2.Effects of Infection Control Education for Families of VRE Patients.
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2012;19(2):212-222
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of infection control education for families of patients infected with vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE). METHOD: Forty family members of VRE patients were chosen from a university hospital and assigned to the experimental or control group. The experimental group was provided infection control education that consisted of one-on-one instruction using an information booklet, hand-washing video, and demonstration of hand washing practice. Dependent variables were self-reported knowledge and performance of VRE infection control measures, and the number of hand washings when entering and leaving patients' rooms. RESULTS: Knowledge and performance scores were significantly higher for the experimental group compared to the control group. The experimental group washed their hands significantly more often when entering and leaving patients' rooms than the control group. CONCLUSION: Infection control education for family members of VRE patients was effective in improving knowledge and performance of infection control measures as well as improving the practice of hand washing. Further investigation is needed on the effects of infection control education for families on the actual VRE colonization and/or infection rate.

Angioedma is a group of disorders with multifactorial etiology but a similar clinical expression, is characterized by swelling of subcutaneous or submucosal tissue. Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) is a chronic multi-systemtic disease characterized by inflammation and tissue damage resulting from deposition of auto-antibodies and immune complex. We experienced a case of angioedema which was the first manifestation of SLE in 24-year-old female patient. She had suffered from severe facial edema and multiple lymphadenopathy for six months and she also had pleural effusion, positive anti-nuclear and anti-DNA antibody test. Marked decrease of C3 and C4 levels was noted with normal antigenic level, and activity of Cl esterase inhibitor. The angioedema was not improved with anti-hitamine agents and instead disappeared with use of corticosteroid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Complement levels normalized after corticosteroid treament. We report a case of SLE which initial manifestation was angioedema.

10.A New Method of One Stage Correction of Taussig-Bing Anomaly with Interrupted Aortic Arch: 1 case report.
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 1997;30(1):83-87
Taussig-Bing anomaly is infrequently associated with interrupted aortic arch and size discrepancy of great arteries makes it difficult to undergo arch recons- truction and arterial switch operation. A 20-day old male infant was admitted with the diagnosis of Taussig-Bing anomaly with type B interrupted aortic arch. Multi-organ failure, due to the diminution of ductal flow, was stabilized after 3 weeks of prostaglandin E1 and controlled ventilatory support. The surgical correction consisted of VSD closure, arterial swtich and extended aortic arch reconstruction. The marked disparity between the hypoplastic ascending aorta and the dilated main pulmonary artery was overcome by constructing distal neoaorta using both native ascending and descending aortic tissue. The patient was extubated on postoperative 2nd day. Postoperative catheterization showed no left ventricular outflow obstruction, no intracardiac shunt, and no incompetence of neoaortic valve.
