Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health 2020;44(4):199-204
Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of permanent first molar taurodontism and identify the correlation between primary molars and permanent first molar taurodontism.
Methods:
Among the 10,113 children who underwent panoramic radiography at a dental hospital from January 2010 to December 2019, 685 children (404 boys, 281 girls) were included in this study.
Results:
Six children (0.8%) and 98 children (14.1%) showed taurodontism of the primary molars and permanent first molar, respectively. All of the children with taurodontism in the primary molars had at least one taurodontism in the permanent first molars.
Conclusions
Early diagnosis of taurodontism in primary molars might allow dentists to make treatment plans in accordance with tooth development.

Celiac artery aneurysms are rare, their incidence being reported as only 4% of all visceral artery aneurysms. Atherosclerosis and medial degenerative changes are recognized main pathogenesis. They are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally, but the mortality rate of ruptured celiac artery aneurysm is approximately 80%. So one should give an aggressive surgical aid to the patients. We report 2 cases of celiac artery aneurysm which were successfully treated by elective aneurysmorrhaphy and anerysmectomy with aortoceliac bypass graft.

Although the formation of fistula between esophagus and adjacent organ is a known complication of the self- expanding esophageal stent, only a few cases of surgically treated bronchoesophageal fistula have been reported. Increasing application of endoscopic stent for benign esophageal strictures increases the chance for this type of delayed complication. We experienced a case of bronchoesophageal fistula caused by esophageal stent for which we performed fistulectomy and Ivor Lewis operation simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the successful surgical treatment of this complication in Korea.

Less than 2% of patients with primary esophageal cancers have synchronous primary lung cancers and many patients with these synchronous tumors are deemed ineligible for radical resection by surgeons due to the poor prognoses of both the diseases. However, we believe that carefully selected patients could benefit from one stage curative resection for these synchronous tumors. We experienced a case of synchronous double cancer of the lung and esophagus and performed bilobectomy and Ivor Lewis operation simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the good result of one stage curative resection for these synchronous serious tumors in Korea.

The surgical managements for the complicated aortic disease is still one of most challenging fields for the cardiac surgeons. The endovascular stent graft procedure has been tried recently to avoid serious complications caused by traditional graft replacement technique. However, indications for the procedures or management methods for the complications have not been clearly elucidated so far. We report a case of successful management for the newly-onset aneurysmal dilation of the distal aorta after an endovascular stent graft procedure in a patient with acute aortic dissection type IIIB.

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is the most commom ovarian germ cell tumor and almost benign. Malignant transformation occurs in less than 2% of benign mature teratoma. Squamous cell carcinoma derived from ectoderm is the most frequent malignancy. Prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma in ovarian mature teratoma is generally poor but there is no consensus on optimal thrapy. We report one case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from mature cystic teratoma with a brief review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Uric acid is a non-enzymatic antioxidant associated with depression. Despite its known protective role in other brain disorders, little is known about its influence on the structural characteristics of brains of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study explored the association between uric acid and characteristics of white matter (WM) in patients with MDD. METHODS: A total of 32 patients with MDD and 23 healthy controls (HCs) were examined. All participants were scored based on the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory at baseline. All patients were also rated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. We collected blood samples from all participants immediately after their enrollment and before the initiation of antidepressants in case of patients. Tract-based spatial statistics were used for all imaging analyses. RESULTS: Lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and higher radial diffusivity (RD) values were found in the MDD group than in the HC group. Voxelwise correlation analysis revealed that the serum uric acid levels positively correlated with the FA and negatively with the RD in WM regions that previously showed significant group differences in the MDD group. The correlated areas were located in the left anterior corona radiata, left frontal lobe WM, and left anterior cingulate cortex WM. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests a significant association between altered WM connectivity and serum uric acid levels in patients with MDD, possibly through demyelination.

The authors discovered that the p-value for group difference in sex (male/female) in Table 1 was incorrect. And the authors described unclearly whether the p-value for the sex distribution was obtained by chi-square test or Fisher's exact test.
