OBJECTIVE: This research was performed to evaluate the relation clinical symptoms and P300 in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: 25 patients with schizophenia by DSM-IV in Soonchunhyang Chunan University hospital were participated. Clinical symptoms were checked by BPRS (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale) and PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale). Auditory event related potentials P300 components were obtained with "Oddball paradigm". RESULTS: P300 in T 3 was smaller and more delayed than T 4 in patients with schizophrenia. Especially, P300 on T 3 were correlated with BPRS scores and negative symptoms scores of PANSS, which were also correlated with P300 on Fz. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that P300 on frontal and left temporal lobe reflect clinical symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

PURPOSE: Feminizing genitoplasty is the surgical management after female gender assignment for intersex patients. The surgical outcome and complications of 20 cases of feminizing genitoplasty were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 1988 and December 2003, 20 patients surgically treated by feminizing genitoplasty, were retrospectively reviewed. The mean ages at the time of diagnosis and surgical treatment were 6.25 and 7.35 years, respectively. The preoperative evaluations included history taking, physical examination, and chromosomal, hormonal, and radiological studies. All patients underwent feminizing genitoplasty, including at least one of clitoral reconstruction, vaginoplasty or labial reconstruction. The 20 patients were analyzed according to their karyotype, phenotype, gender of rearing, ages at diagnosis and operation, surgical procedures, complications and follow up. RESULTS: Of the 20 cases, there were 10 female pseudohermaphroditism, 6 male pseudo- hermaphroditism, 3 gonadal dysgenesis, and 1 Mayer- Rokitanski-Kuster syndrome. Within these cases, 14, 10 and 9 clitoral reconstructions, vaginoplasties and labial reconstructions were performed. The streak gonad was removed in all patients with gonadal dysgenesis. Postoperative cosmetic and functional effects were successful, with few complications. CONCLUSIONS: Considering our surgical outcomes, feminizing genitoplasty for intersex patients, who are determined to a female gender assignment, is a good surgical procedure.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the effects of opioids antagonist naltrexone and serotonin-dopamine recepter antagonist olanzapine on the reduction of alcohol consumption level of alcohol intake reinforced C57BL-6 type rat. METHODS: Small amount of alcohol and water were applied to the 28 rats for 2 hours per day during 30 days. On the 31th day, The rats were divided into four groups and given different medications by intraabdominal route 30 minutes before the alcohol consumption. For the next 35 days, the 3 subject group were applied with naltrexone 5mg/kg, olanzapine 0.1mg/kg and olanzapine 1.0mg/kg and the control group with distilled water everyday. RESULTS: In contrast to control group, naltrexone 5mg/kg group showed a significant reduction of alcohol consumption after 4 weeks. Olanzapine 0.1mg/kg group showed a decrease of alcohol consumption from 2 to 5 week period. Although olanzapine 1mg/kg group showed a momentary decrease of the consumption during the 2nd and 3rd weeks, the group did not show significant decrease afterwards. Olanzapine 0.1mg/kg was more effective in reducing the alcohol consumption than olanzapine 1mg/kg. However, it is not significantly more effective compared to the naltrexone 5mg/kg in reducing the alcohol consumption of the reinforced rats' alcohol intake. CONCLUSION: This results suggest that the low dose of olanzapine as well as naltrexone reduce the alcohol intake in C57BL-6 type rats.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) an lateral epicondylitis of the elbow. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with refractory lateral epicondylitis were treated with shock waves. The patients were evaluated by assessing of pain using visual analog scale (VAS) and a simple elbow test (SET). Overall clinical outcomes were evaluated using Roles and Maudsley scores at 12 months after ESWT. RESULTS: Significant symptom improvement were observed in 20 (83%) patients at the 12 months follow up according to the Roles and Maudesley scores. Average SET and VAS scores were also significantly improved after ESWT (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that shock waves therapy could be considered as an effective and noninvasive treatment modality for refractory lateral epicondylitis of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: The common allergens for patients with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) have changed with the passage of time. Ammoniated mercury was the most common allergen in the 1980s, but it has been replaced by nickel sulphate. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to delineate the recent alterations of common allergens of Korean ACD patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical recordings of the patients who were diagnosed with ACD and we performed patch tests on these patients from July 2005 to May 2008. A total of 676 patients were enrolled in this study and the medical records included the patients' age and gender, the site of ACD, the clinical pictures and the results of a Korean standard series of patch tests. RESULTS: The male to female ratio was 1.62 and the mean age of onset was 41.2+/-16.5 years. The most common ages of the ACD patients were the forties for males and the thirties for females. The most prevalent sites for ACD were the face, scalp and hands in males, while those for females were the face, hands and arms in order of frequency, respectively. The most common allergens were nickel sulfate for females and mercury ammonium chloride for males. CONCLUSION: For ACD, the relative proportion of male patients has recently been markedly enlarged. This phenomenon might be related to the increased use of men's cosmetic products, and the market for these products had tremendously expanded during the last decade.

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by fingernail dysplasia, hypoplastic or absent patellae, dislocation of the radial head, and bony protuberances of the iliae, also known as iliac horns. It results from a heterogenous loss of function or mutations in the transcription factor (LMX1b). Herein, we report a rare case of nail-patella syndrome in an 18 month-old female.

PURPOSE: In recent years, laser surgery has been widely used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A thulium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Tm:YAG) laser was recently introduced for BPH surgery. We compared the effectiveness and safety of Tm:YAG laser vaporesection of the prostate (ThuVaRP) with that of bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2012, 86 patients underwent surgical treatment for symptomatic BPH by a single surgeon. We retrospectively analyzed and compared the medical records of 43 patients who underwent ThuVaRP and 43 patients who underwent bipolar TURP. All patients were assessed by using the International Prostate Symptom Score, transrectal ultrasonography, the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, uroflowmetry, and postvoid residual volume before and 1 month after surgery. All complications were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: ThuVaRP was superior to TURP in catheterization time (p<0.001) and length of hospital stay (p<0.001). However, operation time was longer with ThuVaRP than with TURP (p<0.001). In patients with a large prostate (>50 g), operation time was much longer with ThuVaRP. One month after surgery, the decrease in PSA was greater (p=0.045) with ThuVaRP than with TURP, and the increase in maximal urine flow rate was greater (p<0.001) with ThuVaRP than with TURP. The postoperative complication transient urinary incontinence was significantly different between the ThuVaRP group (nine cases, 20.9%) and the TURP group (two cases, 4.7%). Other complications were comparable between groups. CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness and safety of ThuVaRP and TURP were comparable. ThuVaRP is a promising alternative surgical technique to TURP for BPH.
