Objective To investigate the etiological factors, clinical features and prognosis of non- traumatic rhabdomyolysis(RML). Methods The medical records of 13 non-traumatic RML patients hospital- ized between 1995-2006 were reviewed. The etiological, clinical, laboratory and therapeutic data were anal- ysed. Results Among 13 patients with non-traumatic RML, multiple factors were responsible for rhabdomyol- ysis in eight patients and single etiologic factor in 5 patients. Different etiological factors were identified, in- cluding 6 with excessive exercise, 3 with hyperpyrexia, 3 with drugs(including illicit drugs, fenofibrate, cy- closporine), 3 complicated with inflammatory myopathy and 2 with limbs compression. Nine patients had myal- gia and muscle weakness, 6 patients had abnormality in nervous system, 4 patients had hyperpyrexia, 3 pa- tients had digestive symptoms. Nine patients were complicated by coagulation disorders and 6 with acute renal failure(ARF). The serum levels of creatine kinase(CK)were decreased to normal within one month in 6 patients, the patient whose rhabdomyolysis was induced by fenofibrate with diabetes and chronic renal failure showed to inadequate decrease within 60 days. Three patients whose problem was induced by inflammatory myopathy, CK levels decreased within 4 months and 6 months in 2 patients, respectively, but CK level was not returned to normal level in one patient during the 80 follow-up days. Three patients died from multiple causes, such as ARF, coagulation disorders, electrolyte and metabolic disturbances. Conclusion Excessive exercise is the most common cause of non-traumatic RML, followed by drugs and inflammatory myopathy. The prognosis is poor in patients with multiple etiological factors and ARF.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the semen quality and its influencing factors in preconception males in Nanjing area so as to provide some evidence for working out effective intervention measures.
METHODSTotally 687 men receiving preconceptional physical examination were enrolled in this study. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the subjects along with an analysis of their semen quality.
RESULTSThe median of sperm concentration was 63.3 x 10(6)/ml (95% CI [19.88-119] x 10(6)/ml). The median of grade a sperm was 33.03% (95% CI [19.38-55.05]%), that of grade a + b sperm was 52.08% (95% CI [39.53-69.37]%), and that of teratosperm was 91.75% (95% CI [69-100]%). The median concentration of seminal plasma PMN-elastase was 195.55 ng/ml (95% CI [76.16-3330.38] ng/ml) and that of seminal plasma zinc was 7.62 μmol/L (95% CI [1.5-23, 45] μmol/L). The positive rates of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) were 42.4%, 0.3%, and 2.4%, respectively. The median of sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) of those whose wives had a history of adverse pregnancy was 20.25% (95% CI [2.15-68.25]%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that mental stress (OR 1.567, 95% CI [1.081-2.27]) and sedentariness (OR 1.772, 95% CI [1.211-2.592]) were independent risk factors for asthenospermia.
CONCLUSIONThe sperm quality of preconception males in Nanjing area is not encouraging, and it can be improved by changing undesirable lifestyle and reducing mental stress.

