AIM: To compare the clinical results of suture method and partial eyelash resection treating for pediatric eyelid trichiasis, and screen an effective method for the treatment of pediatric lower eyelid trichiasis.
METHODS: Fifty-six cases of pediatric patients with lower eyelid trichiasis were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group in accordance with the method of drawing lots, and each group was 28 cases. The control group was treated with suture method, and the observation group was treated with partial eyelash resection. The clinical efficacy, patient satisfaction before and after treatment, and the incidence of complications were compared.
RESULTS:(1) The clinically total effective rate was 74%of the control group, which was 89% of the observation group, and there were statistical differences of the clinical efficacy between the two groups ( P<0. 05 ); ( 2 ) the satisfaction scores were (3. 89±1. 22) points and (6. 27±1-86) points of the the control group before and after treatment, which were ( 4. 00±1. 34 ) points and ( 8-95±2-34) points of the observation group, and there were statistical differences of the two groups before and after treatment (P<0. 05), and the scores of the observation group were higher than that of the control group ( P<0-05);(3) complications such as swelling and stitches off appeared in both groups, and the rate was 21% in the control group, which was 11% in the observation group, and there were statistical differences between the two groups (P<0. 05).
CONCLUSION: The treatment of children with lower eyelid trichiasis, suture method is simple and can be performed under local anesthesia in collaboration with children, but with a higher relapse rate, some patients required reoperation;partial resection of eyelashes can be more thoroughly solve the problem of pediatric eyelid trichiasis with low recurrence rate, but children need to be under general anesthesia with some of big risk. So partial resection of eyelashes is unsuitable for using in clinical practice widely and can be used in special cases.

Regarding to the defect of detecting large diameter tail of lipid injectable emulsions in our country, the purpose of this article is to summarize the techniques of detecting large diameter tail, illustrate the impacts of large lipid droplet on the quality of lipid injectable emulsions, emphasize the importance of detecting large diameter tail in lipid emulsions and provide guidance for researching and developing lipid emulsions in domestic market.

AIM: To discuss the single application on iris localization technology in excimer laser for the treatment of astigmatism.
METHODS:Totally 203 cases (406 eyes) of laser in situ keratomileusis ( LASIK ) in the treatment of compound myopic astigmatism patients were operated from November 2011 to November 2012 in our hospital. They were divided into two groups. One was observation group using iris localization and the other was control group using routine operation. Patients in the observation group of 100 cases ( 200 eyes ) , aged 18-43 years old, spherical diopter was - 1. 25 to - 8. 75D, astigmatism was -1. 0 to -3. 25D. In control group, 103 patients ( 206 eyes ) , aged 19-44 years old, spherical diopter was -1. 75-9. 50D, astigmatism was -1. 0 to -3. 25D. The patients in the observation group before the application of WaveScan aberrometer check for iris image, spherical lens, cylindrical lens and astigmatism axis data operation, only single application of iris location, without using wavefront aberration guided technology, laser cutting patterns for conventional LASIK model, spherical, cylindrical mirror and astigmatism axis  RESULTS: Postoperative residual astigmatism, the observation group was significantly better than the control group. Astigmatism axial measurement after operation, the observation group was significantly less than that of the control group. Postoperative visual acuity at 6mo, the observation group was better than that of the control group. The difference was statistically significant.

CONCLUSION: For patients who cannot complete the wavefront aberration guided treatment of astigmatism, can separate the application of wavefront aberration analyzer automatic iris recognition technology to improve precision of astigmatism treatment, give full play to advanced technical performance of equipment, which has good application value.

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), retrograde ureterolithotripsy(URSL) and percutaneous ureterolithotripsy(PCL) in the treatment of proximal ureteral calculi. Methods A total of 397 patients with proximal ureteral calculi treated by ESWL,URSL or PCL ftom September 2001 to December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. Results Among 397 patients,83 patients with a mean stone size of 1.23 cm were treated by ESW L.Of then.13 patients transferred to URSL or ureterolithotomy and the stone-free rate of ESWL 1 month later was 65.7%(46/70).TWO hundred and thirteen patients with a mean stone size of 1.21 cm were treated by URSL and 101 patients with a mean stone size of 1.50 cm were treated by PCL.The stone-free rate of URSL and PCL 1 month after the treatment was 88.2%(172/195)and 96.9%(95/98),respectively.Eighteen patients in URSL group and 3 patients in PCL group trans-ferred to ureterolithotomy.ESWL had a statistically lower stone-free rate than that of URSL and PCL (P＜0.001),both in patients with stone size≤1 cm and＞1 cm.For patients with stone size＞1 cm,PCL achieved a higher stone-free rate than URSL(P=0.005).PCL also had a higher stone-free rate than URSL in treating patients with stone size≤1 cm but there was no statistical difference between them. Conclusions ESWL can still be used as first-line treatment choice for proximal ureteral stones less than 1cm.For patients with proximal ureteral stones larger than 1cm.URSL and PCL are more proper treatment modalities since they can achieve higher stone-free rate and have acceptable low complications.

STUDY SELECTIONOriginal articles regarding the novel role of microRNAs in prostate cancer were selected.

