1.A Case of Glomangiomyoma.

Glomus tumor shows histologically characteristic three components of glomus cells, vascular structures, and spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells. It is classified into solid glomus tumor, glomangioma and glomangiomyoma according to relative proportions of components. Glomangiomyoma, the least frequent type of glomus tumor, has its overall histopathologic pattern identical to common solid glomus tumor or glomangioma. In contrast to the foregoing types, however, it has an important number of spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells, which blend with the glomus cells. A 49-year-old woman presented with 2-year history of painful bluish red nodule beneath nail plate of right 4th finger. We made a diagnosis of glomangiomyoma by virtue of routine histopathologic examinations and immunohistochemical stains such as vimentin, smooth muscle actin and desmin.

3.Effect of Removal of Hindlimb Cast on Glycogen Metabolism of the Skeletal Muscle in Mice

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of releasing of immobilization on glycogen metabolism of hindlimb muscle after 7days use of a hindlimb casting in mice. The experimental group was divided into control group and recovery groups after removal of left hindlimb casting. The recovery groups, were subivided into the 0, 3rd and 5th day after removal of left hindlimb casting. The results were as follows; 1. The degree of atrophy of hindlimb muscles by 7 days immobilization was measured by ratio of muscle to body weight in plantaris and soleus muscles. The muscle to body weight ratios of plantaris and soleus muscles were decreased by 88% and 74%, respectively on the day of cast removal. The ratios of the both muscles were increased to the level of the control values on the 3rd and 5th day removal of casting. 2. A significant reduction of the glycogen concentration in gastrocnemius muscle occurred after 7 days hindlimb immobilization. The glycogen concentration in gastrocnemius muscle was decreased by 63% on the day of cast removal. The glycogen concentration was recovered to the values of the control group on the 3rd and 5th day after removal of hindlimb casting. 3. The level of muscle glycogen concentration of 25% glucose ingested control group was almost twice that of the normal diet control group. The muscle glycogen concentration of glucose ingested group was significantly less by 81% after 7 days of immobilization compared with the respective control gmup. The concentration recovered to the values of control on the 3rd and 5th day after removal of hindlimb casting. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the liver glycogen concentration between the immobilized grop and the cast removed group in which was removed. 4. 4.Effect of Articular Immobilization - Induced Hindlimb Skeletal Muscle Atrophy on Autophosphorylation of Tyrosine Kinase of the Insulin Receptor in Rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of articular immobilization-induced hindlimb skeletal muscle atrophy on the autophosphorylation of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase in rats. Rats were divided control, and knee and ankle joint immobilized groups. The experiments were performed on the 3rd, 7th, and 21st day after the immobilization. immobilization was induced by k-wire fixation in knee and ankle joint. The ratio of soleus muscle weight to body weight was decreased in proportion to the duration of the immobilization. The glycogen content of the soleus muscle was decreased significantly (p<0.01) at the 7th day, but this value was recovered to 65% of control at the 21st day after the immobilization. The insulin bindings at various concentrations of insulin to wheat-germ agglutinin purified insulin receptor from red gastrocnemius muscle at the 7th day after immobilization were not changed compared to control. The autophosphorylation of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase with 10-8 and 10-7 M insulin concentration at the 7th day after immobilization was decreased compared to control. In conclusion, above results showed that insulin resistance of immobilized rat hindlimb skeletal muscle was arised from defect of autophosphorylation of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase in part.

5.Isolation and Characterization of the Salicylic Acid Induced Gene in Rehmannia glutinosa by Differential Display.

Rehmannia glutinosa is a perennial medicinal plant belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae with more than 300 species known in the world, especially in temperate regions. Its roots have been used widely in Korea for medicinal purposes. However, it is commonly infected by various pathogens during storage, causing great damage to the roots, and impedes the intensive farming of the crop. Therefore, an attempt has been made to isolate and screen a resistance gene against the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum using differential display. We treated salicylic acid (SA), and isolated a resistance gene that responds to SA. As a result, we found that SA was involved in plant defense mechanism in pathogenicity tests with SA treated and non-treted plants, and we isolated a partial PR-la gene through differential display polymerase chain reaction (DD-PCR) method.

7.Anatomic Variations on PNS CT.

