The propolis, honey bee hive product, is a folk medicine for treating various ailrnents and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is an extract of propolis. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ethanol extracted propolis (EEP) or CAPE on the tumorigenesis, pulmonary metastases, and proliferation and activity of splenocytes and macrophages in ICR mice. EEP at 0.2, 2 or 20mg/ml applied topically on the back of each mice 30 minutes before application of 7,12-dimethylbenz (a)anthracene and 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate inhibited the number of tumors per mouse by 61, 75 or 100%, respectively. ...continue...

3.RECONSTRUCTION OF AN ANAL SPHINCTER USING THE GLUTEUS MAXIMUS MUSCLE.

Anal incontinence following pelvic trauma, surgery, or neurologic disorders has significant medical and social implication. Both Chetwood in 1902 and Bistom in 1944 utilized coccygeal origin portion of the gluteus maximus muscle for the anal sphincter reconstruction. The gluteus maximus muscle is a broad, fan-shaped muscle with a wide origin from the ilium sacrum and coccyx and a narrow insertion along the iliotibial band of the lateral femur. Its blood supply is from the inferior gluteal artery and its innervation is from L-5, S-1 roots by means of the inferior gluteal nerve Incisions are placed at the inferior border of the ischial tuberosity. Subcutaneous tunnels are created about the rectum and gluteal and perirectal incisions. Two overacting slings are being created Their opposing pull creates sphincter or valve effect about the distal rectum. We have experienced 2 cases of irregular, deep soft tissue defects of the perianal region requiring muscle coverage with the gluteus maximus muscle overlapping slings. We think the use of the gluteus maximus muscle is one of the most useful method for reconstruction of the anal sphincter mechanism.

4.A Case of Steven-Johnson Syndroe Associated with Cholestatic Hepatitis.

A 12-year-old boy developed cholestatic hepatitis with Steven-Johnson syndrome following the use of amoxicillin. The skin lesion and general condition were improved over 2 weeks, but jaundice was gradually aggrevated. We performed liver biopsy, on 30th hospital day, which showed cholestatic hepatitis. The patient improved gradually and liver function was normalized 5 months later.

5.Treatment of Displaced Fractures of the Femoral Neck by Muscle-Pedicle Bone Graft and Internal Fixation

The major blood supply to the femoral head is probably damaged by the fracture of the femoral neck especially when it is a displaced fracture. Complications such as delayed or nonuion of the fracture and avascular necrosis of the femoral head are common. Revascularization after reduction and internal fixation appears to be a slow process and in many patients late segmental collapse occurs. Various techniques have been proposed to restore the blood supply or to improve the circulation to the femoral head. Hereby we performed internal fixation and an autogenous muscle-bone pedicle graft composed of the quadriceps femoris muscle in 3 cases of old, neglected displaced femoral neck fracture. The results seemed to be good in regard to bony union in all 3 cases but it would be needed further follow up study for developing of any avascular necrosis.

7.Value of Bone Scan in Addition to F-18 FDG PET/CT and Characteristics of Discordant Lesions between F-18 FDG PET/CT and Bone Scan in the Spinal Bony Metastasis.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to evaluate spinal bony metastasis which could be missed on an F-18 FDG PET/CT (FDG PET/CT) alone, and to characterize discordant metastatic lesions between FDG PET/CT and bone scan. MATERIAL AND METHODS: FDG PET/CT and bone scans of 43 patients with spinal bony metastasis were analyzed retrospectively. A McNemar test was performed comparing the FDG PET/CT alone to the FDG PET/CT plus bone scan in the spinal bony metastases. A one-way chi-square test was performed to characterize the metastases that were missed on the FDG PET/CT alone. To evaluate discordant lesions between FDG PET/CT and bone scan, we performed logistic regression analyses. The independent variables were sites (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar), size (large and small), and maximum SUVs, and the dependant variable was bone scan uptake (positive and negative MDP uptake). RESULTS: A significant difference was found between the FDG PET/CT alone and the FDG PET/CT combined with the bone scan (p<0.01). Using the FDG PET/CT only, diffuse osteoblastic metastasis was missed with a significantly higher frequency (p=0.04). In the univariate analysis, cervical vertebra and small size were related to negative MDP uptake, and thoracic vertebra and large size were related to positive MDP uptake. However, in the multivariate analysis, only the large size was related to positive MDP uptake. CONCLUSION: A bone scan in addition to the FDG PET/CT increased the ability to evaluate spinal bony metastases, especially for diffuse osteoblastic metastasis. Large metastasis was related to positive bone scan uptake in spinal bony metastasis.

