1.Gender Differences in Behavioral Characteristics and Their Awareness of Obese Children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in behavioral characteristics and their awareness of obese school children. The results were as follows : 1. In comparison with eating habits and food preference, the girls had more irregular breakfast and were likely to have vegetables/fruits than the boys. 2. In characteristics related to exercise and activities, boys did more exercise than girls. Particularly, in lunch free time, boys participated in playing various active excercise with friends, but girls participated in more non-active behaviors(such as, chattering, reading, or playing jack-stones). 3. In comparison with their awareness related to obese persons, about a half of boys had positive opinions(e, grong, healthy.), but about only 20% of girls had positive opinions.

2.A Study on Influencing Factors in Health-promoting Lifestyle of Adolescents.

The purpose of this study were to define the degree of performance in health promoting lifestyle and to identify the variable related to performance inn health promoting lifestyle of adolescents. The subjects of this study were 469 adolescents in the 4 high schools. The sample data were collected using a purposive sampling method from July 1 to July 27. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation Coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS PC+ program. The results of this research were as follows. First, The means of performance in the health promoting lifestyle of adolescents revealed total 2.478 ; harmonious relationships 3.045, regular diet 2.236, professional health management 1.322, sanitary life 2.910, self regulation 2.558, emotional support 2.696, healthy diet 2.048, rest and sleep 2.651, exercise and activity 2.491, self actualization 2.466, diet control 2.408. The factor with the highest degree of performance was the harmonious relationships, whereas the one with the lowest degrees was the professional health management. Second, the relationship between the degree of performance in health promoting lifestyle and its related variable were as follows. (1) Performance in the health promoting lifestyle was significantly correlated with self esteem, self efficacy, health conception, perceived health status, mother's health promoting lifestyle, mother's health conception. (2) The most important factor that affects performance in the health promoting lifestyle of adolescents was self esteem. The combination of self esteem, health conception, mother's health promoting lifestyle, self efficacy, perceived health status accounted for 45.2% of the variance in health promoting lifestyle of adolescents.

3.Subpopulation of Rabbit Articular Chondrocytes Separated by Percoll Density Gradient.

Articular chondrocytes have been known to have heterogeneity in articular cartilage. Four layers are generally recognized from the articular surface to the subchondral bone. We have used Percoll density gradients to separate chondrocytes from articular cartilage into distinct subpopulations. Non-fibrillated articular cartilage was obtained from rabbit knee. The cells were carefully layered on the top of the preformed gradient and spun. After centrifugation, we obtained four fractions: Fraction A referred boundary between 0% and 10%, fraction B from between 10% and 20%, fraction C from between 20% and 30%, and fraction D from between 40% and 50%. In the A fraction, cells are relatively larger and round in shape, while their nuclei are relatively smaller. In the cytoplasm many lipid droplets were found and rough endoplasmic reticulum were disrupted. In the D fraction, chondrocyte is small, with large nucleus which surrounded by well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. The type II collagen proteins were expressed strongly and more proteoglycans synthesized in fractions A and B. And chondrocytes from the fraction D divided more slowly than those from the fractions A, B, and C. We have succeeded in separating chondrocytes from articular cartilage into distinct subpopulations by Percoll density gradients, as well as characterized growth rate, histological appearances and phenotypic expression. This study is the first report about the Percoll density gradients to separate articular chondrocytes.

4.Statistics of hematologic malignancies in Korea: incidence, prevalence and survival rates from 1999 to 2008.