RESULTSMicroRNAs play an important role in prostate cancer such as cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and invasion. Especially microRNAs correlate with prostate cancer cell epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cancer stem cells (CSCs), drug sensitivity, cancer microenvironment, energy metabolism, androgen independence transformation, and diagnosis prediction.

CONCLUSIONSMicroRNAs are involved in various aspects of prostate cancer biology. The role of microRNA in the initiation and development of prostate cancer deserves further study.

Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy(mPCNL)in the treatment of upper urinary tract calculus. Methods The clinical data of 368 cases of upper urinary tract calculus from 2002 to 2006, which underwent mPCNL, were retrospectively analyzed. Among 368 cases analyzed, there were 116 cases with proximal ureteral cal-culus;190 cases of nonstaghorn kidney stones, 62 cases of staghorn stones. Results There were 344 cases(93.5%)treated with one-stage operation, 24 cases(6.5%) with two-stage. Single channel was used in 856 cases(96.70%), two-channel in 12 cases(3.3%). Complete stone clearance was a-chieved in 337 kidneys, giving an overall clearance rate of 91.6%. The average operative time was 73 min. The duration of hospital stay was 4-8 d with an average of 6 d in one-stage and complete clear-ance patients. Postoperative urinary tract infection was seen in 23 patients(6.2 %). Five(1.4 %) pa-tients required blood transfusion after operation. Two patients with severe bleeding were treated with blood transfusion and super-selective arterial embolization. Conclusion mPCNL has definite efficacy in the treatment of upper urinary tract calculus with little suffering and short recovery time.

Objective To investigate the molecular defects of CYPl7A1 gene in a pedigree with two 46,XY patients suffering from 17α-hydroxylase deficiency (17-OHD) and explore the steroid biosynthetic difference in carriers of 17-OHD before and after adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) test.Methods Clinical data and hormone profiles were collected from the members of the pedigree.CYPl7A1 genotyping was performed in the patients and family members with PCR-direct sequencing.A short ACTH test was evaluated in some cases.Results The CYP17 genes of the patients were proved to hold a homozygous mutation with a base deletion and a base transversion (TAC/AA) in exon 6,which produced a missense mutation of Tyr→ Lvs at codon 329 and changed the open reading frame following this codon.The hormone response of the carriers after ACTH stimulation was abnormal between the patients and normal controls.Conclusion 17-OHD in this family was caused by CYP17A1 mutation (TAC329AA):some hormonal response to ACTH stimulation Was abnormal in carriers.

This study aimed to examine the diagnosis performance of 99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) and multimodality imaging [ultrasound,single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT)] for hyperparathyroidism (HPT).From Nov.2009 to Dec.2015,clinical data of a total of 43 HPT patients (16 males and 27 females;26-70 years old,average age:51.60±10.66 years old) were retrospectively analyzed.Among them,19 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) underwent 99mTc-MIBI planar imaging,24 [15 with PHPT and 9 with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT)] underwent SPECT/CT hybrid imaging,and 41 (33 with PHPT and 8 with SHPT) had neck ultrasound imaging.Final diagnosis was determined by pathological examination after surgery.The positive rate was compared between different imaging modalities,and the correlation analysis was conducted between imaging results and lesion size or serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) level.The results showed that the total positive rates of 99mTc-MIBI imaging,ultrasound,and the two combined imaging in the 43 HPT cases were 90.70％ (39/43),58.54％ (24/41),and 100％ (41/41),respectively.According to lesion numbers,the positive rates were 79.10％ (53/67),53.23％ (33/62),and 88.71％ (55/62),respectively.SPECT/CT hybrid images were positive in all the 24 patients who underwent this examination.The mean maximum diameters of the lesions in 99mTc-MIBI positive and negative patients were 1.96±0.95 cm and 1.36±0.67 cm respectively,with statistically significant difference noted (P=0.03).The T/NT of 99mTc-MIBI imaging at the early phase was correlated positively with serum PTH level (r=0.40,P=0.01).The T/NT of 99mTc-MIBI imaging at both the early phase and the delay phase was correlated positively with lesion size (r=0.51,and r=0.45,respectively;P＜0.01 for both).It was concluded that 99mTc-MIBI imaging presents significant value for location diagnosis of HPT,especially when combined with SPECT/CT hybrid imaging or ultrasound.The 99mTc-MIBI uptake correlates positively with serum PTH level and lesion size.

Objectives To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and its tissue inhibitor (TIMP-1) in cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and the relationship between the expression and invasive growth and metastasis of SCC. Methods Immunohistochemical method of streptavidin-peroxidase (SP) was used to detect the expression of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 proteins on the paraffin embedded sections of 65 patients with cutaneous SCC and 5 cases of normal epidermis. The immunohistochemical results were analyzed quantitatively using an image analysis system. Results MMP-9 and TIMP-1 proteins were diffusely expressed on the tumor nests and the mesenchymal cells around the nests, while in normal epidermis MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were weakly positive. The expression level of MMP-9 protein and the ratio of MMP-9/TIMP-1 were higher in aggressive SCC group than those SCC in situ group (t = 2.33 and 2.36, respectively, P
