Santonin-kainic acid complex was evaluated as a chemotherapeutic of the mass treatment of the Ascaris lumbricoides infection in Korea. The results could be summarized as follows: The negative conversion rate was 82.9% in average in 4 treated groups. Some variations of negative conversion rate among the treated groups were noticed. The egg reduciton rate was 97.7% in average and the results were rather uniform among the three evaluated groups. By the analysis of egg reduction, it seems that the lightly infected cases whose E.P.G. were under 5,000 were resistant to treatment with the less reduced egg output. After the treatment with this complex, the number of egg discharged cases were reduced to 1.84% and the average number of discharge eggs per incompletely treated or untreated cases were reduced to 12.5% compared with the level of before-treatment egg output. The successive observations of the pattern of worm expulsion after drug intake was made. The worms were mostly expelled in the stool within 3 days, and 58.9% of total expelled worms were collected within 24-hour stool. The minimum length of the immature worms expelled was 7.6cm. Among the 659 Ascaris collected in the first-day stool from 91 rural people, 8.5% were in the range of 7.6-12.2 cm-long, immature worms. The sex ratio, male: female= 0.69: 1.

This clinical report is a review of the medical records of the 161 cases of postoperative adhesive intestinal obstruction treated at the Department of Surgery, Chung-Goo Sungsim General Hospital during 5 years from January 1991 to December 1995. The results of the study are as follows; 1) The most frequent age group was the 4th decade and the most prevalent age groups in the strangulated intestinal obstruction were below 10 years and above 60 years. 2) There was no difference among the types of previous abdominal operations in terms of the possibility of the strangulation. 3) The incidence of postoperative complication in the strangulated intestinal obstruction(58.3%) was higher than that in the non-strangulated intestinal obstruction(7.7%). 4) The overall mortality rate was 2.5%. The mortality rate in the strangulated intestinal obstruction was 8.3%, and was higher than that in the non-strangulated intestinal obstruction. 5) It is ideal to operate just before progression to strangulation, but it is not easy to decide when it happens. An operation should be considered in the following cases. (1) The presence of two or more symptoms; abdominal pain, obstipation, vomiting and abdominal distension. (2) The presence of two or more signs; leukocytosis, fever, tachycardia, localized abdominal tenderness, rebound tenderness and continuous abdominal pain. (3) Clinical signs of deterioration after 72 hours of conservative treatment.

One hundred seven isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from bovine mastitis were investigated for colony morphology in serum-soft agar (SSA), autoagglutination in salt, and capsular serotype. Capsular polysaccharide (CP) was purified and quantified from the extracts of clinical isolates. Overall, 89 isolates (83.2%) were diffuse in the SSA, without any difference in the proportion of diffuse colony between type 5 and type 8 strains. Some strains exhibited compact colonies in the SSA and expressed CP as determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indicating that compact morphology does not exclude encapsulation. The majority of the strains (11/12) showed autoagglutination in the salt aggregation test. The serotype 336 accounted for 46.7% of the isolates followed by serotype 5 (12.1%) and serotype 8 (12.1%). Particularly, twenty-six (24.3%) isolates reacted with two serotypes; 7 for type 8/336 and 19 for type 5/336. Five isolates (4.7%) were nontypeable with monoclonal antibodies specific for CP serotype 5, 8, or 336. The CP concentration in culture supernatants varied with the serotypes, and the total amount of CP produced by cells grown in a liquid medium was much less than that produced by cells grown on a solid medium. Dyskeratosis Congenita*

Deposition of monosodium urate crystal in joints and periarticular soft tissue is regarded as one of the characteristics of chronic gouty arthritis. In spine, however, only nineteen cases of tophaceous deposits have been reported to date suggesting the rarity of clinical symptoms secondary to involvement of spine. Authors report a case of spinal stenosis due to hypertrophy of ligament flavum with monosodium urate deposits. The patient was 65 years of age with chronic gouty arthritis who underwent a decompressive laminectomy at L4-5. At surgery, hypertrophied ligament flavum that was covered with chalky amorphous materials was noted without any evidence of radiologic features. Microscopically, a portion of ligament flavum had been focally destoryed by amorphous material deposits that were surrounded by a thin layer of mononuclear and giant cells along with occasional sprinkling of chronic inflammatory cells and negative birefringence on polarizing microscopy.

Hemangioblastomas are histologically benign tumors, which generally occur at the posteriro fossa and rarely in supratentorial region. The authors analyzed 18 cases of posterior fossa hemangioblastoma which have been operated at the Department of Neurosurgery, Seoul National University Hospital from 1982 to 1989. The clinico-pathological and radiological features were as follows : 1) Among 18 cases, 13 cases were cystic type with or without mural nodule and 5 cases were solid type. 2) 2 cases were compatible with Von Hippel Lidau's complex, one of which was associated with retinal angiomatosis and the other with mulitple cysts in the pancreas and kidney. In 3 cases, hemoglobin level was above 18g/dl, implying polycythemia, but returned to normal level postoperatively. 3) Mural nodules were not visible in the enhanced CT scan in the 2 cases, in one of which mural nodule was visible in the angiography and so, angiography was more helpful than the CT scan in the detection and the localization of the mural nodule. 4) Among 18 cases, 2 cases(11%) recurred at 34 months and 48 months postperatively.
