A case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's Sindrome chiefly affected the anterior uvea has been clinically studied with several references. It was a typical one with hearing disturbances and was complicated with a secondary glaucoma. Following the iridectomy the I.O.P. was back to normal limit and with steroid therapy the inflammatory signs were relieved. After a considerabie period the anterior uveitis recurred. In this case the age of the patient was 10 years older than those Parker presented.

The present study has shown that immunohistochemical staining of the human placentas (5 first trimester and 20 full term placentas) for confirmation of the monocytic linease of its macrophage function. We used two macrophage associated glycoprotein; alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (A1Ac) and lysozyme (LSZ). The results from presence or absence of A1Ac & LSZ by immunohistochemical methods can be helpful to deceide the degree of differentiation of macrophage. In al the placentas examined a strong cytoplasmic reaction for A1Ac was seen in the Hofbauer cells, and the same cells of serial sections didn't stain for LSZ. The strong cytoplasmic reaction for A1Ac supports that Hofbauer cells are macrophage, but they didn't stain for LSZ, a bactericidal enzyme, we propose that these cells are not fully differentiated macrophage. The lack of LSZ may have some relevance to the pathogenesis of certain placental infections.

One hundred seven isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from bovine mastitis were investigated for colony morphology in serum-soft agar (SSA), autoagglutination in salt, and capsular serotype. Capsular polysaccharide (CP) was purified and quantified from the extracts of clinical isolates. Overall, 89 isolates (83.2%) were diffuse in the SSA, without any difference in the proportion of diffuse colony between type 5 and type 8 strains. Some strains exhibited compact colonies in the SSA and expressed CP as determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indicating that compact morphology does not exclude encapsulation. The majority of the strains (11/12) showed autoagglutination in the salt aggregation test. The serotype 336 accounted for 46.7% of the isolates followed by serotype 5 (12.1%) and serotype 8 (12.1%). Particularly, twenty-six (24.3%) isolates reacted with two serotypes; 7 for type 8/336 and 19 for type 5/336. Five isolates (4.7%) were nontypeable with monoclonal antibodies specific for CP serotype 5, 8, or 336. The CP concentration in culture supernatants varied with the serotypes, and the total amount of CP produced by cells grown in a liquid medium was much less than that produced by cells grown on a solid medium. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies in patients with mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVPS) have shown the coexistence of various forms of autonomic dysfunction, and so this is an area that requires further investigation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study group consisted of 65 patients (36 men and 29 women), aged 16 to 43 years (mean+/-SD, 28+/-8) with symptomatic, echocardiographically proven mitral valve prolapse (MVPS) who were free of other organic heart diseases and arrhythmias. In a prospective study, heart rate variability (HRV) indexes were calculated from 24-hour Holter recordings obtained during normal daily activity and plasma norepinephine was measured, and then these data were compared among the study group according to clinic heart rate (HR). RESULTS: The study group was divided into below 60 bpm (group 1: n=13), 60 - 80 bpm (group 2: n=36) and over 80 bpm (group 3: n=16) on the basis of clinic HR. These patient groups were matched with respect to age and gender. There were significant difference in SDNNIDX, rMSSD and pNN50 between these groups (p=0.005, 0.009 and 0.002 respectively), and these HRV measures correlated inversely with clinic HR (p<0.01). As clinic HR increased, there was a tendency for plasma norepinephrine concentration to also rise (p<0.05), but there was no statistical significant difference between these groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggests that MVPS may have subgroups of HRV, reflecting cardiac autonomic modulation, according to clinic HR.

Although our present knowledge of the etiology of peptic ulcer is incomplete, the presence or absence of peptic ulcer is determined by the delicate interplay between aggressive factors (secreted gastric acid and pepsin) and defensive factors (mucosal resistance). Peptic ulcer is produced when the aggressive effects of acid-pepsin dominate the protective effects of gastric or duodenal mucosal resistance by predominance of aggressive factors or interruption of defensive factors. KU-54 enhances mucosal resistance to tissue injury by the increase of gastric mucosal blood flow, the stimulation of gastric mucosal metabolism, the increase of glycoprotein of gastric mucus, and the increase of ATP of gastric mucosa. We have treated 38 cases of gastric ulcers with KU-54 300 mg daily for 4-12 weeks for the evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy. Endoscopic, clinical, and laboratory assessments were undergone before and after 4 ~ 12 weeks of the treatment. Major symptoms of gastric ulcer have been improved in 83.3% after the medication with KU-54. The healing rate of gastric ulcer evaluated by endoscopy was observed in 33.3% after 4 weeks, 73.3% after 8 weeks, 76.6% after 12 weeks of the medication with KU-54. The utility rate of KU-54 was 86.7%. We could conclude that KU-54 is the utilizable drug for gastric ulcer.
