Objectives: This study aimed to compare the demographic characteristics, responses to negative emotions, and difficulties in emotion regulation between self-harming adolescents and control individuals aged 12–14 years from the community. Methods: Data were collected from adolescents in Chungcheong Province, South Korea, between September 2021 and November 2022.Demographic characteristics and responses to the Depressed Mood Questionnaire and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-16 (DERS-16) were compared between the self-harm and control groups. Results: The self-harm group exhibited a higher prevalence of child abuse (odds ratio [OR]=4.787, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.591– 14.409, p=0.005) and school bullying victimization (OR=4.495, 95% CI=2.353–8.588, p<0.001) than those in the control group. The selfharm group displayed higher levels of rumination (t=7.88, p<0.001) and reduced distraction responses (reverse score t=2.25, p=0.025) than those of the control group. Additionally, the self-harm group scored higher on all subscales and the total DERS-16 score (t=7.61, p<0.001). Conclusion Interventions for self-harming adolescents should address child abuse and bullying victimization. Prevention programs for self-harming adolescents should focus on reducing rumination responses, increasing distractive responses, and addressing difficulties in emotion regulation using dialectical behavior therapy-skill training.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) prevention program for adolescents and confirm its effectiveness in primary prevention by applying dialectical behavior therapy skills training (DBT-ST). Methods: From September to December 2021, 217 first-year students in three middle schools in the Chungcheong Province were tested for changes from before and after the program using the Responses to Depressed Mood Questionnaire and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-16 using paired t-tests. McNemar’s test was conducted to confirm the changes in the perception and attitude scale of NSSI for each question. Results: A comparison of the changes from before and after the program revealed that the response to depressed mood (t=7.93, p<0.001), ruminant response (t=5.18, p<0.001), and distractive response (t=6.07, p<0.001) which are subfactors of the response to depressive moods, were significantly affected. There was a significant decrease in the difficulty in performing goaloriented behavior (t=3.34, p=0.01) and lack of emotional clarity (t=2.52, p=0.012), which are subfactors of emotional regulation difficulties. Also, in the comparison of the perception and attitude towards NSSI, statistically significant changes were confirmed in 7 out of a total of 9 questions (p<0.001). Conclusion It was confirmed that this program developed by applying DBT-ST was effective in the primary prevention of NSSI for adolescents.

objectives: ：This study aims to compare the mental health of adolescents living in child care institutions (orphanages) and youth shelters, to provide basic data for appropriate psychiatric interventions for each facilities. Methods: ：The sample consisted of 157 adolescents in child care institutions and 31 adolescents in Youth Shelters who completed the Korean version of the Youth Self Report (K-YSR). We compared the K-YSR scores between the two groups and also examined factors related to suicidality. Results: ：Adolescents in youth shelters were older and had higher rates of drinking (p<0.001), smoking (p<0.001), and “abnormal sleep” (p=0.007) than adolescents in child care institutions. They also showed higher ‘suicidality’ (p=0.004) and K-YSR scores. On the other hand, adolescents in child care institutions have lower ‘suicidality’, but they have higher ‘suicidality’ when they have ‘abnormal sleep’ (OR 4.194; p=0.006),abnormal diet’ (OR 2.503; p=0.010), and ‘concerns about weight gain’ (OR 2.503; p=0.010). Additionally, 17.6% of participants in the study showed ‘suicidality’. The ‘suicidality’ group had a higher overall K-YSR score than the non-suicidal group, and had higher ‘abnormal sleep’ (OR 3.766; p=0.014) and ‘concern about weight gain’ (OR 2.864; p=0.032). Conclusions ：Adolescents in youth shelters appear to have more serious clinical difficulties than adolescents in child care institutions, so prompt psychiatric intervention is needed. Additionally, it is necessary to consider mental health assessments including suicidality when adolescents in child care institutions complain of sleep, eating, or weight gain problems.

