Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 2006;0(14):-
Objective To investigate the therapeutic role of hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) on neonatal hearing impairment induced by hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy(HIE),by observing the brain stem auditory evoked potential(BAEP) changes of newborn infants with HIE.Methods One hundred and six cases of HIE in newborn infants(in which 82 cases were mild and 24 cases were severe) treated with HBO and conventional therapy were chosen as HBO treatment group, while other 42 cases of HIE in newborn infants(in which 38 cases were mild and 4 cases were severe) treated with conventional therapy only were served as control group.BAEP was measured at the 3rd to 7th day on patients before treatment and 42 days after birth with or without HBO therapy respectively, and the differences of BAEP changes were compared between the both groups. Results 1.In control group, the rate of abnormality was 47.4% and 31.6%,respectively before and after therapy in mild HIE cases(P=0.240),and 75.0%,50.0% in the moderate-severe HIE cases(P=0.462).2.In HBO group, the abnormal rate was 45.1% and 25.6%,respectively in mild HIE cases before and after therapy, while 75.0% and 41.7% in moderate-severe HIE cases(Pa=0.014,0.039).3.There was obvious difference between control group and HBO group in mild HIE cases(P=0.013),while there was no significant change between the 2 groups in moderate-severe HIE cases(P=0.717).Conclusions Treatment with HBO combined with conventional therapy may improve the abnormal rate of BAEP in patients with HIE according to the present test, especially in mild HIE cases, thus earlier HBO therapy may be used to mitigate hearing impairment and improve prognosis induced by the disease.

Cell swelling activates or upregulates a number of anion channels. Of the volume-activated or-regulated anion channels, the volume-sensitive outwardly rectifying anion channel (VSOR) is most prominently activated and ubiquitously expressed. Volume regulated chloride channels play significant roles in a variety of physiological processes including volume regulation, proliferation, differentiation, migration, apoptosis and resistance of tumor cells. Molecular identification and activation mechanisms of VSOR are poorly understood. Many signaling molecules have been shown to regulate VSOR activity in research, playing permissive or modulatory roles. Therefore, VSOR may be a new anticancer target by identifying its signaling molecules and activation mechanisms.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2005;9(6):214-216
BACKGROUND: Much attention has been focused on mandibular condyle fracture, which has long been considered as a severe injury to the temporomandibular joint(TMJ). Restricted by diagnostic methods, many studies have been conducted on transverse fracture whereas little attention has been paid to longitudinal fracture of the mandibular condyle. Even less is known about longitudinal fracture in young children.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of childhood longitudinal fracture of the mandibular condyle on secondary ankylosis of TMJ.DESIGN: A randomized controlled study.SETTING: Department of Stomatology, General Hospital of Chinese PLA.MATERIALS: The experiment was completed in the Center for Experimental Animals, General Hospital of Chinese PLA. Twelve young Chinese experimental miniature pigs bred by the Institute of Experimental Animals, Beijing Agriculture University, aged 2 -3 months and weighing(5 -5.5) kg, were used and raised with mixed feed, and then divided into 3 groups randomly.METHODS: Food and water was forbidden for the miniature pigs 12 hours before operation. Under anesthesia with(5.0 - 15.0) mg/kg ketamine/xylazine abdominally injected, conventional disinfection was performed in the right lateral decubitus position and layer-by-layer preauricular incisions were made on the left side of the miniature pigs. The joint cyst was incised transversely and the lower cavity of TMJ was exposed and dragged downwards. The mandibular condyle was cleaved into two vertically along the inner 1/3 part of it with a 5.0 mm-wide bone chisel to cause inferior and posterior sagittal fractures. The miniature pigs were executed 3 months and 6 months after operation, and their condyles were cut for observation.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:①The morphological changes of mandibular condyle specimens in the three groups observed with the naked eyes.②The pathological changes of mandibular condyle specimens under light microscope.RESULTS: The articular disc was adhered to the mandibular condyle after 3months. Temporal fossa adhered to the articular disc and mandibular condyle could still be observed in one specimen. Bifid condylar deformity was found in two specimens and no disc perforation was found. The adhesions became more severe after 6 months and bifid condylar deformity was formed in all the 3 specimens, with distinctly thickened discs. Light microscope observation:Three months after fracture, the adhesion between disc and condyle was obvious. There was no clear boundary between the surrounding tissues. The adhesion was composed of fibro-connective tissues, with a large number of chondrocytes in it. Fibro-connective tissues tightly adhered to the trabeculae were found in some adhesions. The fiber of disc became deranged and blood vessels and fatty cells were seen. Six months after fracture, blood vessels, a large number of fibroblasts and sparse chondrocytes were seen in the adhesions. The collagen fibers of the discs were arranged in whirlpool shape. There were a large number of fatty cells and blood vessels within it. The fiber-cartilage of the condylar surface was found thickened and the fiber deranged in the unadhered tissues. Proliferative changes were seen on disc surfaces.CONCLUSION: Childhood longitudinal fracture of the mandibular condyle causes severe secondary injury to TMJ, suggesting a close correlation between longitudinal fracture of the mandibular condyle and TMJ ankylosis.

The antioxidant activity of lycopene is highest among the current carotenoids.Recently the researches on lycopene are focused on ingredient of functional foods in the world. The fermentation production of lycopene by Streptomyces rimosus was reported first time in China. The determination methods, such as spectrophotometric method and HPLC were constructed.Using a stain Fc of Streptomyces rimosus as a original strain,a high-yield lycopene producing mutant strain Fc' was selected after UV mutation. The lycopene yield of the strain is 2.5 times higher than the original strain Fc.The optimal fermentation conditions were determined by flask experiments, and the lycopene yield of strain Fc' reached 230mg/L in flask under the optimal fermentation condition, meanwhile the Streptomyces rimosus strain could produce purer lycopene without adding any blocking agents in its fermentation process. This results lay a good foundation for lycopene commercial production by fermentation using Streptomyces rimosus.
