In a conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture method, cells are attached to the bottom of the culture dish and grow into a monolayer. These 2D culture methods are easy to handle, cost-effective, reproducible, and adaptable to growing many different types of cells. However, monolayer 2D cell culture conditions are far from those of natural tissue, indicating the need for a threedimensional (3D) culture system. Various methods, such as hanging drop, scaffolds, hydrogels, microfluid systems, and bioreactor systems, have been utilized for 3D cell culture. Recently, external physical stimulation-based 3D cell culture platforms, such as acoustic and magnetic forces, were introduced. Acoustic waves can establish acoustic radiation force, which can induce suspended objects to gather in the pressure node region and aggregate to form clusters. Magnetic targeting consists of two components, a magnetically responsive carrier and a magnetic field gradient source. In a magnetic-based 3D cell culture platform, cells are aggregated by changing the magnetic force. Magnetic fields can manipulate cells through two different methods: positive magnetophoresis and negative magnetophoresis. Positive magnetophoresis is a way of imparting magnetic properties to cells by labeling them with magnetic nanoparticles. Negative magnetophoresis is a label-free principle-based method. 3D cell structures, such as spheroids, 3D network structures, and cell sheets, have been successfully fabricated using this acoustic and magnetic stimuli-based 3D cell culture platform. Additionally, fabricated 3D cell structures showed enhanced cell behavior, such as differentiation potential and tissue regeneration. Therefore, physical stimuli-based 3D cell culture platforms could be promising tools for tissue engineering.
4.Generation of Proinflammatory Mediator of Intervertebral Disc Cells by Nicotine Stimulation.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental investigation in vitro. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between the degeneration of intervertebral disc cells, and low back pain induced by degeneration of intervertebral disc cells and increases in use of proinflammatory mediators via nicotine stimulation. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Smoking is a leading cause of degeneration of intervertebral disc cells and low back pain. According to the existing literature, nicotine, one of the main ingredients in cigarettes, causes the degeneration of intervertebral disk cells including decrease of glycoprotein through generation of carboxy-hemoglobin, vasoconstriction, and disability of fibrinolysis and changes of metabolism of nucleus pulposus cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Annulus fibrosus of intervertebral disc and knee joint cartilage were collected from pigs; these cells were acquired by gradual enzyme decomposition. Using Trypan blue, concentration and survival rate of cells were examined; cells were inserted on alginate beads for tertiary cultivation. Nicotine was then applied at 0, 50, 100, 200 and 300 nM, respectively, and the samples were cultivated for three, six and nine days, respectively. After collecting culture fluid, it was measured for interleukin(IL)-1beta, IL-6 and IL-8 with the ELISA Test. DNA of cells used for cultivation was quantitated and the amount of the resulting proinflammatory mediator was normalized. The results were then compared with the result of same study on cartilage of porcine knee joints. RESULTS: For changes of the inflammatory mediator based on the concentration of nicotine, in nicotine stimulation with low concentration of 50 nM and the control group, there was no significant change, while transient increases of inflammatory mediator showed in nicotine stimulation with concentrations of 100, 200 nM, respectively. There was not a significant increase of IL-1beta observed in all nicotine stimulation groups; these were the same results in porcine cartilage study. The level of IL-6 in 200, 300 nM nicotine concentration showed significant increases, respectively. The level of IL-8 in high dose nicotine stimulation groups also showed significant increases of DNA on the sixth day. And in porcine cartilage study group, significant changes were observed in 200, 300 nM, but the absolute value was lower than that of annulus fibrous cells group. CONCLUSION: Inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and IL-8 increased as the result of tertiary cultivation of annulus fibrosus cells of porcine intervertebral disk and nicotine stimulation. It is believed that the cells of the disc annulus are more sensitive than articular chondrocytes to nicotine stimulation. This may be the focus of future long-term studies effects of nicotine other inflammatory cytokines.

5.The Delinquency, Depression, and Anxiety Level on Timing on Expression of Secondary Sex Characteristics in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: This survey was attempted to examine the psychological significance, such as depression, anxiety and delinquent, of pubertal changes(expressions of secondary sexual characteristics) between student and delinqent group. METHOD: Data were collected through self-report questionnaire survey over a period 12 months. Subjects served for this study consisted of 248 adolescents including 90 delinquent adolescents and 158 student adolescents in Korea, sampled from Korean middle school population and delinquent adolescent population confined in juvenile corrective institutions. The SDS & SAS were used to evaluate the state of depression & anxiety in adolescents, respectively. RESULT: 1) The early-bloomer outnumbered late-bloomer in male delinquent adolescent. 2) There were the significant differences in first experiences of masturbation, expression of pubic hair, expression of axillary hair, expression of facial hair among secondary sexual characteristics between both groups. 3) In student adolescent, there was no significant difference in anxiety, depression level between early-bloomer and late-bloomer. 4) In male delinquent adolescent, late-bloomer was significantly more anxious, depressive than early-bloomer. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest the rapid pubertal changes during adolescence have effect on delinquency, depression, anxiety, especially male. Furthermore we may assume that this preliminary results will provide useful information in understanding the psychological aspect of adolescents.

6.Correlation of Alcohol intake with Suicide in Cases confirmed by Legal autopsy.

