Journal of the Korean Hip Society 2006;18(3):116-120
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mortality of patients over eighty years old with femoral neck fractures that have been treated with bipolar endoprostheses. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied 37 patients out of a total of 83, who suffered from hip fractures and were treated with surgery from 2000 through December 2004. We attempted to distinguish the differences between the 8 patients who died (Group A) and the 29 patients who lived (Group B). The variables that we analyzed, were: age, sex, operative time, the time period from admission to surgery, the time period from admission to discharge, the ASA score, and any medical comorbidities. Results: In Group A, 2 patients died within 1 month, 2 died between 1 and 6 months, 1 died between 6 and 12 months, and 3 died after 1 year. There were statistical differences between Group A and Group B with respect to two variables: the time period from admission to, and medical comorbidities. Conclusion: There were significant correlations with an increase in the mortality rate among patients with lung disease, female patients in general, and delays in surgery. Therefore, particular care should be paid to patients with these variables.

6.A Clinical Study of Comorbidity of ADHD.
Journal of the Korean Child Neurology Society 1999;7(2):237-243
PURPOSE: A number of emotional, behavioral, cognitive conditions co-occur with ADHD(Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). These conditions were commonly unrecognized due to the lack of appropriate questioning and evaluation. Thus, This study is aimed to evaluate the comorbidity of ADHD using K-CBCL(Child Behavior Check List). METHODS: Among the patients diagnosed with ADHD by using DSM-IV. A total of 41 patients(11 female and 30 male) were examined by K-CBCL. They ranged in age from 4 years to 14 years with a mean age of 8 years. They were classified into three clinical types; Inattentive, Hyperactive/Impulsive, and Combined type. They were subgrouped again by the presence of Learning Disability(LD). The Scores were compared among the groups and the data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and post hoc analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-six percent of the cases scored greater than 70 on at least one factor measured, and 27% seemed to have LD. Female patients were more likely to have social withdrawal and thought problems(P<0.05), and Hyperactive/Impulsive type was more likely to have aggression as compared with Inattentive type(P<0.01). The patients with LD scored worse on the item of attention compared with the cases without LD(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Comorbidity of ADHD is relatively common and may have a significant impact on functioning, management, and prognosis of patients with ADHD. Rating scales such as K-CBCL can provide a lot of information at a relatively low cost and help sketch the clinical pictures of patients.

7.Visual Fields in Normal Korean Measured with Humphrey Field Analyzer.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1998;39(7):1499-1504
Central 30-2 threshold tests were performed in 124 eyes of 62 normal subjects with Humphrey Field Analyzer. The average value of foveal threshold, mean deviation(MD), pattern standard deviation(PSD), shor-term fluctuation(SF) and corrected pattern standard deviation(CPSD) were 34.3+/-2.6dB, -1.96+/-1.31dB, 2.25+/-0.88dB, 1.38+/-0.52dB and 1.41+/-1.10dB, respectively. The frequency of abnormal value on automated perimetry(p<5%) was 25.5% in foveal threshold and 19.1% in MD, which was higher than fundamental data of perimetry. As the age increased, foveal threshold decreased (r=-0.729), PSD and CPSD increased (r=0.422) and 0.385, respectively) ; these are statistically significant correlations(p<0.05). This study has the limitation that test was performed on single session and had small study group. Therefore, further study is needed with comparative analysis following repeated test and larger group of visual field examination.

Complications of penile prosthesis include malfunction, infection and patient dissatisfaction. Herein, a rare complication of a retained reservoir having eroded into the bladder after the removal of the penile components of a three-piece penile prosthesis, is reported. A 39-year-old man complained of irritative voiding symptoms. The symptoms had developed 4 years after the removal of the penile components of the prosthesis. The erosion of the reservoir into the bladder was discovered incidentally during the treatment of bladder calculi. The reservoir was removed by an open vesicolithotomy.

Diffuse leiomyomatosis of the esophagus is a rare condition and usually extends from the mid-esophagus to the proximal third of the stomach. Macroscopically, there is a marked diffuse thickening of the esophageal wall, with or without nodularity, predominantly affecting the circular muscle coat. Microscopically, the disorder is characterized by the loss of the normal orientation of the smooth muscle fibers of all three layers. We report a case in a 37-year-old woman which was incidentally discovered at exploratory thoracotomy.

10.Effects of an Empowerment Program on Self-esteem and Depression for Low-income Elderly Women Living Alone.
Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 2012;21(4):311-320
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an empowerment program on self-esteem and depression provided through home visits to low-income elderly women who live alone. METHODS: The research design was a control group pre-post test design. The participants were 49 low-income women over age 65 living alone, 24 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The independent variable was the empowerment program, and the dependent variables were self-esteem and depression. The empowerment program was provided for 60 minutes, once a week for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS: The experimental group reported significant improvement in self-esteem compared to the control group (t=12.50, p<.001). The experimental group also reported significant improvement in depression scores compared to the control group (t=-9.59, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the empowerment program has the potential to improve the mental health of low-income elderly women.
