Objective To study the etiology of nosocomial infection and the risk factors in senile patients with acute myelogenous leukemia who received chemotherapy, then to explore the preventive measure. Methods 9lcases of senile patients with AML received 304 times of chemotherapy, then to analyze the rate of nosocomial infection, the infection site, the result of etiological examination and the relationship between the rate of nosocomial infection and the absolute of neutrophil count in peripheral blood and the duration of agranulocytosis. And then the results were compared with the non-senile patients with AML. Results The statistical indicators of nosocomial infection in senile patients with AML was higher than those younger ones. The rate of infection in lower respiratory tract, oral, alimentary canal, skin, anal area and the rate of sepsis in senile people was higher than those younger ones.Positive rate of fungal infection of senile patients was higher. The nosocomial infection in the patients whose absolute neutrophil count in peripheral blood was no more than 0.5×l09/L,and prolonged over 7 days was specific higher. Conclusions Senile patients with AML is the high risk group for nosocomial infection. Age, chemotherapy, the neutrocytopenia level and prolonged time are related to the nosocomial infection in senile patients with AML. It is necessary to take positive measure to control nosocominal infection and advance life quality of senile patients.

A strain of P. Aeruginosa, which was seperated from clinical environment, shows a special characteristic. It keeps normal short rod shape when cultured at 37℃, however,it forms filament without pyocyanin producing when cultured at 25℃ overnight. The filaments will divide and form short rods, simultaneously, produce pyocyanin when culture time is prolonged to over 72h or culture temperature is raised to 37℃. The preliminary study indicates that this phenomenin has nothing to do with nutritive conditions and could the inbluenced by inoculating density and irradiating with ultraviolet rays The absence of pyocyanin was not the cause of filamentous formation by the test results.

This study aims to investigate the serotype distribution of non-polio enterovirus (NPEV) isolated from patients with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) during 2011-2012 in Hebei Province, China and to analyze the relationship between these viruses and AFP. NPEV strains were isolated from the stool specimens from AFP cases in Hebei using human rhabdomyosarcoma cells (RD) and the mouse cell line expressing the gene for the human cellular receptor for poliovirus (L20B) according to the WHO requirements. The nucleotide sequence of VP1 region was determined, and the serotypes of NPEV were identified by molecular typing. The results showed that among the 82 strains of NPEV isolated from the AFP cases during 2011-2012, 42 isolates (55.3%) were identified as human enterovirus A (HEV-A), which were classified into 4 serotypes, 34 (44.7%) as human enterovirus B (HEV-B), which were classified into 13 serotypes, 2 as adenovirus, and 4 were untyped; human enteroviruses C and D were not found in these cases. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) was the main type of HEV-A, accounting for 85.7% of all HEV-A strains. HEV-A, especially EV-A71, was predominant among the NPEV strains isolated from AFP patients during 2011-2012 in Hebei Province.

The effect of sowing date on grain protein, hordein fraction content and malting quality of two-rowed spring barley was investigated by using ten commercial cultivars with different grain protein content and the relationships among these traits were examined. The results showed that grain protein content and B hordein content increased as the sowing date postponed and were significantly affected by sowing date, while C and D hordein contents were less influenced by sowing date. There were significant differences in grain protein and hordein fraction content among the ten cultivars. The coefficient of variation of D hordein content was much larger than that of B and C hordein contents, suggesting its greater variation caused by different sowing dates. Beta-amylase activity and diastatic power were also significantly affected by sowing date, with malt extract being less affected. Significant differences in measured malt quality were found among the ten cultivars. Grain protein was significantly correlated with B hordein and malt extract positively and negatively, respectively. There was no significant correlation between beta-amylase activity or diastatic power and grain protein content. B hordein was negatively and significantly correlated with malt extract, but no significant correlations between C hordein, D hordein and malting quality traits.

AIMTo investigate the level of immune response and the immune mechanism of the single-dose hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-poly (d, l)-lactide-co-glicolide acid (PLGA) microspheres in BALB/c mice.
METHODSThree kind of HBsAg-PLGA microspheres, HBsAg-PLGA50/50-COOH microspheres, HBsAg-PLGA75/25 microspheres and HBsAg-PLGA50/50 microspheres, were prepared by double emulsion microencapsulation technique used three kinds of PLGA with different L/G ratio. The single-dose of HBsAg-PLGA microspheres was subcutaneously injected into BALB/c mice at the dose of 7.5 microg HBsAg per mouse. The conventional aluminum-adjuvant vaccine was subcutaneously injected at 0, 1 and 2 month as positive control. In certain time interval, the induced immune level of total antibody was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For subclass of IgG antibody and cytokines studies, the dose of HBsAg was 2.5 microg per mouse.
RESULTSThe HBsAg-PLGA microspheres could successfully induce a humoral immune response in BALB/c mice. Compared with the conventional aluminum-adjuvant vaccine, the antibody response of the HBsAg-PLGA50/50-COOH microspheres was significantly lower than the group received three injections of aluminum-adjuvant vaccine (P < 0.01) except for a higher priming response during the early 6 weeks. The results were ascribed to the relatively rapid degradation charactics of PLGA50/50-COOH polymer. The immune response for the HBsAg-PLGA50/50 microspheres and HBsAg-PLGA75/25 microspheres were comparable to the group administered with aluminum-adjuvant vaccine (P > 0.05) which was due to the sustained degradation of PLGA50/50 and PLGA75/25 polymer.
CONCLUSIONThe HBsAg-PLGA microsphere is a promising candidate for the controlled delivery of a vaccine which does not require multiple injections.

