1.Identification of Proteome Molecules by Proteomics Using Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF MS.
Korean Journal of Infectious Diseases 2001;33(6):470-476
Genomic technologies have enabled rapid accumulation of information from complex biological systems over the last two decades. The complete DNA sequence is now known for many organism and the informational database obtained from genome sequencing projects has provide the base for the specification of proteome-the protein complement of genome. Genomic functions can be inferred from the analysis of gene structure and gene expression profiles because proteins are the functional molecules of an organism. Integrated technologies including protein separation, identification, characterization and information manage system are essential to analyze the proteins in complex cellular matrix. This study is focusing on the strategies of proteome analysis using sample preparation, 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis, processing of protein spots and identification of proteins, protein-protein interaction and posttranslational modification using MALDI-TOF-MS. 2-Dimensional gel electrophoresis is currently the most powerful protein separation technique and MALDI-TOF MS is powerful identification technique for protein and peptides as a sensitive, rapid, and high resolution analytical method. The developed integrated proteome technologies are very useful to understand the biological phenomena at molecular level by identifying the new molecules and their modifications in various cellular processes, and can be applied for biotechnology including medical science.

2.Early Developed Candida Endophthalmitis Following Intracapsular Cataract Extraction.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1986;27(6):1097-1100
Candida albicans endophthalmitis following cataract surgery is fortunately rare complication, but once the infection is established, its course is unrelenting and the prognosis for a good visual result is usually very guarded. The authors experienced a case of culture-proved Candida albicans endophthalmitis following intracapsular cataract extraction in a 74-year old man. Endophthalmitis was resolved after treatment with intravitreal injection of amphotericin B, intravenous amphotericin B, oral Ketoconazole and 2% of topical Ketoconazole.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(11):1109-1116
Recently, a hydroxyapatite sphere has been increasingly used as a buried integrated orbital implant for the great improved motility of the prosthesis after enucleation. To allow more rapid ascess of vasculature into the hydroxyapatite implant, Dacron as a new synthetic wrapping material of the implant for anophthalmic sockets had been used and compared histologically with donor sclera in rabbits. At 4 weeks after implantation, fibrovascular ingrowth was found mainly near the scleral windows, where fibrosis extended 2 mm centrally in scleral-wrapped implants. In Contrast, in Dacron-wrapped implants, there was extensive fibrovascular infiltration through Dacron filaments and windows as well, making the hydroxyapatite sphere completely invested with fibrovascular tissue to the center within 4 weeks of implantation. Thus, Dacron as a new wrapping material appears to allow a more rapid vascularization into the hydroxyapatite implant than other collagen material without any serious complications, resulting in early rehabilitation with an artificial eye.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(10):985-992
To evaluate the possibility of Dacron patch for artificial sclera. Dacron(polyethylene terephthalate) which is readily available, biocompatable, safe, and inert synthetic material was implanted in the area of full-thickness scleral defect in rabbits. The histopathologic examinations showed that fibrovascular tissue invested into all interstices of Dacron filaments and fibroconnective tissue encapsulation around Dacron patch had strong connection with collagen fibers of recipient sclera at 4 weeks after graft There were no adverse reactions such as retinal detachment and fibrous proliferation into the vitreous cavity except mild inflammatory response of surrounding tissue at the early postoperative stage. As a result, Dacron graft showed successful firm adhesion to the recipient sclera without serious complications. Thus, We think that Dacron could possibly be used, instead of donor sclera, as artificial scleral graft material for the surgical treatment of perforating scleral diseases.

Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2016;16(3):249-255
The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Korea has enforced the oral health promotion program for elderly in Korea. There are the denture delivery program and the fluoride application-scaling program for elderly. Donggu Public Health Center in Daejeon has delivered the fluoride application- scaling program for elderly since the demonstration project in 2009. The official dental hygienists had a prior consultation with Dong-gu branch of Korean Senior Citizens Association in Daejeon. We expanded the program through government office, welfare centers, and nursing homes. The participants were satisfied with the public relations (95.2%), scaling (99.7%), fluoride application (91.5%), toothbrushing education (98.6%), and denture cleaning education (96.6%). After a medial accident with persistent bleeding, the pre-inspection survey about systemic disease and medication was reinforced. The official dental hygienists have agonized over the low participation of the low-income group and the overlap benefit with health insurance benefit of scaling. We suggested it be needed the assessment of the public oral health program to overlap with health insurance benefit.