BACKGROUND: The nationwide statistical analysis of hematologic malignancies in Korea has not been reported yet. METHODS: The Korea Central Cancer Registry and the Korean Society of Hematology jointly investigated domestic incidence rates and prevalence of hematologic malignancies occurred between 1999 and 2008, and analyzed survival rates of patients who were diagnosed between 1993 and 2008. Data of hematologic malignancies from 1993 to 2008 were obtained from the Korean National Cancer Incidence Data base. The crude incidence rates, age-specific incidence rates, age-standardized incidence rates, annual percentage change of incidence, and prevalence from 1999-2008 were calculated. Survival rates for patients diagnosed in 1993-2008 were estimated. RESULTS: In 2008, a total of 8,006 cases of hematologic malignancies were occurred, which comprised 4.5% of all malignancies. In all genders, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma were most frequent diseases. In terms of age, ages between 60 and 69 were most prevalent. From 1999 to 2008, the age-standardized incidence rates increased from 10.2 to 13.7, and the annual percentage change was 3.9%. The 5-year survival rate increased from 38.2% during 1993-1995 to 55.2% during 2004-2008. As of January 2009, number of patients with 10-year prevalence was 33,130, and with 5- to 10-year prevalence was 10,515. CONCLUSION: This is the first nationwide statistical report of hematologic malignancies in Korea. It could be used as the basic information to help investigate epidemiologic characteristics, evaluate progress during the past years, and establish future strategies for hematologic malignancies. Periodic statistical analysis of hematologic malignancies in Korea should be continued.

8.Melanosis coli--histochemical and immunohistochemical comparison of the pigments of melanosis coli and Dubin-Johnson syndrome.

We compared the pigment of melanosis coli with the pigment of Dubin-Johnson syndrome, melanin, and lipofuscin. The pigment of melanosis coli appeared similar to lipofuscin in that it stained positively with periodic acid-Schiff, oil red-0 and Victoria blue stains and revealed negative reactions to the immunohistochemical stains for S-100 protein and neuron specific enolase, but had similarity to melanin as shown by the positive reaction to Fontana-Masson stain and negative autofluorescence. The pigment of Dubin-Johnson syndrome showed the same histochemical and immunohistochemical characteristics as that of melanosis coli. The results indicate that the pigments of melanosis coli and Dubin-Johnson syndrome are identical and are variants of lipofuscin.

9.Effects of Mycophenolic Acid and Rapamycin on Toll-like Receptor Expression in Hypoxic Human Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells.

BACKGROUND: Toll like receptor (TLR), an element of innate immunity, is upregulated by Ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury and may be involved in adaptive immune response. Immunosuppressive agents may increase or attenuate IR injury and TLR expression. To explore the involvement of TLRs in hypoxic tubular injury and modification by mycophenolic acid (MPA) rapamycin (RAP), this study examined TLR expression in hypoxia-induced human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). METHODS: HK-2 cells were cultured in keratinocyte-SFM media supplemented with epidermal growth factor and bovine pituitary extract. The Induction of hypoxia was achieved using GasPak pouch system. TLR 2, 3, and 4 mRNA expression was analyzed by real time RT-PCR using SYBR green and TLR 4 protein expression was evaluated by Western blot analysis. MPA at concentration of 100 nM and 1uM and RAP at concentration of 20, 50, and 100 nM were added to culture medium. RESULTS: TLR4 but noTLR2 or TLR3 mRNA expressions increased in hypoxic HK-2 cells at 24 and 48 hrs. TLR4 protein expression also increased in hypoxic HK-2 cells at 24 and 48 hrs. MPA (100 nM and 1uM) and RAP (20, 50, and 100 nM) decreased hypoxia-induced TLR4 mRNA expression in HK-2 cells compared to normoxia at 24 hrs. However, TLR4 protein expression was decreased only by RAP at 20 and 50 nM. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that RAP may modify hypoxic renal tubular damage by decreasing TLR4-mediated inflammatory and immune reactions.

10.Extensive and Progressive Cerebral Infarction after Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection.

Acute cerebral infarctions are rare in children, however, they can occur as a complication of a Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection due to direct invasion, vasculitis, or a hypercoagulable state. We report on the case of a 5-year-old boy who had an extensive stroke in multiple cerebrovascular territories 10 days after the diagnosis of MP infection. Based on the suspicion that the cerebral infarction was associated with a macrolide-resistant MP infection, the patient was treated with levofloxacin, methyl-prednisolone, intravenous immunoglobulin, and enoxaparin. Despite this medical management, cerebral vascular narrowing progressed and a decompressive craniectomy became necessary for the patient's survival. According to laboratory tests, brain magnetic resonance imaging, and clinical manifestations, the cerebral infarction in this case appeared to be due to the combined effects of hypercoagulability and cytokineinduced vascular inflammation.
