AIM: Recent studies showed that stem cells could replace injured cardiomyocyte and increase the number of functional cardiomyocytes. Researching the pertinent literature in China Journal Full-text Database (CJFD) published between 2005 and 2008 indicated that the researches on stem cell transplantation in the treatment of primary dilated cardiomyopathy were few. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy and security of peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in coronary artery in treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy and its effects on left ventricular function. METHODS: Forty-two patients with dilated cardiomyopathy between December 2006 and September 2007 were enrolled at the Department of Cardiology of First People's Hospital of Yunnan, including twenty-eight males and fourteen females, averagely aged (56?3) years. Inclusive criteria: patients with less than 65 years, left ventricular enlargement, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 45%, and without coronary artery disease after coronary arteriongraphy. Informed consents were obtained from patients. Patients were divided into stem cell transplantation group (n=15) and control group (n=27) on the basis of whether being treated by stem cell transplantation. Patients in the stem cell transplantation group were consecutively administered granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) by hypodermic injection to stimulate bone marrow stem cells themselves based on conventional treatment for five days. Peripheral blood stem cell suspension was disassociated on the 6th day, and the collected suspension was injected into left anterior descending branch over the wire saccule tube for autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Patients in the control group were administered by conventional treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy. Security and adverse reaction were observed during the mobilization, collection and returning injection of peripheral blood stem cell by coronary artery. Morphous, cardiac function and motion index of left ventricle wall were evaluated using ultrasoundcardiogram before and 3 months after transplantation. Survival rate and incidence rate of heart incidents were compared. RESULTS: Three months after stem cell transplantation in coronary artery, there were a significant decrease in cardiac end-systolic volume (ESV), cardiac end-diastolic volume (EDV) and motion index of left ventricle wall, but a significant increase in LVEF(P

Objective To investigate the protective effect of endotoxin pretreatment on hippocampal neurons in rat forebrain following ischemia reperfusion and its possible mechanism. Methods Rat forebrain ischemia reperfusion model was used. The effects of endotoxin pretreatment on the changes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH PX) and malondialdehyde (MDA) activities and the neuron count in CA1 region were observed. Results Pretreament with endotoxin before cerebral ischemia enhanced the activities of SOD and GSH PX but decreased MDA level and the number of ischemic neurons in CA1 region. Conclusion Endotoxin pretreatment can protect the neurons in rat forebrain against ischemia reperfusion injury. The mechanism may be associated with the enhancement of endogenous antioxidant activity in central nervous system.

Objective To learn the present status of defluoridation water improvement project in Shanxi province in order to provide scientific basis for speeding up the prevention and control of endemic fluorosis. Methods According to "The National Technical Scheme for Endemic Disease Control" from 2005 to 2009, the investigation points were selected in the counties that implemented the measures of water improvement and defluoridation, the status of drinking water defluoridation Project was investigated, and the water fluoride levels were determined by fluoride selective ion electrode. Results The primary status was surveyed in 1658 water improvement and defluoridation projects in 51 counties. The resource of drinking water for water improvement and defluoridation projects was mostly ground water[accounting for 93.12% (1544/1658)]. Among 1658 water improvement and defluoridation projects 1405 projects worked well(accounting for 84.74%) and 190 projects intermittently worked (accounting for 11.46%). Sixty three projects abandoned (accounting for 3.80%), in Datong basin the abandoned projects accounted for 36.36% (12/33). Water fluoride content of 1595 water improvement and defluoridation projects had been determined, among them water fluoride content of 874 projects were above 1.0 mg/L (accounting for 54.80%). The situations of exceeded national standard in the five basins was different(H = 33.22,P < 0.01). The rate of over national standard of fluoride levels in drinking water was 88.37%(38/43) in Datong basin. Therefore, in Datong basin water improvement should be strengthened. Conclusions In Shanxi province the water improvement and defluoridation projects are basically running normally. However, the qualified rate is lower for the water improvement and defluoridation projects. The water improvement status varies dramatically among areas. The situation is still grim in Shanxi province. Water improvement and defluoridation needs to be strengthened to improve the effect of prevention and control of the disease.

Objective To analyze comprehensively the monitoring data of iodized salt in Zhangjiakou city during 2001 to 2009, and to provide basic information for working out control strategies of the iodine deficiency disorders. Methods According to the iodized salt monitoring requirements in National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Monitoring Program of Ministry of Health, a batch of nine salt samples were taken from each processing (wholesale)company of each county or district of the seventeen counties(districts) of Zhangjiakou once a month. Two townships (towns, street offices) were selected by their location of east, south, west and north in each county(district), and a township in central area each year. Four villages(neighborhoods) were selected in each township(town, street office),and eight household salt samples were collected in each village(neighborhood), and quantitatively determined by direct titration of iodine. Results Iodized salt processing(wholesale) : during 2001 to 2009, a total of 1728 batches was monitored, 1689 batch qualified, batch qualification rate 97.74%;15552 salt samples were tested, 15 357 qualified, iodized salt qualification rate 98.75 %. Household salt levels : 5297 villages (neighborhoods) of 1305 townships(towns, street offices) were monitored, 44 316 salt samples were collected, 43 274 qualified, iodized salt qualification rate 98.04%(43 274/44 141 ), iodized salt coverage rate 99.61%(44 141/44 316), qualified iodized salt consumption rate 97.65%(43 274/44 316). Rate of non-iodized salt was 0.40%(260/44 316), and salt median iodine was 30.02 mg/kg. Conclusions The iodized salt quality indicators are within the state-controlled range in Zhangjiakou city for nine years which remaines at relatively stable levels with a smaller range of annual fluctuations.Detection of non-iodized salt over the years has become the main factors affecting the effectiveness of the prevention and control measures. We should increase monitoring, supervision, and universal health education, and prevent the spread of non-iodized salt.
