BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster(HZ), caused by reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus, is manifested by dermatomal distribution of skin rashes, acute pain and post-herpetic neuralgia by pathologic involvement of the sensory ganglia. Low-energy laser(LEL) deliver a small amount of energy without elevation of the tissue temperature. LEL is reported to have various biologic effects such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, regenerative, antiallergic, immunocorrective, and antibacterial effects. OBJECTIVE: We attempted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of LEL on an acute phase of HZ. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with acute HZ were enrolled in the study. The control group(30 patients) received medications including analgesics, antihistamine, and topical care without LEL irradiation. The experimental group(30 patients) were irradiated with LEL daily for 7 days in addition to the same kinds of medications for the control group. The efficacy of LEL irradiation for HZ was assessed by analyzing changes in skin rashes, pain scores, and postherpetic neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to control an outbreak of Shigella infection, because of the ease of transmission and the resistance to multiple antibiotics. Recently, there were outbreaks of Shigella infection in Chinju area. The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology of the outbreaks using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis(PFGE). METHOD: Thirteen S. flexneri strains, 25 S. sonnei strains from Chinju and 15 S. sonnei strains from Pusan were studied. All strains were isolated from stool cultures of diarrheal patients. Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility test those were tested by Vitek GNI and GNS-LH. Chromosomal DNA restricted with Xbal was resolved by PFGE. RESULT: All the S. flexneri strains and 23(92%)S. sonnei strains from Chinju were resistant to one or more antimicrobial agents. All the clinical isolates of S. flexneri showed the same PFGE pattern which was different from type strains(KTCC 2517). PFGE patterns of 25 (100%) S. sonnei strains from Chinju and 12 (80%) S. sonnei strains from Pusan were identical to those of type strain (KTCC 2009). Three S. sonnei strains from Pusan showed distinct PFGE patterns, respectively. CONCLUSION: PFGF demonstrated identical restriction pattern among most of Shigella isolates from Chinju and Pusan, indicating that an outbreak with genetically related strains had occurred. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate US and CT features of choroidal osteoma. MATERIALS AND METHDOS: US and CT scans of seven cases of choroidal osteoma occurring in six patients were retrospectively analyzed. We analysed US and CT findings with particular attention to the location, size, and shape of calcification associated with choroidal osteoma, and sought the possible cause of the tumor, if any. RESULTS: None of six patients had any possible cause related to choroidal osteoma. All of seven cases of choroidal osteoma were manifested as calcified mass which were located in the posterior wall of the eyeball near the juxtapapillary region. Calcification ranged in size from 1 to 2 cm and had curvilinear shape. Both US and CT were equally useful to evaluate choroidal osteoma. CONCLUSION: By depicting the characteristic calcification, US and CT are useful imaging modalities in evaluating choroidal osteoma.

This study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic value of colposcopy by comparing colposcopic findings with cytology, histology of colposcopically directed biopsy and final biopsy result on hysterectomy. From January 1, 1988 to August 31, 1996, the colposcopic examinations was undertaken in 1200 patients, excluding grossly visible carcinoma of the cervix. The result were as follows : 1. Colposcopic examinations were satisfactory in 95.4% and unsatisfactory in 4.58%. 2. The accuracy rate of cytologic diagnosis was 73.1% and colposcopic impression was 93.1%. 3. The false negative rate of colposcopic impression was 2.6%, much less than 24,7% of cytologic examination. 4. The cytologic accuracy rate in cervicitis was higher than that of colposcopic impression but the accuracy rate of colposcopic impression in diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia was higher than that of cytology. 5. Among 97 cases in which colposcopically directed biopsy were performed, more advanced lesion were disclosed in 12 cases(12.4%).