Objectives: ：The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the degree of Graves’ Disease affecting mental health through the results of multiphasic military personality inventory (MPI) in 19-year-old men. Methods: ：We collected and analyzed the results of the MPI for 592 healthy subjects and 148 Graves’ disease patients among the 19-year-old men who visited the Military Manpower Administration from February 2008 to January 2010. Results: ：Among demographic characteristics, both Graves’ disease and control group are 19-year-old men. Educational level, socioeconomic status, parental relationship, and BMI were not statistically different between the two groups (χ2 =0.089, p=0.766; χ2 =5.090, p=0.278; χ 2 =5.988, p=0.112 ; t=-0.635, p=0.526). In the MPI, among validity scales, the score of the faking-good subscale was significantly lower in the Graves’ group (t=3.507, p<0.001), but in the faking-bad and infrequency subscales scores were not significantly different between two groups (t=-1.700, p=0.090; t=-0.519, p=0.604). Among the neurosis scale, anxiety, depression, somatization, and personality disor-der subscale scores were all significantly higher in Graves’ disease group (t=-3.323, p<0.001; t=-4.210, p<0.001; t=-6.202, p<0.001; t=-2.872, p<0.01). Among the psychopath scale, each score of schizophrenia and paranoia subscales were not statistically different between the two groups (t=-0.158, p=0.874; t=-0.846, p=0.398). Conclusions ：According to MPI result, we can confirm that Graves’ disease patients in 19-year-old-men may appear features such as anxiety, depression, somatization and personality tendency (introversion or impulsivity) than the control group.

Objectives: : The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of office workers' stress level and stress vulnerability on heart rate variability (HRV), confirm the significance of objective stress indicators obtained through subjective stress and heart rate variability devices, and examine their effectiveness as an integrated stress measurement tool in community mental health projects. Methods: : From June to July in 2020, 929 workers participated in the stress management and mental health promotion project carried out by K hospital, and their recorded database was used for study analysis with their agreements. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to find out the effects of general stress level, and stress vulnerability on heart rate variability. Results: : All general characteristics were found to have a significant effect on SDNN (ln), RMSSD (ln), LF (ln), and HF (ln), but work experience did not significantly affect RMSSD (ln). Stress level and stress vulnerability did not significantly affect heart rate variability, but stress perception, a sub-factor of stress level, was found to have a significant effect on RMSSD (ln) (β=0.118, p=0.023). Conclusions : In this study, stress perception, a sub-factor of stress level, was found to be a factor affecting RMSSD (ln). This indicates an association with the activity of parasympathetic nerves in stressful situations, and more follow-up studies are needed to use it as a direct indicator of chronic stress and integrated stress in the community mental health field.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the degree of myasthenia gravis (MG) affecting mental health through the results of multiphasic military personality inventory in late adolescence. METHODS: We collected and analyzed the results of the military personality inventory for healthy controls and MG patients among the 19-year-old men who visited the Military Manpower Administration from February 2007 to January 2010. Military personality inventory invented for Korean military test has similar system to Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory. RESULTS: Among validity scales, each score of faking good, faking bad and infrequency subscales showed no difference between healthy control and MG groups, respectively (t=−0.51, p=0.607 ; t=0.11, p=0.913 ; t=1.41, p=0.158). Among neurosis scales, the score of somatization subscale was higher (t=2.29, p=0.023) in MG group. Among psychopath scales, the score of schizophrenia subscale was lower in MG group (t=−2.38, p=0.018). CONCLUSIONS According to MPI results, we can confirm that MG patients in late adolescence may be more concerned with their somatic symptoms than the control group, and that they may be more likely to abide by the regulation and be conventional in their behavior than the control group.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the association between scoliosis and psychopathological effects using the Military Personality Inventory (MPI). METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted of 19-yr-old examinees admitted to the Military Manpower Administration in Korea from February 2007-January 2010. The authors compared the profiles of MPI of 3004 scoliosis cases with the profiles of MPI of 11920 normal controls. The scoliosis cases were classified into two groups according to severity, including mild to moderate, and severe. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the two groups based on the validity scales. The neurosis scales, including anxiety, depression, somatization and personality disorder, were significantly different between the groups. Concerning the anxiety, depression and somatization subscales, the scores of the mild to moderate group and the severe group were higher than those of the control group. Regarding the personality disorder subscale, the mild to moderate group was higher than the control group. For the paranoid subscale, there was a significant difference between the groups and the mild to moderate group had a higher score than the control group. Furthermore, the partial eta square was 0.018, 0.019, and 0.018 for anxiety, depression, and somatization respectively, which suggests that scoliosis was significantly associated with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and somatization. CONCLUSION: Young men with scoliosis tended to have higher scores concerning the MPI than young men without scoliosis. In particular, the scores were higher for anxiety, depression, and somatization symptoms. This result shows that scoliosis may have psychopathological effects on young men.