PURPOSE: To illustrate frequently encountered anatomic variations on PNS computed tomography(CT) and to assess their clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT findings of 1523 patients, who underwent PNS CT with no history of sinus surgery, were reviewed, and prevalence of each anatomic variation and its relationship with mucociliary clearance pathway was evaluated. RESULTS: Two categories of anatomic variations were encountered. The first group included variations of the turbinates, such as concha bullosa(28.6% ), paradoxical middle turbinate(31.5%), of the uncinate process, such as medially bent or folded(36.3%), laterally bent(3.7%) or uncinate bulla(0.5%), of the ethmoidal sinus, such as Haller's ce11(28.2%), large agger nasi ce11(9.6%) or large ethmoidal bulla(23.5%) and nasal septal deviation(24. 1%), which might cause obstruction of mucociliary clearance pathway and thus give rise to secondary obstructive sinusitis. The second group included Onodi ce11(1.4%) and medial depression of the lamina papyracea (3.5%), which were not related with obstructive sinusitis. 87 cases of large agger nasi cell were associated with obstruction of nasofrontal recess. Large ethmoidal bulla(452 cases), Haller's ce11(245 cases) and true concha bullosa (25 cases) contributed to narrowing of the infundibulum. Medially bent uncinate process(220 cases), concha bullosa(157 cases), paradoxical middle turbinate(126 cases) and nasal septal deviation(93 cases) were observed in middle meatal obstruction and supreme concha (3 cases) accompanied sphenoethmoidal recess obstruction. CONCLUSION: Recognition of anatomic variations on PNS CT is important to build a treatment plan in patients with obstructive sinusitis as they may represent causes of the disease, and to avoid critical complications during functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

8.The Effect of Radial Keratotomy (RK) Combined with Double Ruiz Procedure on the Corneal Curvature.

Under the postulation that double Ruiz procedure could increase the effect of radial keratotomy(RK), RK combined with horizontal and vertical Ruiz procedure was performed in three groups of 22 rabbit eyes. In the group A of six eyes, RK with vertical Ruiz procedure was performed, and eight weeks later the horizontal Ruiz procedure was added. In the group B of eight eyes, RK with horizontal Ruiz procedure was performed, and four weeks later the vertical Ruiz procedure was added. In the group C of eight eyes, RK with horizontal and vertical Ruiz procedure were performed simultaneously. As a control, in the group D of eight eyes, RK without Ruiz procedure was performed. Changes in keratometry for four weeks and eight weeks postoperatively were analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. At eight weeks postoperatively, mean changes in keratometry were 6.434D, 3.663D, 4.030D and 1.585D in groups A,B,C and D, respectively. 2. Mean changes in keratometry of groups A,B and C were significantly higher than that of group D. 3. Mean change in keratometry of 6.434D in group A was significantly the highest of the three groups in which the double Ruiz procedure was performed. From the above results, it was concluded that the double Ruiz procedure increased the effect of RK and that the procedure was more effective when secondary Ruiz procedure was added eight weeks later.

10.Threr cases of Hypertensive Encephalopathy in a cute Post-streptococcal Glomerulonephritis: MRI Findings.

Two cases of giant cell tumor of bone diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology are described. Case 1 was a 28-year-old male who had pain sense for one year at the right distal thigh. His radiologic finding revealed a destructive cortical lesion with soft tissue extension at medial side of epiphysis of the distal femur. Case 2 was a 21-year-old female complaining pain at left distal forearm for eight months and showed a well-demarcated expansile osteolytic lesion with multiseptation, and cortical destruction at epiphysis and metaphysis of the left distal radius on the X-ray. Fine needle aspiration of each lesion was performed. The aspirate of the case 1 revealed moderate cellularity, which was composed of scattered giant cells of osteoclastic type and small round to oval monotonous stromal cells in large areas. Giant cells were evenly distributed in single or small groups and had irregular but abundant cytoplasms with 10 to 20 nuclei in the center. The nuclei showed ovoid shape, fine granular chromatin, and a small but conspicuous nucleolus. Stromal cells were dispersed in isolated pattern or sometimes aggregated in clusters and showed the same nuclei as those of giant cells and scanty cytoplasms. Comparing to case 1, case 2 had a more translucent abundant cytoplasm in the giant cells and more spindled stromal cells. All two cases revealed neither nuclear atypism nor increased abnormal mitoses in both giant and stromal cells, suggesting no evidence of malignancy. Thereafter the lesions were treated with excision and curettage, and histologically confirmed as giant cell tumors of the bone.
