Journal of the Korean Fracture Society 2008;21(2):124-129
PURPOSE: To cmpare the clinical results of complex tibial plateau fractures treated by hybrid external fixation and dual plate fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied forty patients with Schatzker type V and VI fractures respectively and selected twenty seven patients who were followed at least one year between January 2000 and December 2005. We evaluated the clinical results in which fourteen fractures with hybrid external fixation were compared with thirteen fractures with dual plate fixation. The clinical results were evaluated according to Knee Society Clinical Rating System and the statistical analysis was performed by Student t-test. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in terms of bone union time (average union time: dual plate fixation 13.8 weeks, hybrid external fixation 14.2 weeks). The quality of osseous reduction was superior in the fractures with dual plate fixation than those with hybrid external fixation. There were significant differences in functional score (average functional score: dual plate fixation 73, hybrid external fixation 62), but not in average knee score. CONCLUSION: The hybrid external fixation can be a useful modality for treatment of complex proximal tibial plateau fractures. But the good quality of the fracture reduction by dual plate fixation may be a indicator for favorable prognosis for satisfactory knee function.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 2008;59(5):289-292
An osteoma is a relatively common benign mass found in paranasal sinus lesions and is usually asymptomatic. On the other hand, pneumocephalus associated with a frontal or ethmoid sinus osteoma is rare and may cause serious complications. We present a case of pneumocephalus associated with a frontoethmoid sinus osteoma and porencephaly along with a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Several antibiotics can be used to treat ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB-VAP) including high-dose sulbactam. However, the effectiveness of high-dose sulbactam therapy is not well known. We report our experience with high-dose sulbactam for treatment of CRAB-VAP. METHODS: Medical records of patients with CRAB-VAP who were given high-dose sulbactam between May 2013 and June 2015 were reviewed. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients with CRAB-VAP were treated with high-dose sulbactam. The mean age was 72.0 ± 15.2 years, and the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) score was 15.1 ± 5.10 at the time of CRAB-VAP diagnosis. Early clinical improvement was observed in 65.5% of patients, and 30-day mortality was 29.3%. Early clinical failure (odds ratio [OR]: 8.720, confidence interval [CI]: 1.346-56.484; p = 0.023) and APACHE II score ≥ 14 at CRAB-VAP diagnosis (OR: 10.934, CI: 1.047-114.148; p = 0.046) were associated with 30-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: High-dose sulbactam therapy may be effective for the treatment of CRAB-VAP. However, early clinical failure was observed in 35% of patients and was associated with poor outcome.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1990;7(1):51-60
In order to assess the physical growth of primary school student in the rural area, body height, weight, chest circumference and sitting height of 923 students (469 males, 454 females) in the town of Angang, Kyungpook province, Korea, were measured from April to May, 1988. The most growth age of boy height was 10-11 years old in both sex and the growth curves were crossed at 9-11 years old. The most rapid growth age of body weight was 10-11 years old and growth curves were crossed at 9-11 years old. The most rapid growth age of chest circumference was 10-11 years old in female, whereupon female outgrows male by contrast with male's slow and linear growth. The most rapid growth age of sitting height was 10-11 years old and the growth curves were crossed at 9-10 years old. The Rother index was 1.17-1.30 in male, 1.16-1.29 in female, and male's index was in general superior to female's.

Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow 2016;19(4):223-228
BACKGROUND: The aim of study was to confirm the clinical effectiveness and results of wide and single anterior approach for fractures occurring along length of humerus. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with humeral fracture were enrolled into our study who were able to participate in at least one year of follow-up. Seven patients had segmental comminuted humeral fractures and 16 patients had distal humeral fractures. We made various tractions of the muscles to expose the proximal and the middle third humerus between the biceps and brachialis and the distal humerus by partial splitting of lateral side of biceps through a single incision. Postoperatively, we measured the Mayo elbow performance index (MEPI). RESULTS: we achieved bone union in all 23 patients. Solid union of the bone was achieved at an average 13.9 weeks. Postoperatively, two complications were observed screw loosening and nonunion. Revision surgery was performed in both patients. The patient with bone nonunion was treated using bone grafts. No postoperative infections or peripheral neuropathies were observed. At the final follow-up (average 20 months), we found that the average MEPI functional score of the patients was 91.7 points regardless of the fracture site. CONCLUSIONS: Our whole humerus with a single incision was effective for the treatment of segmental comminuted and distal fractures. we believe it is a useful alternative to preexisting methods of fracture fixation.

Kerion celsi caused by Trichophyton(T.) rubrum is rare endemically and there has been no report of it in Korean literatures. We report a case of karion celsi caused by T. rubrum in a 71-year-old male, who showed anindurated, swollen, boggy mass exuding pus on the right parietal scalp for about 7 weeks. The colonies and microconidia were identified as T. rubrum by fungus culture in potato dextrose agar. After administration of itraconazole for 11 weeks, the lesion was healed and the regrowing of new hairs was observed.

Journal of the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine 1998;9(2):286-293
BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is very not uncommon disease and has many difficulties in the diagnosis of disease. So we should evaluate the significance of diagnosis by "MANTRELS" score which is very simple and easily accessible tools in patients of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. METHODS: We studied 164 patients initially complainted of right lower quadrant abdominal pain from Jan 1 to Jun 30. 1997 in emergency department of Yeungnam university hospital. At first, "MANTRELS" scores was calculated and we evaluated the final diagnosis, surgically operated or not, transferred or not, etc, retrospectively. Next, two groups were divided each that group A was surgically operated, group B was not surgically operated. And then the statistical significance and accuracy rate according to scores and cut-off values in each groups were evaluated. RESULTS: All 164 patients was admitted in emergency department of Yeungnam University hospital and male to female ratio was 1:0.98, mean ages was 35.3 years old. The incidences according to each items of "MANTRELS" were as follows; most in Tenderness and Shift to left, Migration of pain in group A and most in Tenderness and Anorexia. Nausea in group B. As the results according to each scores in both group, score 8; 25 cases, score 7; 14 cases in group B were showed and the correlation coefficients was 0.979. And as the results according to cut-off value in both groups. it's sensitivity and negative predictability. false negative, positive joint probability were decreased and others were increased as the cut-off values, respectively. The diagnostic weight was most highest(75.0%) when the cut-off value was 7. CONCLUSION: The authors would authorize that "MANTRELS" score is very simple scoring system and have diagnostic values in differentiating between acute appendicitis and other diseases complaining of right lower quadrant abdominal pain.

Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 1997;52(5):650-655
Ultrasonographic localizations were performed by methylene blue injection in 35 cases of nonpalpable breast lesion. The lesions were sized 0.3cm-1.3cm and biopsied just after localization with 100% success rate. All the patients tolerated well the procedure and had not any complications. Ultrasonoguided dye injection is an accurate, comfortable and simple method for prebiopsy localization of nonpalpable breast lesion.
