Sodium houttuyfonate (SH) is a derivative of effective component of a Chinese material medica, Houttuynia cordata, which is applied in anti-infection of microorganism. But, the antimicrobial mechanisms of SH still remain unclear. Here, we firstly discovered that SH effectively inhibits the three types of virulence related motility of.Pseudomonas aeruginosa, i.e., swimming, twitching and swarming. The plate assay results showed that the inhibitory action of SH against swimming and twitching in 24 h and swarming in 48 h is dose-dependent; and bacteria nearly lost all of the motile activities under the concentration of 1 x minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (512 mg x L(-1) same as azithromycin positive group (1 x MIC, 16 mg x L(-1)). Furthermore, we found that the expression of structural gene flgB and pilG is down-regulated by SH, which implies that inhibitory mechanism of SH against motility of P. aeruginosa may be due to the inhibition of flagella and pili bioformation of P. aeruginosa by SR Therefore, our presented results firstly demonstrate that SH effectively inhibits the motility activities of P. aeruginosa, and suggest that SH could be a promising antipseudomonas agents in clinic.

Chinese Journal of Pancreatology 2014;14(4):255-258
Objective To observe the therapeutic effect of Shenmai injection on rats with acute edematous pancreatitis (AEP) and its mechanism. Methods The model of AEP in rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of caerulein every one hour for 7 times. One hour after last injection, intravenous Shenmai injection (5 ml · kg-1 · d-1) was given to rats in Shenmai injection treatment (SI) group, while same amount of normal saline was given to rats in control (AEP) group. One hour and 1,3,5,7 d after AEP induction, the blood was taken, and the method of double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the levels of amylase, platelet activating factor (PAF),vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).The rats were sacrificed at 7 and 14 d,and pancreatic tissue samples were harvested.RT-PCR and Western Blot were used to determine the expression of NF-κB mRNA and protein, and normal pancreatic tissue samples were used as control. The positive expression of CD31 in pancreatic tissue was determined by immunohistochemical method to calculate microvascular density (MVD).Results The serum levels of amylase and PAF in both groups were increased and gradually decreased 3 days later, while the decrement in SI group was greater than that of AEP group. At the 5th day after AEP induction, the serum levels of amylase in SI group and AEP group were (4569 ± 158),(5056 ± 198) U/L,and the serum levels of PAF were (25.30 ± 4.76),(36.06 ± 5.57)μg/L,and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05).The serum levels of VEGF were increased 1 d after AEP induction, and the increase in SI group was greater than that of AEP group 3 d later, and the serum levels of VEGF were (139.78 ±24.30),(118.51 ±21.70)pg/ml at 5th day,and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05).The expression levels of NF-κB mRNA and protein of pancreatic tissue in SI group were O.834 ±0.031 and 0.49±0.24,and MVD was 6.41 ± 1.14,while the corresponding values in AEP group were 1.000 ± 0.059,0.93 ± 0.45,3.62 ± 0.89,and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01).Conclusions In the course of acute pancreatitis,Shenmai injection has the therapeutic effects of promoting new angiogenesis, improving the microcirculation, reducing the inflammatory cascade.

Objective To provide reliable technical method by identifying referential anatomic landmarks for retroperitoneal laparoscopic renal surgery, with respect to the renal hilum and renal artery. Methods The regional anatomy of the posterior abdominal wall was studied in 35 cases of retroperitoneal laparoscopic renal surgery from January to August 2010.These included 27 cases of renal cancer,6 cases of renal pelvis cancer and 2 cases of renal tuberculosis.Distended the retroperitoneal space using balloon dilation along with sharp and dull dissection. We recorded the forms and positions of the posterior abdominal cavity's anatomical landmarks and evaluated the relationship between each anatomical landmark with respect to the renal hilum and renal artery. Results The perirenal fascia posterior layer and perinephric fat on the renal side were observed, and several anatomical landmarks gradually appeared on the posterior abdominal wall. The diaphragm extended across the upper retroperitoneal space near the superior pole of the kidney, and the psoas major and the quadratus lumborum muscles were located at the lower retroperitoneal space, near the inferior part of the kidney. The intersection of the upper diaphragm muscle with the lower psoas major and quadratus lumborum muscles were bordered by the lateral and medial arcuate ligaments. The lateral arcuate ligament arched across the upper part of quadratus lumborum, while the medial arcuate ligament arched across the upper part of psoas major. The medial arcuate ligament points extended towards the upper border of the renal hilum. These landmarks enable us to locate the position of the kidney, reach the renal hilum and identify the renal vessels in all 35 cases. Conclusions The relative position of the muscles and ligaments of the posterior abdominal wall are consistent and can be clearly seen under retroperitoneoscopy.Based on the position of the diaphragm and psoas major, the kidney can be located. In addition, based on the position of the medial arcuate ligament, the renal hilum and renal artery can be located.Assistance from these anatomical landmarks will simplify the retroperitoneal laparoscopic renal surgery.