Objective To observe the brain activation of interictal epiletiform discharges(IEDs) and to localize the epileptogenic foci of epilepsy. Methods The electroencephalogram(EEG)and functional MRI data of 12 focal epileptic patients were acquired using a combination of EEG and functional MRI simultaneously. The IEDs onset time detected with EEG were set as the time parameters in an event- related paradigm of functional MRI analysis. The spatial and temporal characters of IEDs activation were analyzed in detail. In order to confirm the consistency of this method, all patients were scanned repeatedly and the results were correlated with clinical evaluation. Results Of the 12 patients, valid data from EEG- fMRI were obtained from 10 patients in a total of 18 sessions..Compared with the structural foci, the epileptic foci localization results of eleven sessions were good, five sessions were fairly good, and two sessions were poor. The results obtained from six patients in two separate sessions were concordant.respectively.Moreover,thalamic activation was detected in ten sessions, cerebellar activation was detected in all sessions, and the deactivation was found in the default mode loci in nine sessions. Conclusion The method of performing EEG and fMRI simultaneously can potentially be a useful tool in epilepsy research.

To provide necessary information for further understanding of molecular mechanism of hypoxia acclimatization, the differentially expressed genes of HepG2 cells exposed to normoxia, acute hypoxia-treated cells which were exposed to 1% oxygen for 48 h, and hypoxia-acclimatized HepG2 cells which were cultured for 6 circles of alternate low oxygen (1% oxygen for 24 h) and normal oxygen (21% oxygen for 24 h), were identified respectively by combining the suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and cDNA microarray. Thirty-seven genes were expressed differentially in cells exposed to 1% oxygen for 48 h compared with those in cells exposed to normoxia. The expression of all these 37 genes was down-regulated, including the genes participating in cell cycle, cell response to stimulus, and cell signal transduction, and cell cytoskeleton formation, the genes associated with transcription and cell metabolism, 4 expressed sequence tags (ESTs), and 12 genes of which the functions are not known. There is a novel gene sequence, which has not been found in existing databases. There were only 6 genes differentially expressed in the hypoxia-acclimatized cells compared with cells exposed to normoxia, including two mitochondrion genes, metalloprotease-1 gene, ferritin gene, thymosin beta-4 and TPT1 genes. The expressions of mitochondrion ND4, ferritin, thymosin beta-4 and TPT1 were up-regulated, while the expressions of mitochondrion ND1 gene and metalloproease-1 gene were down-regulated. Cell tolerance to hypoxia increased after the cells were hypoxia-acclimatized. The different gene expression patterns of the acute hypoxia-treated cells and the hypoxia-acclimatized cells may be related to the increased tolerance of the cells to hypoxia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder that predominantly affects children. Previous studies have mostly involved children in Western developed countries. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed the clinical profiles of ADEM in adult Chinese patients. RESULTS: ADEM occurred during summer and autumn in about two-thirds of the 42 included patients. Prior infection was found in five patients and no preimmunization was recorded. The most frequent clinical presentations were alterations in consciousness (79%) and behavior changes (69%), followed by motor deficits (64%) and fever (50%). About one-quarter (26%) of the patients showed positive results for oligoclonal bands, and about half of them exhibited increases in the IgG index and 24-hour IgG synthesis rate. Magnetic resonance imaging showed white- and gray-matter lesions in 83% and 23% of the patients, respectively. Steroids were the main treatment, and full recovery occurred in 62% of the patients, with residual focal neurological deficits recorded in a few patients. After a mean follow-up period of 3.4 years, two patients exhibited recurrence and one patient exhibited a multiphasic course. One patient was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). CONCLUSIONS: With the exception of the seasonal distribution pattern and prior vaccine rate, the clinical profiles of ADEM in adult Chinese patients are similar to those in pediatric populations. No specific markers are available for distinguishing ADEM from MS at the initial presentation. Careful clinical evaluations, cerebrospinal fluid measurements, and neuroradiological examinations with long-term follow-up will aid the correct diagnosis of ADEM.

OBJECTIVETo explore the influence of Kingsbrain (GETO) on the learning memory impairment of rats with cerebral ischemia.
METHODRats with cerebral ischemia were administered GETO orally once a day for one month. The ability of spatial-learning memory of rats was evaluated by Morris Water Maze (MWM). Duxil was used as a positive control.
RESULTthe results of place navigation of MWM showed that at the 3rd time of swimming training, the escape latency of rats of the GETO group, Duxil group and Sham group were shorter than that of model group. The escape latency were (54.1 +/- 43.94), (55.9 +/- 43.49), (50.4 +/- 34.99) and (85.4 +/- 42.8) s, respectively; but there was no significantly difference. After the 6th time of swimming training, the escape latency of rats of the GETO group (37.8 +/- 38.69) s, the Duxil group (37.4 +/- 38.03) s and the sham group (26.9 +/- 21.63) s were significantly shorter than that of model rats (77.5 +/- 47.59) s, P < 0.05, respectively. Comparison of the swimming distance among groups were similar to the escape latency among groups. In the test of spatial probe, results of the ratio of the swimming time of platform quadrant (tP) vs the total swimming time (tT) and the ratio of the swimming distance of platform quadrant (dP) vs the total swimming distance (dT) indicated that the ratios of the GETO group (0.347 +/- 0.0662, 0.344 +/-0.055 1), the Duxil group (0.345 +/- 0.0984, 0.34 +/- 0.0934) and the sham group (0.35 +/- 0.0662, 0.349 +/- 0.0589) were significantly higher than those of the Model group (0.261 +/- 0.0689, 0.274 +/- 0.0544), P < 0.05, respectively.
CONCLUSIONGETO can significantly improve the spatial learning and memory ability of rats with cerebral ischemia, which provides the pharmacodynamics evidence for its clinical application of improveing the learning and memory ability in poststroke patients.
