Objective To discuss the causes and therapies for the complications induced by endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) in patients with varicose great saphenous vein. Methods From August 2003 to February 2007,totally 342 patients (530 limbs) with varicose great saphenous veins were treated by high ligation combined with EVLT in our hospital. Operative compilations were found in 186 of the limbs. The data of the 186 limbs were analyzed retrospectively. Results The patients were followed up for 6 months, during which 23 limbs showed skin bruises and/or hematoma,65 develped phlebitis, and 20 had skin burns; all of these cases were cured. In addition,77 limbs were diagnosed as having saphenous nerve damage (abnormal skin sensation),57 of them were cured and 20 were improved after treatments. Deep vein thrombosis complicated with pulmonary embolism was found in one case, who was improved after therapies. Conclusions To prevent the complications of EVLT combined with high ligation of the saphenous vein, intraoperative adjustment of laser power according to the surgical sites, gentle operation, postoperative administration of anticoagulants, and early rehabilitation are recommended.

The total knee replacement is an excellent method for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. of the knee joint. The tendency of the use of total knee prosthesis is increasing now in Korea. But domestic production of the prosthesis is not avaliable and all are imported from abroad. Moreover, these prosthesis are not well adapted to Korean people, and in occation, the custom-made prosthesis should be needed. So, domestic production of the prosthesis is required. For production of new prosthesis, in cooperation with KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), we developed the new alloy 15-57 for total knee prosthesis. We conducted an animal experimental study to confirm the biocompatibility of the new alloy. In this experiment, the Zimmer® company vitallium was compared with this new alloy as control study. The results are as follows: 1. Biocompatibility of the new alloy 15-57 is similar than that of Zimmer® company vitallium in histological study of metal-bone interspace area. 2. Surface corrosion of both metal was nearly absent. 3. In summary, the new alloy 15-57 is suggested as an acceptable metal for the production of total knee prosthesis.

OBJECTIVETo survey the treatment status and clinical features of hospitalized patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) of 13 hospitals in Beijing in 2005.
METHODSUniform questionnaires were used to register AMI patients hospitalized from January 1 to December 31, 2005 in the 13 hospitals including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals (n = 6) and western medicine hospitals (WM, n = 7) from Beijing. A total of 1663 AMI patients were registered (1366 cases in WM hospitals and 297 cases in TCM hospitals). An Access database was established and patient information was input, the clinical features and treatment status of hospitalized AMI patients were analyzed.
RESULTSThe mean age was (63.9 +/- 12.8) years old [(62.8 +/- 12.8) years for WM Hospitals and (69.1 +/- 11.8) years for TCM hospitals, P < 0.05], male to female ratio was 2.4:1 (2.7:1 for WM hospitals and 1.6:1 for TCM hospitals, P < 0.05). The median time to hospital was 14 hours in TCM hospitals and 11 hours in WM hospitals (P > 0.05). Incidences of history of cerebrovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and complications such as in-patient arrhythmia, cardiac insufficiency, cardiogenic shock were significantly higher in TCM hospitals than in WM hospitals. The total mortality of 1663 AMI cases was 8.2% (15.8% in TCM hospitals vs. 6.6% in WM hospitals, P < 0.01). The reperfusion rate including emergency PCI and thrombolytic therapy rate was 31.3% in 13 hospitals (33.3% in WM hospitals vs. 21.9% in TCM hospitals, P < 0.05). Percent of guideline recommend drug use for AMI was as follows: aspirin 93.6%, ACEI and ARB 85.1%, beta-blocker 78.7%, low molecular weight heparin 85.4%, statins 74.7%.
CONCLUSIONSReperfusion therapy and guideline recommended drugs were widely used although there was a need for further improvement. The hospitalized mortality showed a downward trend compared with results from five years ago, patients in TCM hospitals had an independent clinical features.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2005;30(23):1809-1811
This article made a brief analysis of clinical adverse effects of cinnabar. Except for allergic reaction, almost all the adverse events of cinnabar were caused by unreasonable application. The majority of the poisoning cases were associated with excessive and/or long-term dosage, and improper preparation methods, such as decocting, heating or fumigating. Children showed to be prone to poisoning. The poisoning caused by unreasonable use of cinnabar should be considered to be drug alert, but not advert effect. And the toxicity of cinnabar could be avoided by normalizing the preparation method, controlling the dosage and duration.
