Growth stimulatory/inhibitory factors and their receptors are the important mediators of control of epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation. The aim of this study was to observe the distribution of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and transforming growth factor-beta1 type II receptor (TbetaRII) during carcinogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue from 25 oral leukoplakias (OL) and 15 OSCC was immunostained by avidin-biotin complex method. In OSCC, the carcinomatous area and the adjacent dysplastic/ hyperplastic area were examined. In OL, the hyperplasia and the epithelial dysplasia were examined. Monoclonal anti-EGFR Ab and polyclonal anti-TbetaRII Ab were applied. EGFR was mainly expressed in the basal layer and was increased with epithelial dysplasia in OL. TbetaRII was not detected in the basal cell layer and dysplastic area in OL. In contrast, the dysplastic area adjacent to OSCC showed positivity in the entire layer including the dysplastic area. In all cases of OSCC, both EGFR and TbetaRII showed positive reactions. EGFR was increased with the progression to the malignancy, and the expression pattern of TbetaR II was altered to be positive in the basal cell layer with progression to malignancy. These results suggest that the expression of EGFR appeared to be an early event and TbetaR II may be related to malignant transformation during oral carcinogenesis. The expression pattern of EGFR and TbetaR II may contribute to predict the risk of the development of carcinoma in oral premalignant lesions.

A 56 year-old female presented with dysphagia 8 weeks ago and newly developed dysphonia 2 weeks ago. The radiology study and swallowing difficulty evaluation study revealed the esophagus and the posterior wall of the laryngopharynx to be severely compressed by the mass of the anterior 4th and 5th vertebral body of cervical spine. En bloc excisional biopsy of the bony mass was performed, which completely resolved the clinical symptoms. We report a rare case of osteochondroma occurring at the anterior portion of cervical spine leading to dysphasia and dysphonia with a review of relevant literature.

6.A STUDY ON THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE THREE COMMONLY USED DIE SPACING MATERIALS.
The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 1999;37(5):640-650
As an optimal quality of the restorations, there should be a least amount of seating discrepancy between the casting and abutment teeth. However, high viscosity of the cementing medium and its resulting thickness ay prevent complete seating of the restoration. The use of die spacing material provides adequate internal relief for the cementing medium. The purpose of this study is to compare the thickness of three commonly used die spacing materials. Materials and Methods : Stone plates were fabricated and divided into 12 sections to be painted with die spacers. Tru-Fit, Whip-Mix and Belle de St. Claire die spacer which are commonly used in dental practice were tested in this study. Each die spacers were painted layer by layer according to the manufacturer's recommendation. The average thickness of each die spacers were measured with light microscope(x100) and compared between them. Results and Conclusions: A silver-colored Tru-Fit die spacer has the lowest value of thickness without statistical significance comparing with a gold-colored Tru-Fit die spacer and a gray layer of Whip-Mix die spacer has the highest value of thickness without any statistical significance comparing with Belle de St. Claire die spacer. Three and four layers of Tru-Fit die spacer and two layers of Whip-Mix and Belle de St. Claire die spacers seem to be in the acceptable range of thickness of 25 to 45micrometer for optimal seating of the restorations. The standard experimental design and method should be further evaluated for more consistent and objective results.

7.Congenital Sialoblastoma: A case report and review.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1997;31(11):1227-1232
A congenital salivary gland tumor, sialoblastoma, is extremely rare. A sialoblastoma of the parotid gland, occurring in a 28-week old fetus, is described. The histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of this tumor were studied. The tumor was characterized by solid nests or sheets of tumor cells intermingled with ductal structures lined by a columnar cells. Some of the tumor cells showed squamous differentiation. Immunohistochemically, these epidermoid cells reacted positively with anti-cytokeratin. But anti-S-100, anti- vimentin, anti-smooth muscle actin, anti-GFAP positive cells were not found. The ultrastructure was characterized by primitive epithelial cells. Although various names have been proposed, we favored the term "sialoblastoma". The histogenesis of this tumor is also discussed.

10.Sonourethrography in the Evaluation of Anterior Urethral Strictures.
Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1994;30(4):731-738
PURPOSE: To determine the reliability of sonourethrog raphy (SUG) in the evaluation of male anterior urethral strictures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both SUG with retrograde saline infusion and retrograde urethrography (RUG) were performed in 5 young normal volunteers and 20 patients with symptoms of impaired urine flow. Those findings were compared with urethroscopic and operative findings in all patients. RESULTS: SUG was more accurate in the evaluation of the stricture length and degree than RUG in 7 patients with anterior urethral strictures, when compared with their subsequent open urethroplasty findings. Only SUG could classify the degree of spongiofibrosis surrounding the strictures in 15 patients. So, SUG was diagnostically as efficacious as or, superior to, RUG in all 20 patients. CONCLUSION: SUG can be used as one of complementary and reliable tools for diagnosis, evaluation and follow-up of anterior urethral strictures.