Objective To investigate the changes and significance of concentration of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of bacterial meningitis(BM) in rabbits. Methods A total of 36 rabbits were randomly divided into m eningitis group, meningitis cefotaxime-treated group and control group. BM indu ced by escherichia coli(Ec) via cerebellomedullary cistern inoculated. Normal sa line was injected in control group. CSF was sampled in different time. The conce ntration of CSF sICAM-1 was detected by ELISA.Results 1.There was a low concentration of sICAM-1 in CSF in 85 percent of normal rabbi ts.2.In meningitis group, there was a sharp rise in the concentration of CSF sIC AM-1 at 6 hours after Ec was inoculated, reached a peak level at 12 hours, and t here was higher concentration of CSF sICAM-1 between 6 and 24 hour than that at 0 hour.3.In meningitis cefotaxime-treated group, the concentration of CSF sICAM -1 at 6 hour and 12 hours was similar to meningitis group, the time that get pe ak level was at 24 hours that at 12 hours after making use of antimicrobial agen t.The peak level was higher than meningitis group. The concentration of CSF sICA M-1 decreased markedly at 48 hours that made use of antimicrobial agent 36 hour s later, but the concentration was still higher than the peak level of meningitis group.Afterwards, with the time of making use of antimicrobial agent lengthened ,the concentration of CSF sICAM-1 decreased gradually.4.Experimental results in dicated by correlating analysis to these data that there was positive correlatio n in the concentration of CSF sICAM-1 with the brain water content. Conclusions sICAM-1 participates in the pathological process of BM, and contributes to the damage of blood brain barrier and the formation of brain edema. There is importan t significance that drugs which can resist the discharge of sICAM-1 will be impl ied. · AIM: To search an easy and simple way for intraocular implantation after the eye evisceration.· METHODS: Fifteen healthy New Zealand rabbits were divided into 5 groups according to the sacrifice time, and each group included 3 rabbits; the left eye received the injection of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement (2g per mL), while the right eye served as control. Under general anesthetia, a 3mm incision was made on the sclera, and the eye contents and pigment tissues were extruded out with fingers. Then, PMMA bone cement (2g per ml) was injected through the scleral incision. Both the operated eye and control eye of the rabbits were enucleated and weighed,The reaction of the operated eye (macroscopically and histopathologically) was noted at frequent interval. The obtained data were then analyzed with ANOVA (SPSS11.5).· RESULTS: There was swelling of eyelids and conjunctiva at the early time after the injection, but no significant difference between the weight of the left and right eyes was noted,Histopathologic examination showed scleral and other tissues necrosis at early period, and then the tissues reaction turned into a great deal of cell proliferation and finally into extensive fibro-connective tissues. Three months after the operation, neovascularization was observed in the cornea of the operated eyes. Histopathologic examination showed formation of fibro-membrane around the intraocular implant, and disappearance of the inflammation.· CONCLUSION: The method of injecting PMMA bone cement (2g per ml) to form an intraocular implant is quite simple and economical; this method is also easy to use clinically.

Objective To study the characteristics of the transcranial electric stimulation(TES)-elicited motor evoked potentials(MEP)recorded from different points of the diaphragm, and to determine the optimal record- ing site in the diaphragm. Methods One EEG electrode was placed subcutaneously in the midline of the skull as stimulation electrode and another EEG electrode was inserted into hard palate submucously as cathode in 30 male rats. And single square wave electrical pulse was used for stimulation. The stimulation intensity was 15 mA,the du- ration of the pulse was 0.2 ms,and the stimulating interval was 200 ms.The concentric needle electrode were insert- ed into the following eight sites:the medial, intermediate, lateral crura of the diaphragm, the junction of the posterior axilla line and the inferior border of the eleventh rib,the junction of the anterior axilla line and the inferior border of the ninth rib,the junction of the intermediate line of the clavicle and the inferior border of the eighth rib,the junction of the para-sternal line and the inferior border of the seventh rib,the pars sternalis. The MEP was recorded from each point, respectively. The optimal sites of the diaphragm MEP were found and recorded. Results The MEPs were re- corded from each of the 8 sites of the diaphragm in all the rats after TES.There was no statistically significant differ- ence among the latencies of every site. But the amplitude varied from 6.08?0.46 mV in maximum along the inferior border of the ninth rib at the anterior line of the axilla to the minimum of O.91?0.03 mV at the pars sternalis. Conclusion It is safer to insert the needle along the inferior border of the ninth rib at the anterior line of the axilla, because there was certain distant from the folding part of the pleura and the amplitude of the recorded wave at this point is maximal.

OBJECTIVETo constitute a model of B immunoblastic lymphomas in the Hu-PBL-SCID mice.
METHODSThe SCID mice were reconstituted by intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of 5 x 10(7) human lymphocytes from Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) seronegative individuals. After one week, the SCID mice were inoculated with EBV by i.p. injection, and subjected to the investigation of whether there was any tumor in the abdomen of such SCID mice four weeks later. The characteristics of the found tumor was observed by the methods of Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) stain, immunohistochemical staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
RESULTSCompared with the control groups, all the EBV-infected Hu-PBL-SCID mice had abdominal solid tumors [(32 +/- 12.5) mm3] developed, often located in the liver. HE staining and immunohistochemical staining showed the tumors were human B cell lymphomas. EBV DNA could be detected in the tumors by the PCR.
CONCLUSIONSThe model of B immunoblastic lymphomas in the Hu-PBL-SCID mice is successfully constituted, and may well be useful to the human tumor immunological study.
