Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mortality of patients over eighty years old with femoral neck fractures that have been treated with bipolar endoprostheses. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied 37 patients out of a total of 83, who suffered from hip fractures and were treated with surgery from 2000 through December 2004. We attempted to distinguish the differences between the 8 patients who died (Group A) and the 29 patients who lived (Group B). The variables that we analyzed, were: age, sex, operative time, the time period from admission to surgery, the time period from admission to discharge, the ASA score, and any medical comorbidities. Results: In Group A, 2 patients died within 1 month, 2 died between 1 and 6 months, 1 died between 6 and 12 months, and 3 died after 1 year. There were statistical differences between Group A and Group B with respect to two variables: the time period from admission to, and medical comorbidities. Conclusion: There were significant correlations with an increase in the mortality rate among patients with lung disease, female patients in general, and delays in surgery. Therefore, particular care should be paid to patients with these variables.

Diffuse leiomyomatosis of the esophagus is a rare condition and usually extends from the mid-esophagus to the proximal third of the stomach. Macroscopically, there is a marked diffuse thickening of the esophageal wall, with or without nodularity, predominantly affecting the circular muscle coat. Microscopically, the disorder is characterized by the loss of the normal orientation of the smooth muscle fibers of all three layers. We report a case in a 37-year-old woman which was incidentally discovered at exploratory thoracotomy.

8.Effects of an Empowerment Program on Self-esteem and Depression for Low-income Elderly Women Living Alone.
Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 2012;21(4):311-320
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an empowerment program on self-esteem and depression provided through home visits to low-income elderly women who live alone. METHODS: The research design was a control group pre-post test design. The participants were 49 low-income women over age 65 living alone, 24 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The independent variable was the empowerment program, and the dependent variables were self-esteem and depression. The empowerment program was provided for 60 minutes, once a week for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS: The experimental group reported significant improvement in self-esteem compared to the control group (t=12.50, p<.001). The experimental group also reported significant improvement in depression scores compared to the control group (t=-9.59, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the empowerment program has the potential to improve the mental health of low-income elderly women.

9.Analysis of Urine Iodine Concentration by Inductively Coupled Plasma-mass Spectrometry Method in Normally Developed Children Aged Less than 7 Years in Masan City (Korea).
Journal of the Korean Child Neurology Society 2011;19(3):199-207
PURPOSE: Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones, and iodine deficiency disorder, including mental retardation, hypothyroidism, goiter, cretinism, and developmental abnormalities is the world's greatest single cause of preventable brain damage. Urine iodine (UI) is a sensitive indicator of recent changes in iodine intake. The objective of this study was to analyze the UI concentration in children younger than 7 years of age. METHODS: This population-based cross sectional study was conducted in four nurseries, three kindergartens, and the Samsung Changwon Hospital of Masan city in Korea from February to June 2010. Three hundred eighty-one samples of urine and 345 simple questionnaires were collected from normally developed preschool children less than 7 years of age. Urine samples were transferred to the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Samsung Seoul Hospital to measure UI concentration by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. RESULTS: The median UI concentration was 327.9 microg/L (range 26.3-19,152.0 microg/L). There were 38 (10.0%) children with insufficient iodine intake (UI less than 100 microg/L). Of all children tested, the percentage of children with excessive iodine intake (UI over 300 microg/L) was 54.9%, and extremely high values exceeding 1,000 microg/L were found in 15.5% of investigated children. There was a significant difference in the median UI concentration between three age groups (P<0.05) but no significance between males and females. CONCLUSION: After measuring UI concentration, we report excessive iodine intake in preschool children less than 7 years of age in Masan city, Korea. In our population sample, we found that 10.0% of children had iodine deficiency.
