To evaluate the relationship between the expression of CA 125, CA 19-9, and CA 15-3 and ovarian epithelial tumors, immunohistochemical stainings were performed and analyzed to the types of tumor, and the degree o malignancy and differentiation in the total 42 cases. The results were summarized as follows: 1) The expression of CA 19-9 and CA 15-3 was demonstrated in most cases of benign, borderline and malignant mucinous tumors. All types tumors were negative for CA 125. 2) All types of serous tumors including benign, borderline and malignant revealed strong positive reaction for CA 125 and CA 15-3 in contrast to some weak positivity for CA 19-9. Expression of CA 125 was significantly increased in high grade serous adenocarcinomas compared with low of grade. 3) Endometrioid carcinomas revealed strong positive reaction for CA 15-3 in contrast to some positivity for CA 125 and CA 19-9. One case of Brenner tumor expressed CA 19-9 and CA 15-3 without expression of CA 125. 4) Serum CA 125 levels were elevated in 80% and CA 15-3 levels in 100% of ovarian epithelial malignancy. The correlation between serum levels and staining intensities was moderate.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mentoring program to improve the exercise and dietary habits of adolescents. METHODS: A non-equivalent control group, pretest-posttest design was used. The independent variable was a mentoring program for improvement of exercise and dietary habits of adolescents, in which the mentors were nursing students and the mentees were female middle school students. The dependent variables were weekly exercise frequency, weekly exercise time, perception of exercise benefit, frequency of vegetable intake, and dietary habits. The intervention was conducted by various methods such as group education, individual approach through the mentor-mentee relationship, and multimedia approaches. RESULTS: At follow-up, the perception of the exercise benefit was significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group. The weekly exercise frequency and frequency of vegetable intake in the intervention group were significantly greater after the intervention than those before the intervention. CONCLUSION: This mentoring program is potentially of an effective health promotion program for adolescents and will enable nursing students who participate in the program as mentors to gain confidence in their professional capability.

Clinical therapy that combines full-mouth rehabilitation with immediate implantation and orthognathic surgery poses a challenge to prosthodontists. This clinical report describes a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of a patient presenting with skeletal discrepancy and rampant caries. The results thus achieved indicate that full-mouth rehabilitation by fixed immediate and early loading implantation accompanied by orthognathic surgery can be a predictable and effective treatment procedure.

PURPOSE: Although benign episodic mydriasis has been rarely reported worldwide, most of the reports so far have occurred in unilaterally. To report an unusual case of benign episodic bilateral mydriasis. CASE SUMMARY: Nineteen-year-old woman who presented with intermittent dilation of both pupils two months ago. She had difficulty on reading and doing tasks because of her visual blur. This symptom usually lasted for 1–2 hours, occurred once every 2–3 days, most frequently during stressful situations. Headaches and dizziness accompanied the eye symptoms, and her pupils were both 5 mm in a lighted room and both 7 mm in a dark room. All tests, including brain magnetic resonance imaging, showed no abnormal findings. We diagnosed her as benign episodic bilateral mydriasis. The frequency of her symptoms decreased during the university vacation period. CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of ophthalmologic or neurologic abnormalities other than headaches in patients with transient mydriasis, benign episodic mydriasis should be considered as a differential diagnosis. Although benign episodic bilateral mydriasis has a unilateral predominance, for the first time the authors report that benign episodic mydriasis may occur in both eyes during same episode.

The use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be complicated by severe forms of renal dysfunction. These include fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, acute renal insufficiency due to alteration in renal hemodynamics, or interstitial nephritis and proteinuria secondary to glomerular pathology, which has the histologic characteristics of minimal change glomerulopathy (MCG). While NSAID-induced nephrotic syndrome characteristically consists of MCG with interstitial nephritis, which is the most common clinical manifestation, it rarely consists of MCG without interstitial nephritis, which has been reported in a handful of patients who took fenoprofen, ibuprofen, sulindac, diclofenac, or zomepirac. We experienced a 66-year-old female patient who presented with low serum albumin, proteinuria and generalized edema and received Geworin for about 2 year before developing symptoms. She histologically had MCG without interstitial nephritis and achieved a complete remission thirty-fifth days after discontinuing the drug. A cause-and-effect relationship of this disease to Geworin administration is strongly suggested by the resolution of the proteinuria after the drug was stopped and by no evidence of any impairment in renal function after twenty eight months of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Recently obese people have increased in Korea due to change of diet and life style. Obesity itself is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Also, obesity is associated with hyper tension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes as a componet of insulin resistance syndrome. To assess the health implications of obesity, we investigated the prevalence of obesity and the correlation between obesity and dyslipidemia. METHOD: The study was conducted in 1,733 elderly Korean(male 346, female 1,387) who lived in southwest Seoul area. Subjects were checked sex, age, height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Overall obesity was measured by BMI(body mass index) and abdominal obesity was evaluated by WHR(waist-to-hip ratio). Subjects were divided according to their BMI(<25.0, > or = 25.0) and WHR(male< or =0.90, > or =0.90/female< or =0.85, > or =0.85). RESULT: The prevalence of obesity according to BMI was 32.1% in men and 46.4% in women. Systolic and diatolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LCD cholesterol in the obese group revealed significantly higher than those in the nonobese group. In the abdominal obesity male group according to WHRl, the serum tiglyceride level was increased and the serum cholesterol level was decrea- sed but blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were not different compared with the non-obese group. In the abdominal obesity female group, sys- tolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly different in addition to triglyceride and HDL cholesterol compared with the non-obese group. CONCLUSION: Obese Korean elderly population had a characteristics like higher levels of blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and lower level of HDL cholesterol. which were known as cardiovascular risk factors. To evaluate the correla- tion between obesity and cardiovascular risk, prospective study for the difference of incidence of cardiovascular disease between obese and non-obese group will be continued.

Protective ventilation is a prevailing ventilatory strategy these days and is comprised of small tidal volume, limited inspiratory pressure, and application of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). However, several retrospective studies recently suggested that tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, and PEEP are not related to patient outcomes, or only related when they influence the driving pressure. Therefore, this review introduces the concept of driving pressure and looks into the possibility of driving pressure-guided ventilation as a new ventilatory strategy, especially in thoracic surgery where postoperative pulmonary complications are common, and thus, lung protection is of utmost importance.

PURPOSE: To produce the nationwide 5-year survival rates of Korean cancer patients by primary cancer site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study subjects were cancer patients diagnosed in 1995, as documented by the Korea Central Cancer Registry (KCCR) Program. This data was collected in 120 (93%) of 129 nationwide intern- and resident-training hospitals and 75 (94%) of the 80 Korean university hospitals. Follow-up was performed by obtaining information upon vital status (i.e., whether living or dead) from the government administered whole population files. Cumulative observed survival rate (OSR) was calculated by using the life table method and the relative survival rate (RSR) was computed using the life-time table for the years 1995, 1997, and 1999. RESULTS: Of the 55,042 study subjects, the OSR for all Korean cancer patients was 61.4% at 1 year and 38.1% at 5 years. The RSR for all cancers was 62.5% at 1 year and 41.4% at 5 years, and the 5-year RSRs for all cancers in men and women were 32.6% and 53.2%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This is the first nationwide report upon 5-year cancer survival by primary site in Korea. Men showed a lower survival rate than women in most malignancies. Pancreatic and thyroid cancer had the lowest and highest 5-year survival rates, respectively.