The purpose of this study is to provide a fundamental basis for defining measures to prevent suicide by specifically examining the relationship between suicide and alcohol consumption, which is thought to be a key factor in suicide. This study reviewed 426 suicide autopsies diagnosed by the department of forensic medicine, National Forensic Service (2007-2009) and analyzed the preliminary data on variables such as gender, age, and cause of death, with particular focus on the relationship between these variables and blood alcohol concentration. The relationship between each variable and alcohol consumption was as follows. First, alcohol was present in 48.4% of suicides. Second, blood alcohol concentration wrere twice as high in women as in men. Third, the relationship between suicide and alcohol consumption was greater in people in their 30s and 40s. The correlation between suicide and alcohol intake was evident this age group. These results are more specific and practical than the results of previous studies on the correlation between suicide and alcohol intake. The results of this study will help define measures to facilitate suicide prevention as an important reference and may eventually help lower the suicide rate in Korea.

7.Comparative Study of Nursing Students Consciousness of Biomedical Ethics and Attitudes toward Human Tissue Donation and Transplantation According to Participation in Anatomy Camp Program.

The purpose of this study was to identify the consciousness of biomedical ethics and attitudes toward human tissue donation and transplantation among participants and non-participants in the anatomy camp program. Data collection is made from one hundred and eighty-two students who were enrolled in one university nursing department, in B metropolitan city. Ninety-six students participated in the anatomy camp program, while eighty-six students did not participate in the anatomy camp program. The total mean scores of consciousness of biomedical ethics between participants (2.03/4) and non-participants (1.96/4) were significantly different (t=2.217, p≤.028). And the total mean scores of attitudes toward human tissue donation and transplantation between participants (3.49/5) and non-participants (3.31/5) were significantly different (t=4.579, p≤.000). There were statistically significant differences between two groups in sub-categories of consciousness of biomedical ethics: organ transplantation, artificial insemination.

Small bowel variceal bleeding is a rare cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, with clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic incidental findings to life-threatening conditions. The diagnosis and management of small bowel bleeding are challenging because of the localization of the lesion and the difficulty of the procedure. Trans-arterial embolization (TAE) is a secure and straightforward method for treating ectopic varices. On the other hand, there have been limited local studies on the outcomes of TAE for patients with small bowel variceal hemorrhage. This paper reports patients diagnosed with small bowel variceal bleeding and treated with TAE.
9.Annual Prevalence and Incidence of Schizophrenia and Similar Psychotic Disorders in the Republic of Korea: A National Health Insurance Data-Based Study

Objective:
We conducted this study to address the incidence and prevalence of schizophrenia and similar psychosis in South Korea with Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) database.
Methods:
We used HIRA database, which includes diagnostic information of nearly all Korean nationals to collect number of cases with diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizophrenia-similar disorders (SSP), including schizophreniform, acute/transient psychotic disorders, schizoaffective disorders, and other/unspecific nonorganic psychosis (ICD-10 codes F20/23/25/28/29) between 2010 and 2015. The annual prevalence and incidence were calculated using the population data from the Korean Statistical Office.
Results:
The 12-month prevalence of SSP of Korea between 2010 and 2015 were 0.48–0.66%. The 12-month prevalence of schizophrenia were 0.40–0.52%; The annual incidence rates (IR) of SSP between 2010 and 2015 were 118.8–148.7 per 100,000 person-year (PY). For schizophrenia, IR per 100,000 PY were 77.6–88.5 between 2010 and 2015.
Conclusion
The 12-month prevalence found in the present study was higher than that reported in community-based epidemiologic studies in South Korea but similar to those from other countries. The annual incidence of SSP and schizophrenia was found to steadily increase and was higher than that of other countries. The high incidence rate observed in the current study needs to be studied further.
10.Neonatal Screening Tests for Inherited Metabolic Disorders using Tandem Mass Spectrometry: Experience of a Clinical Laboratory in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the positive rates of screening tests for inherited metabolic disorders, set cutoff values, and report the actual status of internal quality controls in LabGenomics Clinical Laboratories by using LC-MS/MS system. METHODS: We use Agilent 1260 Infinity HPLC System (Agilent Technologies, USA) for liquid chromatography, and API 2000 (AB Sciex, Canada) for MS/MS system. We set up screening tests for 55 diseases, which include metabolic disorders of 25 amino acids, 16 organic acids, and 14 fatty acids. RESULTS: We determined the analyte cutoff values as 99.9 or 0.1 percentiles in 15,000 newborn samples. The total number of samples tested from January 2012 to September 2014 was 119,948; of these, 6,681 were repeated. Of the repeated samples, 713 were presumed to be positive in the screening tests. Repeat screening with newly obtained dried blood spot specimens was recommended for these 713 samples and 600 specimens were obtained. Thus, the recall rate was 0.5% (600/119,948) for all samples and 84.2% (600/713) for the samples presumed to be positive in the screening tests. About 70 samples, that is, 0.06% of the total samples and 11.7% of the "reobtained" samples, again tested positive; we recommended confirmatory tests for these samples. CONCLUSIONS: We have presented data on the status of neonatal screening tests for inherited metabolic disorders using LC-MS/MS, including positive rates and recall rates of screening tests, set up cutoff values and reported the actual status of internal quality controls in a clinical laboratory in Korea.
