We evaluated the effect of nitric oxide on the corneal neovascularization in diabetic rats. The NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry was used to investigate the relationship between the nitric oxide synthase activity and the corneal neovascularzation of disbetic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats of 6 weeks of age were use in this study. Streptozotocin(65mm/kg, Sigma, USA) was injected intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. N-heptanol was applied to the right eyes of the diabetic rats to induce neovascularization and the left eyes were remained uninjured. After four weeks, 5 eyes of the non-diabetic rats, 5 eyes of the diabetic rats, and 5 eyes of the neovascularized diavetic rats were enucleated. The enucleated eyes were stained with NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry method and examined under the light microscope. Neovascularized corneas showed intense expression of NADPH-diaphorase at the whole layer of epithelium, the superficial stroma, and the walls of new vessels. Corneas of the nondiabetic rats and uninjured those of diabetic rats showed only mild expression of NADPH-diaphorase, and there were no significant difference of expression between them. According to these results, we think that the increased expression of nitric oxide synthase or nitric oxide may be related to the corneal neovascularization in diabetic rats.

we analyzed data from 102 patients(152 eyes) who underwent photorefractive keratectomy to investigate the postoperative causes of unsatisfactory unaided visual acuity. A VISX 20/20 exicimer laser(VISX, Inc, Santa Clara, DA USA, version 4. 01) was used in all cases by one surgeon(J.W.H). The patients who showed unsatisfactory unaided vision, less than 20/40 uncorrected visual acuity, with minimal follow-up periods of 6 months were included. A decreased unaided visual acuity was detected in 20 eyes(13%). Range of preoperative myopia was -2.50 to -14.00 diopters. Mean postoperative uncorrected visual acuity(geometric mean)was 0.33+/-0.12 and mean corrected visual acuity was 0.83 +/-0.25. Multiple factors contributed to unsatisfactory unaided vision; myopic regression in 8 eyes, irregular astigmatism in 4 eyes, overcorrection in 1 eye, severe corneal opacity in 1 eyes(2.6%) and the causes were as follows; irregular astigmatism, decentration combined with central island and severe corneal opacity. In conclusion, refractive results after photorefractive keratectomy were reasonably predictable and stable, but some sight threatening complications occured in a minority eyes. Improved techniques such as centering procedures and improved excimer laser program will be essential to prevent unsatisfactory unaided vision.

The authors reivewed retrospectively the medical records and pathologic slides of 18 patients with the orbital lymphoid tumors that had been confirmed pathologically. Pathologic diagnoses were as follows : 14 cases of pseudolymphoma (benign reactive hyperplasia), 2 cases of atypical lymphoid hyperplasia and 2 cases of malignant lymphoma. Of the 18 patients, 7 cases were male and 11 were female. The average age at first visit was 53 years. Palpable or visible mass was the most frequent presenting symptom. There were no significant differences in clinical characterstics and radiologic findings between benign and malignant tumors. Determination of clonality of tumors by immunohistochemical study was useful method to differentate pseudolymphoma and atypical lymphoid hyperplasia from malignant lymphoma. An accompanying systemic disease was not found in all cases. All patients were received local orbital irradiation. Regression or disappearance of masses was noted in all cases. No patient have experienced recurrence or development of systemic disease during the mean follow-up of 30 month.

The records of 56 consecutive patients with bladder tumor were evaluated for correlation of preoperative cytological findings with endoscopic findings, pathological grade and stage from January, 1983 to June, l985 at the department of Urology, Pusan National University Hospital The cyto1ogical results of urine were influenced by pathological grade, stage and shape of the tumor. There was a significant increase in the number of negative urine cytology according to the decrease of grade and stage. We suggest that class I, II, III results of urine cytology with bladder tumor are usually associated with low grade or low stage (superficia1) tumor.

To evaluate the prediction of visual outcome in cataract patients, the authors compared the preoperatively measured vision using hand-held laser interferometry(HEINE LAMBDA 100, GERMANY) and Han's visual acuity chart with the postoperatively corrected vision. Among 40 patients, in the 12 cases with immature cataract and normal macula, the postoperative measured acuity was predicted within two lines in 7 cases(58%), and in the 27 cases with mature cataract including nuclear sclerosis, the disparity under -2 was only 6 cases(21%). In the 6 cases with macular abnormality, one patient showed positive disparity. These results indicate that the prediction of visual outcome for catarct sugery using the hand-held laser interferometer was reliable in immature catarct with normal macula.

Although intraocular involvement in Hodgkin's disease is infrequent, there were reported iridocyclitis, exudative retinal detatchment, retinal hemorrhage, necrotizing retinitis, anterior and posterior uveitis, perivascular chorioretinitis. We report a 61 years old male patient with Hodgkin's disease who developed retinal lesion with decreased visual acuity in his right eye during a period of quiscence in his disease, 10 months since diagnosed. On first ophthalmic examination, best corrected vision of right eye was 0.6 and 1.0 on left eye. Fundus examination of the left eye was normal; however, the right eye revealed cotton wool patches, retinal edema, and intraretinal hemorrhage along the superior temporal venules. Fluorescein angiography showed blockage of choroidal flush in early phase and focal area of hyper fluorescence with perivascular leakage of dye in late phase. The results of TORCH test were negative, and the patient didn't have hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and bleeding tendency. Therefore we this case presumed perivascular retinitis associated with Hodgkin's disease.

To evaluate the predictability of visual outcome in vaculopathy patients after treatment, we compared the difference between the pre-treatment visual acuity measured by hand-held laser interferometer and the posttreatment corrected visual acuity using Han`s visual acuity chart. Disease distribution was as follows; BRVO(18 cases), CRVO(11 cases), CSCR(9 cases), posterior uveitis(4 cases). The mean up period was 3.45 months. Among 42 cases, 28 eyes showed positive disparity and 13 eyes showed negative disparity. The range of disparity was from -0.2 to +0.3(mean 0.113). The post-treatment visual acuity was predictable within 2 lines in 38 eyes(90%) We concluded that the hand-held laser interferometer is one of the reliable methods to predict the post-treatment visual acuity in maculopathy patients.