8.The Development of the Shunt Guiding Kit for the Proper Positioning of the Proximal Shunt Catheter to the Lateral Ventricle in the Ventriculo-Peritoneal Shunt Operation.

Object: To treat hydrocephalus by ventriculo-peritoneal shunt operation, the correct positioning of the proximal catheter in the ventricle is very important. The purpose of this study was to develop the "shunt guiding kit" for the proper positioning of the proximal shunt catheter to the ventricle in the ventriculo-peritoneal shunt operation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The "shunt guiding kit" is made of tungsten alloy and it consists of one frame, two screws and one guider. Through the guider, the proximal shunt catheter operates by mechanically coupling the posterior burr hole to the anterior target point. RESULTS: We have treated three hydrocephalus patients with use of the "shunt guiding kit", and achieved good location of proximal shunt catheters. CONCLUSION: We developed the "shunt guiding kit" for the proper positioning of the proximal shunt catheter to the ventricle, and this would be very useful for preventing ventriculo-peritoneal shunt malfunction and preventing possible brain injury during the procedures.

9.In vitro study on the adherence and penetration of candida albicans into denture soft lining materials.

Purpose: Colonization of denture soft lining materials by Candida albicans can result in clinical problem, and deterioration of the materials. This study aimed to compare the retention and penetration of C. albicans into four denture soft lining materials commonly used. Materials and methods: Four denture soft lining materials(Coe-comfort., Coe-soft., GC soft liner., and Tissue conditioner.) discs were prepared to glass slide and dental stone. Adherence of yeast to surfaces was monitored after one hour incubation of standardized washed cell suspension with test disc surfaces. Adherent cells stained with acridine orange were counted fluorescence microscopy. Penetration of yeast into materials bonded with acrylic resin after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days incubation was observed through sections stained using acridine orange and estimated to quantitative analysis using radioisotope. Results: There was statistical significance in cell numbers between smooth and rough surfaces(p<0.05). Higher numbers of cells were observed on rough surfaces. There was statistical significance in adherent cell numbers into smooth and rough surfaces individually(p<0.05). According to the increase of incubation periods, the cells penetrated into denture soft lining materials were shown to increase. The differences among all kinds of soft liner were statistically significant(p<0.05),and the largest number of cells penetrated into soft liners was observed in the Coe-soft. Conclusion: Initial adherence and penetration of yeast into denture soft lining materials has been influenced by surface roughness and chemical composition of them. The selection of appropriate materials and their fabrication may promote clinical performance.

10.Automatic Attentional Bias in Individuals with Somatization Tendencies : An Event-Related Potential Study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the automatic attentional bias to disease/body-related stimuli in individuals exhibiting somatization tendencies using Event-Related Potential (ERP). METHODS: The participants were classified according to somatization and control groups based on the somatization symptom scales of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and Somatosensory Amplification Scale scores. ERP were recorded in the somatization and control groups while participants were performing the task to respond with neutral (standard stimuli) or disease/body-related words (target stimuli). We compared N100, P200, and P300 ERP components between the two groups. RESULTS: In the somatization group, the reaction times to disease/body-related words were faster than for neutral words. In ERP analysis, N100 to standard stimuli was not observed in the somatization group. The somatization group showed higher P200 and P300 amplitudes to target stimuli than standard stimuli. On the contrary, in the control group, no difference in P200 and P300 amplitudes was observed between target and standard stimuli. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that individuals exhibiting somatization tendencies have automatic attentional bias to disease/body-related stimuli and interpret disease/body-related stimuli as self-relevant stimuli.
