Hemangiopericytoma is a rather uncommon neoplasm composed mainly of cells derived from the vascular pericytes of Zimmermann, which are normally found in close apposition to the endothelial cells of capillaries and postcapillary venules. Authors studied a case in which primary hemangiopericytoma located in the left orbit of a 54-year-old woman. Review of the literatures about incidence, clinical symptoms, histological features and biological behavior of the orbital hemangiopericytoma was presented.

Malignant transformation of benign cystic teratomas of the ovary is rare, with an incidence rate of 1-3%. The most common malignancy associated with benign cystic teratoma of the ovary is squamous cell carcinoma, which represents 90% of malignant transformations, followed by adenocarcinoma and carcinoid. Primary malignant neuroectodermal tumor in a mature cystic teratoma is extremely rare and microscopically can be subclassified as differentiated, primitive, and anaplatic. We experienced a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) associated with mature cystic teratoma of the ovary in a 11-year-old girl. Grossly, the ovary was a unilocular cyst which contained sebum material and disclosed several large, yellow to gray-tan polypoid excresences attached to the inner cystic wall. Except a large, fish-flesh, soft mass, the other polypoid masses were covered with sebum and contained small pieces of cartilage and tooth, and microscopically represented as mature teratoma. The large, fish-flesh, soft mass disclosed sheets and lobules of closely packed small cells with thin fibrovascular septa, which frequently replacing and encroaching the mature cystic teratoma. The small tumor cells were uniform and made up of round to oval nuclei with coarse chromatin and prominent nucleoli, very similar to those of PNET of the central nervous system.

PURPOSE: We studied to know the influence of respiratory virus and atopic characteristics on recurrence of virus-induced wheezing in children under 3 years of age. METHODS: Between March 2006 and February 2009, 340 children who were hospitalized with symptoms of sudden onset of dyspnea, cough and wheezing after symptoms of acute upper respiratory tract infection and detected specific respiratory viruses by multiplex RT-PCR were enrolled. The data were analyzed according to age (< or =6, 7-12, 13-24, and 25-36 months) as well as previous wheezing episodes (first or recurrent episode). Respiratory viruses and atopic characteristics were compared among individual groups. RESULTS: The 3 commonly identified viruses were RSV (62.4%), PIV (15.6%) and RV (11.8%). PIV and RV were significantly associated with recurrence, but RSV was not significantly associated with recurrence. Food sensitization, aeroallergen sensitization, elevation of total IgE, history of atopic dermatitis and history of parent asthma were significantly associated with the recurrent episode, but serum eosinophil and passive smoking were not significantly associated with the recurrent episode. CONCLUSION: These findings show that specific respiratory viruses can have different influence on recurrence and that atopy may be a risk factor for recurrence of wheezing, in children under 3 years of age with virus-induced wheezing.

We report a case of liposarcoma with osteosarcomatous dedifferentiation of the chest wall in a 58-year-old man, which had been initially mistaken as myositis ossificans. CT and MRI demonstrated a soft tissue mass consisting of two components: a non-lipomatous area with amorphous calcification/ossification and a well-encapsulated fatty component. Based on local excision in the non-lipomatous area, myositis ossificans was initially diagnosed. As the mass was gradually enlarging, however, wide excision including the fatty component was performed and histological assessment revealed lipoma-like, well-differentiated liposarcoma with high-grade osteosarcomatous dedifferentiation. Here, we describe the radiological-pathological features of this rare neoplasm.

PURPOSE: We analyzed time series changes in cataract surgeries in Korea, and provide basic data to enhance the efficiency of medical services for cataract surgery. METHODS: Among cataract surgery statistics registered in the Korean National Health Insurance Cooperation from 2006 to 2012, we used data regarding the number of patients and operations and the number of patients and operations per 100,000 people. We analyzed various time series changes, including differences by sex and age. RESULTS: The total numbers of patients from 2006 to 2012 by year were 207,370; 228,170; 250,289; 268,548; 289,867; 308,111; and 302,182, respectively. The total numbers of operations from 2006 to 2012 by year were 272,920; 305,807; 338,332; 365,874; 398,338; 428,158; and 420,905, respectively. The number of patients and operations per 100,000 people were highest in men 80 to 84 years old and women 75 to 79 years old. Comparing the number of operations in 2006 and after, the patient age group with the highest increase rate changed from over 85 years old to 75–79 years old since 2010 in men and from over 85 years old to 50–54 years old since 2009 in women. For each year investigated, the number of operations performed was higher than the number of patients who received operations. CONCLUSIONS: Over the study period, the number of cataract surgeries increased, while the age of cataract patients decreased. Additionally, the number of cataract-related surgeries increased in relation to the number of patients.
