The complications of Salter's innominate osteotomy in the treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip were avascular necrosis of the femoral head, hematoma, rotation of distal pelvic fragment, infection, fracture of femoral shaft and redislocation. Among them the causes of redislocation were technical failure, immobilization failure and absorption the bone graft, etc. We experienced a case of redislocation after open reduction and Salter s innominate osteotomy in congenital dislocation of the hip which was induced by a foreign body reaction to the suture material.

In 1961, Salter had devised the innominate osteotomy in treating C.D.H, which has been one of the most popular methods in these days. 14 hips with 12 patients who have been admitted and received Salters innominate osteotomy in the department of orthopaedic surgery, National Medical Center, from Feb. 1974 to Dec. 1976, were evaluated as for the results. Clinical analysis and follow-up study were carried out in 14 hips with C.D.H. and the following results were obtained. The mean age of the cases was 34 months, and sex preponderance of female to male was 11: 1. The ratio of left to right was not significantly different. 2 cases of complication out of 12 cases was found; redislocation and subluxaiton respectively. The age of first detection of C.D.H., was surprisingly late around 18 months old. In addition, approximately 12 months has elapsed between the first detection of C.D.H. and the first consultation to doctor. Assesment of the result was carried out by Severine and Macays method respectively; Radiological evaluation was as followings: (Severine) Excellent: 4, Good: 8, Fair: 1, Poor: 1. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Influenza virus are the most common pathogen for causing severe upper respiratory infection in all age groups. A multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been developed to detect and subtype influenza A (H3N2 and H1N1), B virus and RSV simultaneously in one tube reaction. Amplification with primers derived from conserved sequences within the nucleocapsid for RSV and hemagglutinin subunit for Influenza A (H3N2 and H1N1) and B viruses yielded a 384 bp, a 300 bp, a 236 bp and a 151 bp, respectively. Assay specificity was confirmed by pulse field gel electrophoresis and autosequencing method. Assay sensitivity was 3 PFU/ml of RSV, 22 PFU/ml, 45 PFU/ml of Influenza type A (H3N2 and H1N1) and 6.6 PFU/ml of Influenza B virus by plaque assay. A rapid and sensitive detection method of a one-tube with multiplex RT-PCR capable of identifying more than one viral template as well as synchronizing reverse transcription and PCR had the potential to produce considerable savings of time and cost effectiveness in the diagnostic laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Hypersalivation can be a troublesome side effect of clozapine, limiting its usefulness in the management some cases of schizophrenia. But the pharmacodynamic basis of clozapine-induced hypersalivation remains obscure. Object : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the alpha2-adrenergic agonist clonidine on clozapin-induced hypersalivation in the patients who were receiving clozapine. METHOD: Twenty one schizophrenic inpatients on clozapine participated in the study. The amount of saliva was measur on the 7th day at 8pm after starting clozapine treatment. Of them, 15 patients who had experienced hypersalivation treated with 0.1mg/day of clonidine. RESULT: Of 21 schizophrenic patients treated with clozapine in the psychiatric inpatients clinic, 15(71.4%) complain hypervalivation. After clonidine treatment, mean salivary flow-rate was decreased significantly in these patients. CONCLUSION: Clozapine-induced hypersalivation could be decreased by administration of alpha2-adrenergic agonist clonidine are compliance could be improved. Also our study supports the notion that increased adrenergic tone contributes to clozapine induce hypersalivation.

PURPOSE: The reliability and validity of a Korean version of the Obsessive-Compulsive-Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) was examined in non-clinical student samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Korean version of OCI-R was administered to a total of 228 Korean college students. The Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were administered to 228 students. RESULTS: The total and each of subscale of the Korean OCI-R demonstrated excellent internal consistency, good test-retest reliability, moderate convergent validity and good divergent validity. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the Korean version of the OCI-R has strong psychometric properties as the original version.

BACKGROUND : Diabetes is an independent risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein is considered to be an important step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of in vivo LDL oxidation in diabetic patients by measuring antibody against oxidized LDL. METHODS : Plasma samples from 64 NIDDM patients and 30 normal controls were tested for antibody against oxidized LDL by two ELISA methods and for plasma lipid hydroperoxides by the ferrous oxidation with xylenol orange (FOX II) assay. In the first ELISA, antibody levels were estimated as the difference in binding to copperoxidized LDL between untreated plasma and plasma preabsorbed with oxidized LDL. In the second ELISA, antibody levels were estimated as the ratio of IgG binding to copper-oxidized LDL to native LDL. RESULTS : There was no significant difference in levels of antibodies to copper-oxidized LDL between NIDDM patients and normal controls with both ELISA methods. There was also no significant difference in levels of antibodies to copper-oxidized LDL between NIDDM patients with ischemic heart disease (n=24) and NIDDM patients without ischemic heart disease (n=40). Plasma lipid hydroperoxides in the diabetic group were significantly higher than in the control. CONCLUSION : The present study shows that antibodies to copper-oxidized LDL are not significantly raised in our NIDDM patients. Further study to measure antibodies to malondialdehydeLDL would be necessary.
