3.Predictors Affecting the Elderly’s Use of Emergency Medical Services
Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives 2020;11(4):209-215
Elderly adults are the demographic most likely to utilize emergency medical services (EMS). This study aimed to examine the difference in EMS utilization in subgroups of the elderly population by assessing the predictors for using EMS. Using both descriptive and logistic regression analyses, this study analyses data from the 2014 Korean Health Panel Survey ( It was observed that certain predisposing factors such as age, sex, and marital status were significant predictors of EMS utilization. However, differences in EMS need do not fully account for the original differences observed between subgroups of elderly Koreans. While health status and disability were important predictors of elderly Koreans using EMS, place of residence did not account for subgroup differences. Nonetheless, place of residence remained particularly important predictors of EMS utilization for the elderly. Emergency needs and resource availability are 2 main determinants for elderly Koreans using EMS. In addition, it was observed that the demographic subgroup profile of unmarried/divorced/separated/widowed men who were aged 75 and older was least likely to utilize EMS. Improving their resource availability to meet their EMS needs should be a top priority for national policy making to narrow elderly population subgroup differences.

Korean Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases 2014;21(3):167-173
PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the changes in the outbreak of acute gastroenteritis, rotavirus gastroenteritis after the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine in Korea. METHODS: The current study investigated the number of inpatients in the pediatric ward of Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital during the periods of 2005-2006 and 2011-2012. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 2,840 patients <5 years of age who were hospitalized at Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital in these time periods. RESULTS: When we compared 2 separate sets of data from before (2005-2006) and after (2011-2012) vaccine introduction, there were statistically significant decreases in the number of patients who were hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis across all of the groups of patients <5 years of age except those <2 months of age. The number of patients with rotavirus gastroenteritis in all age groups declined except for children <2 months of age and those 2-5 months of age. CONCLUSION: These results show that after the introduction of a rotavirus vaccine in Korea, the incidence of rotavirus gastroenteritis decreased in 6-59-month-old patients hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis.

10.Treatment of Complicated Femoral Neck Fractures in Children by Quadratus Femoris Muscle Pedicle Bone Graft: A Preliminary Report of 4 Cases
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1989;24(3):961-969
The femoral neck fractures in children remain an unsolved problem because of lack of the optimal treatment followed by unpredictable, serious complications. Since the first trial of muscle pedicle bone graft by Judet(1962), Meyers et al(1973) refined and promoted this method for nonunion and as a primary procedure, and Baksi(1983, 1986) expanded its indication to post-traumatic avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Two cases of avascular necrosis and Two nonunion cases treated by quadratus femoris muscle pedicle bone graft at the Chonbuk National University Hospital from Jan. 1986 to Jun. 1988 were reported. The age of the patients varied from 6 to 16 years ; Follow-up ranged 6 to 29 months ; all cases were displaced transcervical fracture. In according to Ratliffs assessment, three cases showed satisfsctory results and one poor.
