Korean Journal of Pathology 1992;26(1):96-98
Basaloid-squamous carcinoma of the esophagus is rare and similiar to the solid type of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland. The origin of this tumor is unknown. The tumor was located in the lower third of the esophagus. The case of basaloid-squamous carcinoma consisted of submucosal tumor showing carcinoma with a basaloid pattern and focal squamous differentiation associated with squamous cell carcinoma or carcinoma in situ of the esophageal mucosa. A few submucosal tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin.

Pityriasis rotunda is characterized by perfectly circular to oval brownish scaly patch on the trunk and extremities. This disease is considered to be a form of acquired ichtkyosis of unknown etiology and develops usually in association with certain systemic diseases, such as tuberculosis, malignant neoplasrn, leprosy, ovarian cyst and uterine myoma etc, We experienced 2 cases of pityriasis rotunda on the abdomen, chest and back associated with liver cirrhosis in 66 year old man 43 year old woman and clinical presentation was made with review of related literatures.

6.Serum Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Levels in Syphilis Patients.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1984;22(2):220-225
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase, hydrolyzes angiotensin I to the active angiotensin g and also inactivates bradykinin. Activity of ACE was first identified in plasrna by Skeggs et al in 1956. In 1975 Lieberman first reported elevation of serum ACE level in patients with active sarcoidosis and suggested clinical application of the assay to confirm a diagnosis of sarcoidosis and to serve as a guide for therapy. The author studied the serurn ACE levels in 21 syphilitic patients (11 men, 10 women) who showed positive responses in both VDRL and TPHA tests and 20 normal healthy controls (7 men, 13 women) by the spectrophotometric method described by Lieberrnan who modified Cushman and Cheungs method. Comparative studies of ACE levels in syphilitic group with normal control group and relationship among the age, sex and treatment were also conducted. The results were summarized as follows : Ages of the syphilitic patients and normal healthy control group ranged from 18 to 51 years (27 1+-8 98 years) and from 14 to 49 years (28 4+9 08 years) respectively. The mean serum ACE level in syphilitic patients was ll 33+-3 25 p/ml, which was significantly higher than that of normal healthy control group, 6 39+-2 RR p/ml, (p<0001) Of the 21 syphilitic patients, 15(71 4%) had ACE activity higher than the upper limit of normal (mean+1SD). There was no significant correlation between age and serum ACE level. -countinue-

BACKGROUND: Oncogenes and EGF-Receptor(EGFR) may be involved n different stages of the multistep carcinogenesis process. A specific pattern of karyotypic abnormalities in solid tumors can be detected by cytogenetic methods. OBJECTIVE: This study is intnded to observe the cytomolecular kiologic chracterization of c-myc, erb B and EGFR genes in squasnous cell carcinoma(SCC) of the skin and cervix. METHODS: We have eytogenet, ically examined the short-term culturs from SCC. The rearrangement, amplification or expressi.on of erb B, c-myc, and EGFR genes were studied by Southern blot, analysis of genomic DNA and by slot blot analysis of tota! RNA extracted from biopsies of normal skin and SCC tissues. EGFR expression was examined immunohistochemially using monoclonal antibodies and the localizat, ion of the c-myc oncogene mRNA by in situ hybridization. RESULTS: A remarkably structural aberration was del 6(q21-qter) counted 20 metaphases among 28 metaphases ana1yzed. In nunierical aberration, all chromosomes were lost or gained randomly. Amenploid including triploid and tetraploid were observed in 8 metaphases, 6 tumor cells contained marker chromosome. In Southern blot analysis, rearrangement and amglificaton of EGFR in primary squamous cell carcinoma of cervix uteri and skin respectively. In slot blot analysis, the levels of c-myc, erb B and EGFR mRNA increaaed respectively 3.5, 2.5 and 2.8 times in SCC when compared to normal tissues. In immunoperoxidase stain, EGFR was present, in SCC where keratinocytes with strong cyto-plasmic staining but no membr, line labelling, where as in normal skin the were primarily present in t,he membrane and cytoplasm of basal cells. In situ hybridization with c-myc cDNAs allowed detection of grains representative of biotin labelled cDNA-mRNA hybrids in the frozden section of SCC tissues. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that specific patterns of karyotypir abnormalites, rearrangement, or amplification of EGFR gene, and overexpression of oncogenes and EGFR gene may be associated with the carcinogenesis of SCC.

Korean Journal of Urology 2003;44(12):1238-1242
PURPOSE: Prostaglandin levels in the urinary bladder can be affected by lesions of the bladder. Also, this change can be noted in the urine. This study investigated the change in urinary prostaglandin in female patients with overactive bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study groups included 80 female patients with overactive bladder and 15 healthy female controls. Evaluation included history taking, urinalysis, voiding diary and urodynamics. The urinary concentrations of prostaglandin E2(PGE2) and prostaglandin F2alpha(PGF2alpha) in voided urine were analyzed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and these results were compared with the control group. RESULTS: From an analysis of the voiding history, the most common complaint was urgency. Also, the capacity for first voiding sense and maximal capacity were decreased in patients from the urodynamic study. Bladder instabilities were noted in 29 patients. The urinary concentrations of PGE2 and PGF2alpha were significantly increased in the patient group compared with the control group. PGE2 level in patients was proportional to the capacity for first voiding sense and maximal capacity. However, PGF2alpha was not correlated with clinical symptoms or measurements in urodynamic studies. CONCLUSIONS: PGE2 and PGF2alpha may play a role in lower urinary tract symptoms, and their changes can be detected in urine sample. Therefore, changes in urinary prostaglandin level may be a useful marker to evaluate lower urinary tract symptoms.
