. Among borderline tumors, 52.8% were mucinous and 42.2% were serous. Among malignant tumors, 25.2% were serous and metastatic, respectively, and 18.4% were mucinous. The average and median age of non-neoplastic cysts were 39.1 +/- 12.7, 41 years old, those of benign tumors were 38.2 +/- 18.4, those of borderline tumors were 33.4 +/- 16.7, 28, and those of malignant tumors were 47.8 +/- 15.4, 49. The bilaterality of benign tumors was 10.7%, that of borderline were 16.7%, and that of malignant were 24.2%. The average and median diameter of non-neoplastic cysts were 3.2 +/- 1.4 cm, 3 cm, those of benign tumors were 8.1 +/- 4.3 cm, 7 cm, those of borderline tumors were 13.5 +/- 7.8 cm, 12 cm, and those of malignant tumors were 10.2 +/- 6.1 cm, 9.3 cm. CONCLUSION: We analyzed clinical and histopathologic data of 822 ovarian tumors.

3.Pulmonary Tuberculosis with Airspace Consolidation vs Mycoplasma Pneumonia in Adults: High-Resolution CT Findings.

PURPOSE: To analyse and compare high-resolution CT findings of pulmonary tuberculosis with consolidation and mycoplasma pneumonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with pulmonary tuberculosis [confirmed by sputum culture (n=9) and bronchoscopic biopsy (n=11)] and airspace consolidation on high-resolution CT and 17 patientswith mycoplasma pneumonia, confirmed by serologic test, were included in this study. High-resolution CT findings were analyzed in terms of ground-glass opacities, distribution of consolidation, type of nodules, cavities, interlobular septal thickening, bronchial dilatations, bronchial wall thickening and pleural effusion. RESULTS: In patients with tuberculsis, average age was 33.5 years (range, 20-67) ; in those with mycoplasma pneumonia it was 32.5 years (range, 17-74). Segmental and subsegmental distributions were most common in both diseases ; the preferred site of consolidation was different, however ; for tuberculosis it was the upper lobes (13 cases, 65% ; bilateral involvement, 7 cases) ; for mycoplasma pneumonia it was the lower lobes (11 cases, 64.7%). Non-segmental (diffuse and random) distribution of ground-glass opacities were seen in two patients(11.8%) with mycoplasma pneumonia. Centrilobular nodules, branching linear opacities and alveolar nodules were not different in both diseases, but there were nodules above 10mm in 14 cases of tuberculosis and in only one case of mycoplasma pneumonia. Tree-in-bud appearances were seen in five cases of tuberculosis. Cavities without air-fluid level were noted in ten cases of tuberculosis. Other interlobular septal thickening, bronchial wall thickening, bronchial dilatation and pleural effusion were not different in both diseases. CONCLUSION: There was considerable overlap between high resolution CT findings of tuberculosis with airspace consolidation and those of mycoplasma pneumonia. The location of consolidation, type of nodules, and the presence of tree-in-bud appearance and cavities help in the differentiation of the two diseases, however.

4.A Case of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Associated with Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMN) are defined by the presence of multiple primary cancers of multicentric origin and/or different tissues. The incidence of MPMN is less than 1% in Korea and recently seems to be increased due to early detection of cancer and prolonged survival of cancer patients. Previous investigations suggest that non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) may be associated with chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The pathogenesis of this association is thought to be due to chronic antigenic stimulation, the presence of HBsAg, and immunosuppressive therapy. We report a case of synchronous NHL and HCC in a 54-year-old man which is thought to be associated with hepatitis B virus infection. Pathological examination and immunohistochemical study of neck lymph node and liver mass biopsies showed diffuse large cell lymphoma and HCC, respectively. He was treated initially with EPOCH (etoposide, vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide and prednisolone) chemotherapy for NHL and transarterial chemoembolization with doxorubicin, mitomycin-c, lipiodol, and gelfoam for HCC.

5.Causes of Failure during the Management Process from Identification of Brain-Dead Potential Organ Donors to Actual Donation in Korea: a 5-Year Data Analysis (2012–2016).

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study analyzed the causes of failure in the management process from the identification of brain-dead potential organ donors to actual donation in Korea over the past 5 years. METHODS: Data of 8,120 potential brain deaths reported to the Korea Organ Donation Agency were used, including information received at the time of reporting, donation suitability evaluation performed by the coordinator after the report, and data obtained from interviews of hospital medical staff and the donor's family. RESULTS: From January 2012 to December 2016, the total number of brain-dead potential organ donors in Korea was 8,120, of which 2,348 (28.9%) underwent organ procurement surgery with designated recipients. While the number of transplant donors has increased over time, the ratio of transplant donors to medically suitable brain-dead donors has decreased. The common causes of donation failure included donation refusal (27.6%), non-brain death (15.5%), and incompatible donation (11.6%); 104 potential donors (7.8%) were unable to donate their organs because they were not pronounced brain dead. CONCLUSION: The rate of successful organ donation may be increased by analyzing the major causes of failure in the brain-dead organ donation management process and engaging in various efforts to prevent such failures.