7.Radiographic Evaluation of Foot Deformities in Children with Cerebral Palsy.
Journal of the Korean Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine 2004;28(6):549-558
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether 7 radiographic angles make a useful method for analysing foot deformities in children with cerebral palsy, and to assess with changes in angles after 2 years with orthoses or operations. METHOD: The talocalcaneal, talus-first metatarsal, and calcaneus-fifth metatarsal angles on the AP radiographs and the talocalcaneal, tibiotalar, talus-first metatarsal, and talohorizontal angles on the lateral radiographs were measured in 183 cerebral palsied. Seven angles were analyzed according to the clinical types, spasticity, ambulation, and age. One hundred three feet were followed up for 2 years with application of orthoses or operations. RESULTS: The frequencies of higher range in AP talocalcaneal angle were 24.4% in spastic diplegia. The increased frequencies for abnormal range increased as the grade of spasticity. Non-ambulator group had many frequencies of lower range in AP talocalcaneal angle. The age of 8~9 years showed high peak in the frequency of abnormal range. After 2 years, the frequencies of normal range were increased in groups with orthoses or operations. CONCLUSION: The radiographic angles were a useful method for observing feet of the children with cerebral palsy. If the appropriate interventions for feet were applied, the normal frequencies of radiographic angles were increased after 2 years.

8.Effectiveness of a 5-year Community Oral Health Program for the Elderly in Korea.
Eun Joo SONG ; Soo Jeong HWANG
Journal of Dental Hygiene Science 2017;17(3):202-208
Korea has been running the community oral health program for the elderly, including topical fluoride application and scaling. The aim of this study was to compare the subjective and objective oral health status of 345 participants according to the number of participants in the program and of 37 participants before and after the 5-year program. The survey consisted of an interview questionnaire and oral examinations. Analysis of variance was used to compare the variables of the 345 participants according to the numbers of participants. Paired t-test was used to compare the oral health statuses before and after the 5-year program in 37 subjects. There was no difference in subjective oral health status according to the number of participants in the oral health program in the elderly, including subjective health status, subjective oral health status, satisfaction with oral health, concern about oral health, need of dental treatment, oral pain, tooth sensitivity, subjective periodontal health, and subjective symptoms of periodontitis. The community periodontal index (CPI) of the 1 time participants was significantly higher than that of 3 times, 4 times or 5 times participants in the upper center, lower left, lower center, and lower right areas. There was a significant improvement in CPI from 2.59±1.14 to 1.41±1.54 (p<0.001) and positive oral behavioral change (daily tooth brushing frequency from 2.27±0.73 to 2.54±0.90) before and 5 years after the program. However, the program did not prevent tooth loss as the numbers of the remaining teeth significantly reduced from 23.77±1.84 to 21.95±2.03 over 5 years. We showed that running the community oral health program for the elderly for more than three years might have positive effects on the periodontal health of participants.

9.Analysis of court rulings on involuntary manslaughter or at-fault injury due to professional negligence by pediatric nurses: a systematic content analysis study
Child Health Nursing Research 2022;28(2):91-102
Purpose:
This study systematically analyzed cases in South Korea wherein nurses were prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter or injury due to professional negligence in pediatric care.
Methods:
We analyzed the precedents using the methodology of Hall and Wright (2008) and Austin (2010). Of the 618 cases retrieved from the Supreme Court Decisions Retrieval System in South Korea, we selected the 12 cases in which children were the victims and nurses were the defendants, using a case screening methodology.
Results:
The most frequent penalty was a fine, and newborns were the most frequent victims. The distribution of cases according to Austin's violation categories was: improper administration of medications (n=5), failure to monitor for and report deterioration (n=4), ineffective communication (n=4), failure to delegate responsibly (n=4), failure to know and follow facility policies and procedures (n=1), and improper use of equipment (n=1).
Conclusion
To ensure the safety of children, nurses are required to teach and practice a high standard of care. Nursing education programs must improve nurses’ awareness of their legal obligations. Nursing organizations and leaders should also work towards enacting effective nursing laws and ensuring that nurses are aware of their legal rights and responsibilities.

Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing 2013;19(4):306-317
PURPOSE: This study was done to evaluate quality of reports of non-randomized controlled quasi-experimental study articles published in the Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing (KJWHN). METHODS: A search was done for experimental studies assessing intervention effects among all articles published in the KJWHNfrom 2008 to 2013. Original articles were reviewed and analyzed according to the 22 checklist items of the guidelines for Transparent Reporting for Evaluations with Non-randomized Designs (TREND). RESULTS: Thirty-five articles on experimental studies were identified. The evaluation of the quality of reporting in these experimental studies found that there was a wide variety in the level of satisfying the TREND checklist. In particular, according to TREND topics, low levels of reporting quality were found for "title & abstract (only for information on how units were allocated to the intervention)", "outcomes in methods", "assignment in methods", "blinding in methods", "recruitment in results", "baseline data in results", "interpretation in discussion (especially intervention mechanism and success or barriers), "generalizability in discussion". CONCLUSION: Results indicate that adherence to TREND guidelines varied in experimental studies published in the KJWHN suggesting the recommendation that for higher levels of complete reporting, TREND guidelines be used in reports on experimental studies.
