Lymphomatous involvement of the heart, occurring at initial diagnosis and presentation, is extremely rare. We report here a case of 58 year old man who presented with generalized edema, pericardial effusion, and a large right atrial mass detected by transesophageal echocardiography. There is no other evidence of disseminated lymphoma in this patient. Tumor removal and pulmonary embolectomy was done. Pathologically, the mass was malignant lymphoma, diffuse large cell type. Unfortunately, we have no chance to perform the intensive chemotherapy. The patient discharged in moribund state.

Nickel compounds are carcinogenic to human and are potent inducers of kidney and lung tumors in experimental animals. In this study, the effects of nickel(II) acetate on apoptosis, cell cycle and bcl2 expression in normal rat kidney (NRK- 52E) cells were investigated. Nickel(II) induced apoptosis in NRK-52E cells as demonstrated by DNA laddering. Apparent DNA laddering was observed in cells treated with 480 microM for 48 hr. In the flow cytometric analysis using propidium iodide fluorescence, an increase of cell proportion in G2/M phase was shown in cells exposed to at least 320 microM of nickel(II) acetate, from 7.7% for 0 microM of nickel(II) to 16.5% for 480 microM of nickel(II) acetate. Induction of apoptotic cell death by nickel(II) was accompanied by reduction of bcl2 protein expression, while the level of p53 protein was not changed. Taken together, our data indicate that nickel(II)-induced apoptosis in NRK-52E cells is accompanied by G2/M cell cycle arrest, regardless of p53 function, and that bcl2-mediated signaling pathway may be involved in positive regulation of nickel(II)-induced apoptotic cell death in NRK-52E cells.

Trichofolliculoma is an uncommon follicular hamartoma of hair follicle tissue, typically occurring on the face and skin of the head and neck and appearing as papules or nodules. Dents in the central portion and immature white hair may be observed. Asymptomatically, trichofolliculoma occurs at any age but rather frequently in adults in many cases. A 47-year-old man presented a right ear canal mass, which had not been treated for 12 years. The tumor began to increase its size 4 years ago. A little red bump blocked the entrance of the right external auditory canal and there was a little dinge at the center of bump with growing black hair. This case was first reported in our country. Thus, we report this rare case with a review of the literature.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma has specific clinical and pathologic features. The most common site MALT lymphomas is the stomach; however, it can also occur in other organs, such as the salivary glands. MALT lymphoma is rare, but its prognosis is good. A 32-year-old man visited Konyang university hospital with parotid mass. Superficial partial parotidectomy was performed to exclude lymphoid neoplasms. IgH gene rearrangement analysis of the surgical specimen led to the diagnosis of MALT lymphoma. The patient underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, positron emission tomography-computed tomography, and whole-body bone scan. Regional or distant metastasis was not observed on staging workup. The patient underwent postoperative radiation therapy, there has been no recurrence of MALT lymphoma to date. Here, we report this rare case of parotid MALT lymphoma that was treated with surgery and postoperative radiation therapy.

We aimed to estimate the effects of various risk factors on hearing level in Korean adults, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We examined data from 13,369 participants collected between 2009 and 2011. Average hearing thresholds at low (0.5, 1, and 2 kHz) and high frequencies (3, 4, and 6 kHz), were investigated in accordance with various known risk factors via multiple regression analysis featuring complex sampling. We additionally evaluated data from 4,810 participants who completed a questionnaire concerned with different types of noise exposure. Low body mass index, absence of hyperlipidemia, history of diabetes mellitus, low incomes, low educational status, and smoking were associated with elevated low frequency hearing thresholds. In addition, male sex, low body mass index, absence of hyperlipidemia, low income, low educational status, smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption were associated with elevated high frequency hearing thresholds. Participants with a history of earphone use in noisy circumstances demonstrated hearing thresholds which were 1.024 dB (95% CI: 0.176 to 1.871; P = 0.018) higher, at low-frequencies, compared to participants without a history of earphone use. Our study suggests that low BMI, absence of hyperlipidemia, low household income, and low educational status are related with hearing loss in Korean adults. Male sex, smoking, and heavy alcohol use are related with high frequency hearing loss. A history of earphone use in noisy circumstances is also related with hearing loss.
